GENE VARIATIONS

This is a fix suggestion that the metallic/alloy/squiggle change had me pondering - the option to pick from 2 (or more) variations of a gene when applying a scroll, if variations are available.

Keeping the change as it is now is affecting players who have already spent their gems and now have a less matchy dragon unexpectedly.
Changing it back to the old art would affect the players that have used these genes post-update, and wouldn't quite address the missing shadow layer.

I suggest that a new type of gene - a variant gene (Could also be called something like mutation, aberration, irregular, bizarre, anomalous gene etc) be added to address this issue, with the shadow layers added in the case of met/alloy, and colour matched to look as much like the genes pre-update as possible. Players who have already applied metallic/alloy/squiggle to their banescales could be given a 1 time offer of being able to change to the variant gene, or leave it as it currently is.
These genes could be applied using the regular gene change scroll, with a toggle to switch between the different versions.

There could also be a low level, high cost craftable item (Scroll of Variance) that could allow you to change the variant of a gene already applied that could work alongside the above method of applying the variant gene. Perhaps a couple of these could be gifted to players by Galore. (Suggested by PersimmonBird and Medenadragon)

A mock up of what the pop-up box could look like (Excuse the poor photoshop font matching) -

yEDjxyv.gif

Not only would this be a solution to both parties affected, but could open up the possibility to have other gene variants in the future

How would this work with breeding and passing on genes?

This is the main discussion point, and all opinions/suggestions will be looked through and added to the first post as points are made. Please feel free to add your opinion. I know I've overlooked some things and the comments are appreciated

Option #1 - Normal breeding rules apply - Dragons with a variant gene have a chance of producing that specific variation along with the opposing gene of the breeding partner in offspring. Dragons cannot produce offspring with a gene variant different to their own (Unless the breeding partner has that gene variant). An item could be available that could 'unlock' all variants of a gene as a possibility when breeding. (Thanks to vihuff for the suggestion) This option has the greatest support

Option #2 - No change to breeding mechanics. The variation applied is cosmetic only and all offspring will retain the same chances of inheriting the classic/original gene as per before the suggestion.

Option #3 - All possible variants of the same gene would become a possibility when breeding by default. An item could be used to 'lock down' a specific variant so only the variant chosen (and the opposing gene of the breeding partner) become possibilities that could occur in offspring. The item used to lock down a variant could be gifted by Galore to help aid breeding projects. More could be purchased for a small treasure fee from the marketplace. (Thanks to Jemadar and PersimmonBird for the suggestions)

How would this affect the marketplace?

Genes in the marketplace would show up in much the same way as they do now - the marketplace wouldn't be overrun with numerous variations of genes, as variations would be applied using the gene scroll it's grouped under, or with an item. Mousing over a gene would bring up the flavour text box that could include any variations that that gene has available

How would this work with AH search parameters and in the Scrying Workshop?

To avoid cluttering up the list of genes to choose from, a separate drop down box could be added to choose a variant from. This could be greyed out by default until a primary/secondary/tertiary gene is selected, at which time the variant drop down box would then fill with available variations for the genes selected. All genes would display as per normal under both modern and ancient genes without the variations showing up (Thanks to neonhorns for the separate drop down suggestion)

How would this work with the daily exalt bonus?

All variations of a gene would be grouped under the classic/original version - so if for example the daily exalt bonus was alloy secondary, the lustre example above would count and receive the bonus

How would this affect gene rarity?

Option #1 - No change to gene rarity, all variants maintain the same rarity as their classic version

Option #2 - Some variants allow for different tiers of rarity - Tier I, II, III (Plentiful, Uncommon and Rare)
These variants would not be applied to a dragon using the regular gene scroll - rather they would require an item (The price of this item would be comparable to other genes of that rarity - for example a rare Tier III would be a gem cost like other rare genes, a Tier I would be a lower cost treasure item)
This would allow you to apply a rare basic gene for example to a dragon that could be bred to a gem gened partner, and have a 50% chance of producing either rare basic or the other gem gene (Tiered rarity suggested by ThistleProse)

Thread update #2 -

GENE VARIANTS

This is a suggestion for a new new type of gene - variants
(They could also be called mutations, abberations, irregular genes etc)

Some genes could have variations available that would change up the gene slightly - adding a slightly different colour in areas, changing the pattern slightly, maybe reducing the gene so it covers less of the dragon etc.

When applying a gene scroll to a dragon there could be an option to pick from any gene variants that are available.
Here's a mock up of what that could look like (excuse the poor font matching)

yEDjxyv.gif

A 'Scroll of Variance' (Or possibly an 'Unstable Scroll'?) could also be available to craft or purchase. Applying this to a dragon would allow you to change it's gene(s) to variant ones. This could work like the Silhouette Scroll, where once applied you can choose from any variants of applied genes whenever you wish with a tickbox/toggle option menu, or instead could be a single use scroll that changes a single gene once upon use. (Thanks to DragonSage, Jemadar and PersimmonBird)

How would variants work with breeding and passing on genes?

Share your thoughts on how breeding should be affected in the comments. A special thanks to Jemadar, PersimmonBird, vihuff and everyone who puts their thoughts and ideas forward

Option #1 - Normal breeding rules - If a dragon has a variant, then it's offspring will inherit that specific gene variant (or the gene of it's other parent)

Option #2 - No change to breeding mechanics - Variations are cosmetic only and cannot occur through breeding.

Option #3 - All variations of a gene are a possibility when breeding. The number of breeding outcomes increases but breeding projects and hatcheries will be affected. An additional item could be available to either 'lock down' or 'open up' genes when breeding

How would searching for certain genes work in the AH and Predict Morphology?

To avoid cluttering up the list of genes to choose from, a separate drop down box could be added to choose a variant from. This could be greyed out by default until a primary/secondary/tertiary gene is selected, at which time the variant drop down box would then fill with available variations for the genes selected. (Thanks to neonhorns)

How would variants work with the daily exalt bonus?

All variations of a gene would be grouped under the classic/original version - for example if the daily exalt bonus was alloy secondary, the lustre example above would count and receive the bonus

Pros and cons

Pros

- Variants offer a solution to players affected by some gene art updates. By making a variant that resembles the old art (without errors, so including the shadow layers, all proper lineart etc) players who have invested gems and treasure into gening their dragons only to have the art change would (eventually) have a variation they could pick post update that wouldn't alter their dragon too much, and everyone else can enjoy the updated art of the original gene (the metallic/alloy change is the thing that prompted me to create this suggestion thread)

- Breathe new life into old genes. I'd love a reason to get excited about cherub or viper

- A lot of new content with very little additional art needed - a lot of variations could be as simple as a new colour change, or deleting parts of the gene such as the side bits of rune tertiary.

- More customization!

Cons

- While it may not be taxing for the art team, this would take a bit to code and implement

- This has potential to disrupt breeding pairs, projects and hatcheries

- Breeding changes and how the new gene type works could be confusing
