Biography
Hippocampus/risun the seer given name of a region of the brain responsible for memory; the genus of seahorses; and the name of a mythical creature with the upper body of a horse and tail of a fish |
(The depin is not her permanent familiar)
The entrance to a cave yawns before you with a dark, richly dyed fabric billowing over it. It’s large enough for a guardian to squeeze through, but you can see it shrink to a much smaller space inside, where a network of shelves and tunnels line the walls. The smell of freshwater greets you when you step forward, alongside an alluring aroma you can’t quite identify…
“Well, Well, Well, I seem to have a visitor, “purrs a thickly accented voice, and you turn to see a blue-eyed spiral dip her head out of one of the cracks lining the walls, her scales as white as bones. She slithers slowly outward, eyeing you all the while.
“A client, perhaps? A hirlyng, a vagabound or someone looking for their lost ladylove? Or perhaps you stumbled in by chance? Always my favorite sort of dragon, a curious one. My name is Hippocampus, a seer from the Spiral Keep. A reverse soothsayer, if you will.”
Hipp resisted her birth family ever since she found out as a hatchling that they intended to exalt her to the Tidelord when she came of age. She never grew close to them as a result, and only stayed because she valued the skills her clan taught her in preparation for serving her deity. She respected the honor, of course, but resented that dragons of ordinary flesh and blood had tried to chose her fate.
The Tidelord surely had countless seers in his service already, all of the finest precognitive abilities. Hippocampus, however, was retrocognitive alone, an ability that would be useless in his halls. So why should she attend to her divine father in a place where her magic would be for naught, when she could be of use to the dragons in the here and now? So when it was time for her to be sent to the Tidelord, she felt little guilt in leaving and taking her own path. She would serve faithfully in her old age, but wanted a life of her own first. Her destiny was calling her another direction; Tidefather would understand.
So she wandered, and found in the Plateaus a budding clan with a few most unusual individuals. More importantly, they were in need of another at least somewhat responsible adult. She would be useful here. If her new clan found her unusual, then Hipp more than made up for it by providing for them, occasionally performing tasks before they even realized they needed it done.
