Hypnos is loyal to Thanatos and to any other dragons he is close to. This derives from his strong sense of honor. He is honest with those he can trust. He is intelligent and shrewd, and he stops at nothing to get what he wants. He usually doesn't need to resort to violence, instead using his cleverness to hatch plans and preparations to obtain his goals. Unlike his brother, who is suspicious and wary of everyone he comes across, Hypnos is more willing to give out his trust to others. It makes it easier to get close to him. He was the more emotionally sensitive of the two, and still is (even though all the emotions from his previous life and memories are wiped).

Hypnos and his brother Thanatos began their mortal existences as parentless hatchlings. A clan adopted them. The adults seemed to take well to Hypnos, whose presence seemed to soothe them. Those who cuddled with him seemed to have the best, heaviest, and most refreshing sleep, and no one was quite sure why. Even insomniacs were lulled to slumber by him; they considered Hypnos a boon to have around.

For Thanatos, however, they seemed afraid of his deathly aura; it was, to put it mildly, upsetting. Of course, how else were they supposed to know that Thanatos was the God of Death, and Hypnos the God of Sleep? Their avoidance—rather, their fear of Thanatos took a toll on his emotions. While Hypnos grew into a well-loved dragon over the years, Thanatos's heart snapped shut on everyone. It seemed his brother was the only one who would be there for him.

When they had matured, Thanatos decided to leave the clan and begin traveling. He expected Hypnos to come with him, but to his surprise, Hypnos chose to stay behind. The adults liked him. Thanatos stormed away. As time went on, Hypnos's "ability" to put people to sleep began to grow out of hand. Sometimes he would misplace another dragon's belongings while he was borrowing it. When the other dragon lost their temper and yelled at him, Hypnos would duck his head and endure the beating. Then, the other dragon would fall over, dead asleep, for nearly an entire day. Then, if another dragon bullied him, his anger would rob the perpetrator of rest for days, until the other dragon would begin hallucinating their nightmares. Another hoodlum made the mistake of stealing something belonging to Hypnos and lying about it. That dragon fell into a sleep so deep, they didn't awaken for food or drink. As the rest of the clan watched over the sleeping victim, Hypnos absconded.

It didn't take long for Hypnos to find his brother. Thanatos was rather relieved to see him after traveling alone for so many years. Hypnos was a little perturbed at Thanatos's cold, unfeeling demeanor and his mastery of coldfire... but it was what had been since before their births as mortals. The two traveled the world together for about a century. If they came upon a dragon who seemed criminal, or impure of heart, the brothers would work together: Hypnos would put them to sleep, relaxing them, while Thanatos would put them out of their misery.

The other dragon gods noticed their existence among mortals and began to plot against them, like in the days of old. Thanatos and Hypnos were able to evade them, as usual, but after some time, Thanatos insisted that they split up. It was different, traveling with company. And perhaps the others who wanted them dead would think they aren't so close after all if the brothers separated. Hypnos agreed -- Thanatos's displays of sadism whenever they put someone to death were a tad disturbing, anyway.

While he was traveling by himself, another dragon caught his eye. At first, he thought it was Thanatos... but on second glance, she looked female. She was female, sitting under the peaceful moonlight alone. Hypnos sat with her in silence for hours, enjoying the night with her while wondering just who she was. After that night, he began to stalk -- er, follow her around, trying to get some clue to her identity. An odd feeling bubbled up in his heart, something he had never felt before. Was it... affection, for another entity?

Several weeks later, she sought Hypnos out. He revealed his identity and told her he was smitten, even though he didn't know her name. He learned it then and there: Nyx. She was the goddess of darkness and the night, she said. She'd been dreaming about him ever since they had first sat together. At that moment they began courting, and traveling the world together.

Hypnos found Thanatos again, and he introduced her to Nyx. Though he was excited about his love for Nyx, Thanatos denied him. They were gods, responsible for the deaths of hundreds of others; how could Hypnos know what 'love' felt like? Preposterous, he insisted. Hypnos didn't back down. He knew Nyx loved him, too. They traveled together again before separating. Thanatos believed their trick to be working.

Hypnos and Nyx settled down one dawn, many years after they had met. Nyx left to go find breakfast for the two of them while Hypnos rested. She was gone for some time. Feeling a little lonely, Hypnos got up to go find her and join her in her search. He was completely blindsided by an attack from an unknown assailant, a brutal pummeling that left him mortally wounded. All he could see before his vision faded to black was a small flash of gold.

Hypnos died that day.

One year later, his decomposed body became new, and he rose up from his grave at the back of the territory that Thanatos ruled. He took a breath of air, his first in a set of new lungs, and gazed upon the three dragons with glassy red eyes. It took a moment before he recognized two of the figures before him as his brother and the female he had once been so enamored with. Amor... what was that, even?

Sometime later, Thanatos and Nyx quizzed him while the third dragon, Havoc, the necromancer who raised him, watched silently. Yes, Hypnos remembered his own name. Yes, he remembered Thanatos. Of course he remembered Nyx. No, he did not still love her, nor his brother, for that matter; in fact, he wasn't sure what love felt like. (Nyx and Thanatos exchanged a glance at this. Their expressions were ambivalent.) And the most important detail of all: yes, he remembered being attacked.

"Who was it?" they demanded. But Hypnos could only describe the flash of gold, his last memory from the past.

Thanatos believed that the gold flash was Apollo, the sun deity. The gold, and the fact that the incident had occurred at dawn on Hypnos's last day of life had convinced him of that immediately. Apollo had been after Thanatos for years, not that he was sure why. He wouldn't put it past the gold dragon to kill Thanatos emotionally first by going after Hypnos.

Hypnos felt a twinge of something. Emotion... was it anger?

He pledged his loyalty to Thanatos and Nyx, swearing to fight for them on his honor. They had helped him rise from the ashes; it was the least he could do. The two leaders permitted him to make a sleeping nest near their own sleep chambers, and he was going to rebuild his strength with training exercises.

As Hypnos settled into a new routine, he was also getting in touch with being emotional again. No matter how hard he tried, every time he thought about the first time he met Nyx, or the first time he and Thanatos had a disagreement, Hypnos could not remember how he had felt during. However, in his new life, he could feel, and it got easier to identify strong emotions each day.

For example, when he first laid eyes on Kaidala, something tugged at his heart. Something warm, fluttery. He grows a little nervous but also... pleased?

Is this... love? It felt pretty good.

Perhaps Hypnos would pursue it.
