The ocean is a lawless place. Far from shore, it rages and roils, tossing its waves to the sky and dragging the surface to the depths time and again. There is no control to be had on the ocean unless one is a god, but even gods fear the sea.
Nevertheless, Pontus spent most of his early life on the water, learning to bear its moods with as much grace as one can with salty spray filling one's lungs. His parents raised him to keep his balance with the shifting deck, to know when to let the sails out and when to reel them back in, to keep the helm steady to the stars. Most importantly, they taught him how to keep the deep at bay.
When the ocean is in one of its better moods, there is little to fear, but when it begins to howl and churn, there are things that wake, things deep in the dark that rarely see the surface in their ancient lives. These are the things that Pontus learned to hold at bay by any means necessary. Their deaths would mean his life, and and their lives would mean his death.
But no warrior can last forever, and certainly not on the changeable sea. Just as Pontus was developing a solid reputation for battling sea beasts, disaster struck. A merchant ship he was escorting was attacked from below by a Mantarune, and though Pontus fought valiantly, the slippery deck was his undoing. He lost his footing, and plunged into the icy sea, at the mercy of the beasts, already whipped into a frenzy by the storm overhead.
When he came to, his lungs were still filled with seawater, and he was lying limp on a shore did not recognize. For days, he dried in the sun, unseen by anyone who could offer help, and little by little his new magic arose, converting the water that was drowning him into a force that kept his heart pumping feebly. In this state, he was discovered by a small fishing party sent out from Nyx Coven, and they brought him back, intending to nurse him back to health.
It has rent his heart in two to be parted from the ocean, but he recognizes that his brush with death did not end in his favor by chance. The Tidelord looks out for him, and if this is where his god placed him, then this is where he will stay, serving the deity to the utmost.
