foQAuxf.png - Ward from the Clan of the White Tower -
| Intelligent — Impulsive — Driven |
"You wanna know what I think? I think that kid's going to do just fine here."
-Enchant

-
Kefnet is one of the children of the Clan of the White Tower's Matriarch, and as such, she is expected to hold to a certain standard of ferocity and fair leadership. The Matriarch sends her children to other clans in exchange for wards of similar status in order to secure alliances in the growing fight against the Beastclans and the ever-looming Shade. How she grows and develops and the dragon she becomes--that is largely up to her care and training with her new clan.

-

"Mother, what kind of clan will I be serving?"

"A Lightning clan. They specifically requested a smart, driven ward. You are both."

"How will I know if I measure up?"

"They're Lightning. They'll tell you."

Kefnet came to Clan AXQU in the dead of night, accompanied by several guards. When they left her, the young golden-eyed wildclaw stood proudly, staring down at a mirror who wore no trappings of rank of any kind. Kefnet was barely more than an adolescent, just barely of breeding age, still with the slightly knobby knees of all those who are still growing. Kefnet thought the mirror ugly.

The young wildclaw drew herself up to her full height, attempting to stare down this new potential foe with a confidence she did not feel in the slightest. She was here as a representative of the Clan of the White Tower, and she was to be a shining example of the alliance between the two clans. This place was so different, with its strange technology and its underground bunker of a living space. The White Tower had a military bearing, but this place... this place was something else. It made Kefnet nervous. There were certainly rough-cut dragons back home, but this place... it was both more and less formal at the same time, in different ways. Fish out of water didn't even begin to cover it.

"What's your name, kiddo?" the mirror asked, an amused grin on her face.

Kefnet frowned, annoyed at the informality and annoyed at being called a child. "I am Kefnet, Ward of the Clan of the White Tower. I am to meet with Clan-Leader Columbine, that I might be shown around the lair." Involuntarily, she fidgeted with the pendant her mother had given her.

"Hey. Easy." It was a simple, gentle correction, but it was delivered with such sheer confidence and authority that Kefnet found herself relaxing almost involuntarily. "I'm Clan-Leader Columbine of Clan AXQU. One of my kids is on your way to your birth clan as we speak, and I am willing to bet they're just as terrified as you are right now. Maybe more. They're going to do well, because I and my mate and all my advisors taught them well. I know your mother. She would not have sent you to me if you weren't ready. Trust her." Kefnet's lip started to wobble, and Columbine reached up to wrap a wing around her. "Relax. We're gonna let you grow up a little before we start putting a bunch of expectations on you."

Kefnet swallowed and found herself leaning into the clan-head's embrace. Something about her frank, hard edged, matter of fact demeanor and the way she showed affection spoke to Kefnet. Columbine reminded her of her mother, somehow.

The mirror let Kefnet go and grinned, tossing her head and beckoning the young wildclaw to follow. "C'mon. Let me show you around. I'm pretty proud of what we've built here."

-

In the coming weeks, Kefnet learned all about the inner workings of Clan AXQU. She learned about everything from the electrical systems and the twin Arcane reactors, to their vast indoor garden, to the large number of rules and regulations designed to keep everyone safe. She shadowed lots of different clanmates, from the Chief Engineer to the chef and bartender, all in an effort to integrate as fast as she could. Everyone seemed to know she was important, but they weren't sure why-- the young Wildclaw had Columbine's favor and that of her son and his mate.

She had a head for most of the things she was taught, although she wasn't allowed to do more than spar until her bones developed fully. Something something safety, but it was frustrating, especially when she saw so many others younger than she was who were allowed to fight. Kefnet could feel the drive toward combat rising within her, as most young wildclaws did. But the warriors were under strict orders not to allow her to fight.

Then, Millie, the clan's medic, pulled Kefnet aside. "Watch. Do as I do," she said, closing her eyes. Kefnet could feel a stirring in the air as Millie drew magical energy into herself.

It took a few tries, and Kefnet had to adjust for the fact that she was drawing Light energy rather than Millie's Earth energy, but eventually she managed it. Millie walked her through the first simple spell, and her first uses of elemental energy. Her first real fight against a monster. Her first hunt. Her first kill. By the time Kefnet was officially allowed to engage in combat, she already had a firm grounding in magecraft. She toned her body and kept fit, but her mind was and always had been her primary weapon. Moscato, as a warrior, valued control. Kefnet valued sheer magical force. She had a wild, aggressive streak in battle that only ended when all her foes were broken before her.

"We're going to have to keep her on a team, if we keep letting her fight," Fiver remarked. "She doesn't have the self discipline to do it alone."

-

She was digging through he old library one day in search of some sort of spell to turn her mage lights a slightly different shade of yellow, when she stumbled upon an ancient book in a dead language she couldn't read. And another. And another. She'd seen some of the symbols used in some of Gemini and Xanthus' works, though Gemini's letters looked more... hateful, somehow. Kefnet took a couple of the books to Xanthus, and hopped into the elevator to begin the hellaciously long journey up to where the little fae lived in his observatory.

"Oh, that! That's Runic. Legends say it was the language of the Gods, but in practical terms, it is the language of magic. Very difficult to learn, very dangerous if done improperly. I can teach you the basics, if you would like."

So began Kefnet's studies into runic magic, and so began her eventual career. Kefnet learned what materials were best for writing runes, what runes were tuned to which elements, and the dark power behind runes applied to bone and in blood. It didn't take long for Kefnet to become proficient at runecraft. Soon, her contributions to the lair far outweighed the cost of having her-- enchanted weapons, books that read aloud, pendants that compelled the wearer to tell the truth.

It was that last that drew Censeo to her. Kefnet was the only one able to rein in Censeo's ego, and the pearlcatcher both loved and hated her for it. Theirs is a tumultuous and dramatic relationship, with Kefnet's temper and Censeo's arrogance, but they manage to make it work.

Kefnet has managed to forge close relationships with many friends and mentors around the lair. She enchants items as needed, and often as commissioned. Clan AXQU is her home now, and when the great battles against the Beastclans and the Shade come, she and her clanmates will be ready. And they will support and be supported by the Clan of the White Tower.

Relationships:

Moscato: Kefnet's mother. Kefnet has always admired her strength and leadership skills, and had more than a fair bit of hero worship for her in her youth. Now, Kefnet has a lot of respect for her mother, but recognizes that she's a dragon like the rest of Sornieth. Kefnet still sends her frequent letters.

Columbine: Clan AXQU's leader. Surrogate mom to Kefnet and one of her favorite dragons.

Xanthus: The lair's Arcane representative, astronomer, and astrologer. He is the one who taught her enough basic runic so she could continue her studies, and she will always be grateful to him for it.

Censeo: The lair's Light rep and Kefnet's mate. Their relationship is tumultuous and not at all stable, and they are often seen screeching at each other. It is, however, passionate and exciting, which both dragons love. They don't love each other, nor do they particularly even like each other, but they very much like each other in the nest.

Fiver: Clan AXQU's head warrior and general. Kefnet idolizes his fighting skill a bit, as most wildclaws are wont to do, but she can't figure him out. Fiver seems happy to keep it that way.

Millie: Clan AXQU's medic and most dominant wildclaw. Showed Kefnet the basics of how to use magic. Kefnet has immense respect for the older wildclaw and hopes to learn more magical combat techniques from her.
