Biography
Naiad/gatekeeper the gift Freshwater nymph from Greek myths |
If you try to find a lair in a certain wild patch of the Plateaus you will find yourself turned around, or having passed through with only vague memories of what you flew over. If you try to track a group of dragons through it you will lose them. If just so happen to wander by you will have a fuzzy premonition that its better to turn, to walk around instead of continuing forward. If perhaps, you somehow notice this oddity and trace it to magic, maybe try to break the spell with magic of your own, you will find that the more magic you use the more it resists, until your head is murky and its difficult to remember what you were trying to do.
Countless dragons have passed through the Grotto's territory since its founding, but only the extremely lost and very desperate have ever stumbled on the dragons dwelling there.
Why?
Because of this dragon.
Present day Apprearance- wip Familiar- none, cares for many aquatic creatures in the area but never has shown interest in claiming one Magic- Immense and yet vey limited; it would seem that the majority of the gaurdian's breath is siphoned off to mantain the enchantment she keeps over the Grotto. With time and experience she has gained more conscious control over it, able to choose which dragons she releases from it and actively bewilder the occasional strong-willed mage that tries to break it. Of course, some of said strong willed mages later joined the clan, but its with the greatest smugness that she releases them, knowing that she had bested every last one of them. - Believed to be a gift of some sort from the Tidelord or minor water spirit, (especially given her colors), hence the name - Not a technical consun, but respected and included in larger meeting among them, given that her charge is connected to their protection - feels notably stronger when she surrounds herself with water - Frequently flies out to the ocean to swim, but can't stand leaving clan territory for long stretches - Raised by largey Hipp, and seems to understand the eccentric seer better than most |
The clan was still in its infancy when she was found, little more than a dozen wanderers that had taken residency in a half-hidden ravine somewhere in the remote corners of the Plateaus. They were vulnerable, with most of their members very young, several outlaws, and few of them capable fighters.
The water egg was discovered just sitting in the stream that was their water source. There was no sign of any creature having left it there or dragon-scent to identify the parents. It didn't even smell like seawater- only the sharp, clean scent the the stream running through it. The egg wasn't there the day before, and was far too large to be easily missed, yet everything around it suggested that it had been waiting there for ages. Without any means to solve the mystery the first members could find no solution but the carry it back to their lair- little more than a campsite then- and resettle it in a part of the stream they could watch over it from.
The egg was quickly adopted by Hippocampus, a strange spiral with a tendency to lapse into speech no one could understand. They knew little about her other than a desire to lay low for awhile, but it wasn't the founder's nature to pry, and the spiral provided enough for the small clan that her help was most welcome. Hipp's whisperings took on a new fervor, and the amount of food she brought back greatly increased so that the clan could only assume she was preparing for a large new hatchling.
A week passed, and the egg's cracks began to broaden. By evening an infant gaurdian had emerged, with scales the color of a deep river and wings like the fins of some exotic fish. Indeed, were those actual fins gracing her head and feet?
"Naiad." Hipp said simply, nodding like this was what she had expected all along. The clan threw a myriad of questions at the the spiral- but all they could get out of her was that this this new dragon was for them. "The Grotto must be protected."
Time passed. The lair grew, the clan grew, and so did Naiad. The guardian aged to adulthood in a normal manner- a childhood of mischief and questions, an adolescence in apprenticeship to various crafts, staking out a dwelling of her own along the stream once she was on the cusp of adulthood... It would have been normal except for one hitch: she never showed any interest in leaving to search for her charge.
In time the clan figured out that Hippocampus had been right- Naiad never left because she already had a charge. Ever since Naiad's birth neither dragon nor beastfolk had barged in on the small clan, neither by intention nor by accident. Travelers came and went but when approached professed no knowledge of anyone living in the area. when the Grotto harbored criminals in their borders, authorities searched but never passed them by. Newcomers got hopelessly lost trying to return to the lair without aid, only for it to suddenly be easy for them after they were formerly introduced to Naiad. They had become effectively invisible to the outside world, and the phenomenon was all because of their resident guardian.
