Biography
The man who took the phrase, "I'm so hungry, I could eat a horse!" to another level.
Tarrare was a French showman and soldier that lived in the late 1700s. He is known as perhaps history's biggest glutton, for his uncanny ability to eat massive amounts of food and still be hungry and also was underweight. When he died at 25 or 26, doctors were unable to determine what gave him such a ravenous appetite. He had a wide mouth, enlarged esophagus, stomach, liver, and gallbladder, but other than that, no abnormalities to explain his insatiable appetite were discovered.
As a teen, he ate his own weight in meat, quite literally eating his family out of house and home, so he was kicked out. He stole and begged in a traveling group thieves, before becoming a warmup act for a charlatan. He would eat anything and everything, including corks, stones, live snakes, live rats, garbage, and a whole basket of apples in minutes. He liked snake meat the best.
These performances had no ill effects on his health, other than one time an item became lodged and had to be treated with laxatives.
During the War of the First Coalition, he was drafted into the French army where even four times rations were not close to enough to satisfy him. He would beg for scraps from other soldiers, scavenge rubbish heaps, and even sneak into the apothecary to eat medicinal poultices.
The military thought to use him as a courier, by swallowing boxes containing notes. After a successful demonstration, he was awarded 30 pounds of bull's lungs as a reward. The idea failed, as impersonating a German peasant behind Prussian lines without speaking any German was a dead giveaway. He was captured and almost executed, but was released close to the French lines.
He sought many different treatments for his hunger, but none worked. Any attempt at placing him on a diet would have him stealing offal from butcher's shops, fighting with stray dogs for scraps, or eating carrion out of gutters. He was caught multiple times drinking from patients undergoing bloodletting and trying to eat corpses from the morgue. Though evidence is sketchy, he is suspected of eating a 14-month old child in a hospital attempting to treat him.
He would die of tuberculosis in 1798.
The best ideas of what caused his problems are hyperthyroidism or a damaged amygdala, but it is likely we will never know for sure what made Tarrare such a hungry man.
