- Matriarch of the Clan of the White Tower -
| Discerning — Fierce — Wise |
quote.
-quote origins
-
Moscato Abasi began humbly. She came from a small clan on the coast near the Starfall Isles, and naturally spent her time watching those around her study magic. She never had much of a knack for it, but she did enjoy reading the few tomes she could find on the histories of the deities, the beastclans, and the ages-long wars between all. An elderly fae was pleased by her interest in the Old Sagas, and he took the orphaned Wildclaw into his household. He tried to encourage her to bend herself more towards more eclectic studies, and while she enjoyed watching him busy himself with the latest method of enchanting rings, the concepts just couldn't hold her interest. What did interest her was the aged, but fierce female guardian who had long ago taken the Fae Scholar as her charge. Moscato admired the way the old warrior kept a silent, watchful eye on the eccentric little fae, and her admiration was not missed. The Guardian offered snippets of war stories, until she'd hooked the fledgling into listening to long, skaldic retellings of the battlefields of the Guardian's prime.
-
Moscato ate the stories up. She was delighted when the old Guardian offered to teach her to fight in the interest of protecting those she would come, one day, to love. Moscato failed to see the wisdom in this at the time, but she humored the old veteran for the chance to learn the true forms and art of battle. She spent many years of her young life under the tutelage of the Guardian, and battle was not the only thing she was taught. She accompanied the old pair on travels all over the world, learned that knowing how to fight was not in fact so important as knowing when to fight. The Guardian taught her how to read faces and bodies for intention, and how to carefully control her own cues so as to give off the exact impression she wanted to impart. Intimidation and ferocity and softness all held a part. A Guardian was not simply a bodyguard, but a caretaker, a majordomo, and often the weight that was thrown, silently and subtly, behind the Charge's words. Because it was ultimately the Fae's decision, the Guardian taught Moscato how to make her judgements impartially and objectively, and to bide her time--but to be ready to act the very moment the winds changed.
-
It was during one such traveling venture that Moscato met with what seemed to be a charlatan street magician. The Spiral coaxed the Fae that she had come to think of as a father figure into his yellow-curtained booth on the whisper of a book on a star the Fae had never read. Once within the tent, the Spiral, Saidin, told the Fae of a clan in a far away land, led by a Ridgeback gone mad, and how another was destined to liberate the clan from her volatile claws. The Fae tsked and hmm'd and puttered about that he had no mind for fortunes or readings, and that a book had better show up soon or he'd take his business elsewhere. The aquamarine eyes of the magician brightened and he chuckled.
"I'm afraid, good sir, that the book is not yet written," he said softly, wrapping his claws loosely around his wizard's staff. He pointed the gnarled wood stick through the curtain and towards Moscato. "She is the heroine of this saga, and her work has not even begun."
The Fae glanced at his Guardian, but even she could not read the spiral. Moscato stepped forward, skeptical even as she was curious.
"What proof have you, magician?" She asked, and Saidin chuckled again.
"My Lady," he cooed, following the words with a bow so low that she rather thought his nose would scrape across the floor. He turned his head so that one aqua eye could observe her from beneath the wide brim of his hat. "Are ye not an orphan, born on the coast of the Isles, raised by a Fae and taught the Ways by a Guardian?"
Moscato did not hide her peal of laughter. "Indeed, and as much could easily be seen by my eyes and my companions." She cocked her head, shuffling her wings and observing him. "Do you think me so foolish?"
"Aye, M'Lady, and that is precisely why ye, and ye alone, will be able to rescue my clan and lead them from the darkness. In doing so, your benevolence shall change the fate of not just one clan, but many--perhaps even much of Sorneith."
-
It is not every day, or even every lifetime, that one is offered the chance to forge a destiny or change the fates of hundreds. Her adoptive guardians told her that she was of an age to make her own decisions, and with mouths set in grim lines of disapproval they gave her their blessing on her way. Moscato went with Saidin, the spiral magician, with promises to write to the Fae and the Veteran who had given her so much. Along the way Saidin told her more of the history of his clan, of the progressive ideals of his son and how news of his departure had effected their Matriarch and driven her mad. The image he painted of the Ridgeback was one of depravity and malevolence. Moscato had no idea why none had yet risen to challenge such a monster.
-
Of course, once she met the Matriarch, she saw Thul for exactly what she was. She saw the glimmer of defeat in the old dragoness's eyes when she witnessed Saidin bring forth his young, beautiful champion. Moscato remembered the way Thul went slack near the end of their battle, as though wishing for nothing more than to be sent to the Stormcatcher. It had clicked; this was not madness, but unresolved grief... this was heartbreak. Moscato spared the old mother, and as she took her claim of the clan, she demanded as her first statute that the former Matriarch be treated with all the respect she was never given as leader. She similarly cast Saidin back down into the yellow curtains where he belonged; a rambling magician whom would try to paint such negative aspects on his former lover rang of bitterness and spite, but Moscato understood that he may well be in mourning as well. Their son, Robet, had sounded like a prodigy, with ideals too far ahead of his time. Moscato found it all to be a great pity. She looked over the rag-tag little clan, and she promised that she would see them become successful and strong and sustaining. It would begin with leading them out of the storm and into the sun.

She is the Matriarch of the clan, and she is beloved and respected by all under her rule. She rarely speaks, and when she does it is usually to give commands( 'suggestions' ) or make comments--or to encourage the other ladies of the clan to 'never settle'. She herself takes many lovers--they are called the 'harem' behind her back--and she adores hatchlings. She views most males with humor and generally treats them like pets, whereas she is very harsh and expectant of the females in her clan.
-
During Moscato's long tenure, the clan blossomed. She led them fearlessly for years, and watched her children become strong ambassadors in their adopted home clans. Her children begun having children, and upon seeing the beginnings of what would be the hatchings of many grandchildren, she realized it was time to pass the mantle. She looked to the last of her children, certain that the future lay with those dragons for whom the most of life was still ahead. Her daughter Nehkbet showed the least interest, but Khonsu was willing to do anything to ease his mother's strange change of path. She begun spending more time consulting with the former matriarch Thul, and the two elder dragonesses begun conspiring on how to best see young Khonsu succeed.
