Biography
MALEK
|
His first sensation had been pain. Eager eyes had blinked open, hoping to see the expectant, loving faces of his mother and father. Instead he had found nothing but the blinding glare of sunlight on snow. He had expected a family. He remembered his egg nestling next to others, and the gentle purr of his mother's voice as she told them their names, and the secrets they should know. And yet, he had hatched alone, no sign of the parents that had whispered encouraging, wise words to him in the egg. He had hated being alone from the very start. Inquisitive, friendly, and perhaps a bit too curious, he had spent his youth chasing snowfalls and exploring the mountains that seemed to belong to him alone. There had been much to see, and yet it was all so terribly quiet. Determined to never again hear the peal of silence ringing in his ears, he decided he would start his own clan. A gathering of unique individuals from the world over, joining together to share knowledge and companionship. This was his charge, to guard, protect, and nurture the small family that he had found on his own--no matter the stakes against them, no matter the cost. Each was precious, and each would know they were loved. They would know that they were not alone. He had not, however, expected that love would find him as well. His Camille had given him no choice in the matter, breaking through his oblivion and barriers with a singular determination to know and claim the true soul within. She is the sun that does not blind, the light that shines ever gently on him, guiding him when he would otherwise stumble from his path. His one true perfection. And yet, despite this, and the warmth offered to those claimed as family and friend, there is a darkness within the charismatic leader, as if he is perhaps only too perfect, too friendly, too sure of the right words to say. Newcomers are welcomed with smiles and laughter, treated to fresh hunts and provided all they could dare need for their comfort. They might even find the theatrical and energetic Skydancer to be somewhat amusing, lost in thought and study as he often is, chasing some theory or another, lost in tinkering with some enchantment, machine, or musty tome. In this overwhelming hospitality, they may well find themselves wondering if the reputation of the region is undeserved. It would seem that in truth, life even in the Fortress of Ends holds no great danger for a strong clan. The more wary among them, the more observant, may then note the cautious respect held in the stance and gaze of the members of the clan, the way even the powerful and intimidating among them defer to the smaller and seemingly warm-hearted Skydancer that calls himself leader, and the hesitant and quickly-averted glances given in secret to the glittering prisons above. There are few rules for life in the Ever Ice. Few at least that are told, but the foolhardy dragons who have dared cross the thin line have quickly discovered the truth of the caution in the clan's eyes, and learned as quickly its true name: Fear. One: Never lie to the clan leader. No matter the reason for one's coming to this bleak land, no matter what past they flee, they must be wholly honest and forthcoming. Two: Obey the laws set down by the Icewarden, and assist eternally in guarding His domain. Three: Never disobey, never disrespect, and never, ever speak of the clan leader or clan as anything less than perfection. Malek abides no patience for those who fail to meet his standards, and those who would dare cross him are given less time even than that to regret their mistake. For while the smiles and laughter will remain in place as long as the rules are obeyed, the mask of friendliness and of care and love will shatter as quickly as ice in the sun, leaving nothing but a heartless and cold dictator where the warm leader once stood. Few know which is his true face, and those who do dare not tell. He is as loyal and true a friend as any could wish. A leader who can and will put his very life on the line for even the lowest member of his clan at a moment's notice. He is just as well a brutal and heartless narcissist, who will not think twice to tear the throat from any who stand in his way or dare compromise his ideals, be they even his oldest of companions. |
