Thanatos is a cold and merciless judge. Almost nothing can move him to laughter, and a very select few can get close to him. Fearless, he is slow to trust others and is especially suspicious of newcomers to the clan. He is highly intelligent and clever. He has a strong sense of duty and will not rest a moment while he is at work around his territory. Thanatos is loyal to those who pledge their loyalty to him and his family; he will go to great lengths to protect his charges. It is disturbing to watch him execute someone—if he deems his victim heinous in heart, the corners of his lips turn up as he watches their spirit burn.

Thanatos's origins remain a mystery. He simply appeared out of the darkness to an unfamiliar clan as a hatchling, his little brother Hypnos at his side. The dragons of this clan took pity on the two lone hatchlings and, realizing the two were unable to tell them where they had come from, adopted the brothers.

Immediately the adults became aware of the aura of death that seemed to surround Thanatos. The dreadful feeling gave them the inkling that Thanatos was not going to survive long with their clan, although he did not outwardly look sickly.

Much to their surprise, he seemed to thrive in their care. However, the adults noticed that he acted quite strangely whenever an elder or someone sick was about to pass away: Thanatos went to the dragon's side until they were gone from the world. Nobody was sure what was happening, but they feared the young Imperial. He gained a poor reputation; the other dragons started to shun him. He struck so much fear into the hearts of the adults that they were terrified to exile him from the clan, lest he turn on them and punish them somehow.

They spoke of his powers in hushed whispers, but their children would overhear. The youngsters would mock Thanatos, daring him to "do something" to them if he didn't like them. The adults, frightened for their children's lives, would take their young ones away from Thanatos and impress in their minds that he was a dragon to be avoided. Thanatos was the living Boogeyman of his adopted clan, and the grown-ups used the hatchlings' fear of him to frighten them into good behavior.

Meanwhile, Thanatos hadn't the faintest idea of why everyone (except his brother Hypnos) seemed to run from his approach. When he had gone to speak to an ailing dragon near death, he had seen all the stares it brought from the other clanmates. He didn't understand why they gawked as he tried to comfort the dying ones in their last moments. Everyone's avoidance of him embittered him. His heart became hard; he opened up to no one but Hypnos, the only dragon he loved, the only one who stayed with him.

After growing a little older, Thanatos discovered his powers for what they were. When he could sense dragons in his adopted clan dying, he was, in a way, cutting their souls' ties with their bodies when he went to comfort them. He realized that this was why the clan was afraid of him. And they would never stop being afraid, would never accept him for who he was. He tried to go to the Arcane dragons for advice on how to be rid of his odd powers, but nobody would give him the time of day.

Thanatos gathered up what little belongings he had and decided that he was going to leave. He expected Hypnos to come with him. To his chagrin, Hypnos refused. He wanted to stay with their adopted family, at least for a little longer. The adults liked him, and he saw nothing wrong with them. Thanatos was angry and disappointed, and he left without another word.

Centuries passed before the brothers had any contact with each other. Hypnos had left the clan and run into Thanatos. They traveled together for some time, but Thanatos wasn't used to having a traveling companion. Hypnos was also greatly disturbed at how much he had changed. He was less sensitive to other dragons, colder, on his journey guided by wherever the pull of death took him. Over the years, he had mastered coldfire. If he judges a dragon's soul to be too corrupt, he touches it with coldfire and watches the blue flames consume the dragon's soul until there was no longer any trace of it.

They split up again and stayed apart for many years, crossing paths occasionally, until Thanatos learned that his brother had been murdered. He'd heard the news from Nyx, Hypnos's grieving mate. He vowed to avenge Hypnos's murder and insisted on Nyx joining him in his travels so he could protect her. After an extended courtship, they became mates.

They settled into a family-clan called Nightmares of the Revenant, where he became the judge, jury, and executioner. Thanatos alone decides who is allowed to join the family by judging a dragon's soul. Any dragons who are corrupt or otherwise "unworthy" in his eyes are immediately put down by his coldfire, except in the off-chance that he happens to be in a particularly merciful state of mind.

He also protects the clan from other dragons and deities with supernatural abilities. Only the foolish would dare to cross Thanatos—they are quickly disposed of. As an example that he does not play games, he has mounted the skull of the dead god Camulus at the entrance to the clan's territory.
