Biography

A real daredevil who seems to favor the excitement of perilous adventure over life itself. He's had himself outfitted with all sorts of mechanical enhancements and gear (some of Gizmo's best work) to boost his flying ability, allowing him to glide into the eye of a storm with his Storm Seeker companion. In reality, he struggles to find any worth in his own existence, and risks his safety in all of these crazy stunts because he believes that if he has to go, he may as well give other dragons a good show in the process. Another reason he loves to do his performances is because the loud crackle of thunder and pounding rain drowns out his thoughts, and his least favorite thing is silence. He hates being alone to think and reason: all of his actions are on impulse, and that's just the way he likes it.

Cryptal has tried to get involved in relationships with a few different dragons in the past, but given his tendency to act first and think later, said relationships never last very long. The only dragon who ever seemed to be a good match for him was a world traveller named Orchid, and he had to give her up so she could continue to explore the lands. She was the reason he began to value his life more and tone down the perilous stunts in his act, and even in her absence, Cryptal continues to build on his self-worth. He misses Orchid every day, but he couldn't regret letting her go.

...at least, not until he caught word of her untimely demise. Both Orchid herself and two of their children -- Gypsophila and Ipheion -- had been slain and looted by a clan of rogue Arcane dragons.

And these raiders, in their carelessness, didn't bother to properly dispose of the bodies.

Thanks to this grievous error, the three bodies were quick to form into a minor Emperor in their mass grave, and proceeded to decimate the clan that had so cruelly ended their young lives. The rotting beast was soon struck down in a collective effort from many Arcane clans, thankfully, without interference from any of the deities. But it was still a terrible and frightening situation...

... and Cryptal hasn't been the same ever since he heard the news.

Though it took countless years, Cryptal has finally began to move on from the loss of his old mate. In his grief, his stunts had gone from reckless and bold to nearly suicidal -- but he happened to meet a kind, patient Pearlcatcher who listened to his woes, and helped the Imperial work out of his terrible depression.

In the Sunbeam Ruins, I met a kindred spirit: a storm-loving Imperial named Cryptal. He's a famous performer around these parts, and every time there's a thunderstorm, droves of dragons travel from clans all around this region to watch him perform his stunts! When I heard this news, I immediately sought him out, hoping we could share stories of our experiences and maybe even learn tricks from each other; however, it turns out he found me first when a giant, icy gale rolled in, knocking me clean off my claws! The frigid air (which was strange, given the sunny climate of the Light region) hooked itself under my wings and flipped me into the air, and I was sent sailing, only stopping when I felt claws grasp my leg. Turning to look at who had saved me, I discovered that it was none other than the legendary, iridescent-purple Imperial himself.

Looking back, I'm terribly embarrassed that I didn't realize he was in the middle of his show, because I immediately started bombarding him with questions without even noticing the giant crowd of dragons below us! He was fine with it, though, and he honestly seemed pretty happy to meet another fan. I finally settled down enough to join the crowd and watch his show from a distance, and after he was done and most of the observers had petered out, he approached me and asked me if I wanted to rest with his clan for a while. I had been traveling for a good long time, so deciding it was about time for a rest, I happily agreed.

Cryptal and I spent the next month or so training together. He taught me how to hold my ground in even the most violent weather, how to predict where lightning bolts will strike to avoid injury mid-flight, and even how to sense storms entire days before they roll in! Eventually I had learned everything he had to teach me, and before sending me off once again, Cryptal gifted me a small egg that later hatched into a Storm Seeker crow, like his own familiar.

While I was flying through the sky towards my next destination, I spotted a streak of pink rippling through the clouds just below me. As I flew down to it out of curiosity, I discovered that it was a watermelon-pink Pearlcatcher! I saw her eyes flash with excitement as she noticed me, visible even underneath her tinted goggles, and she asked me in a bold voice, "Hey, wanna race? Just as a warning, I'm pretty fast."

A little competition, eh? Why not? I happily took her up on her challenge and we rocketed further through the sky, tied for pretty much the whole way. I only faltered and fell behind her when the feathers on my wings started to rattle: a surefire sign that my eyes of the storm were detecting something. Sure enough, as I looked ahead, I saw that my new Pearlcatcher friend was headed right into another one of those frigid storms that had led me to Cryptal!

"Look out!" I screamed out to her, but she seemed to be far too distracted by our race to really hear me. I hurtled after her as fast as I could, folding in my wings and arms and craning my neck out to boost my speed, but I was too late: a sizzling bolt of blue energy wormed through the air and crashed into her, illuminating the sky around me with blinding light and practically frying her to a crisp!

I caught her just as her limp body started to fall out of the sky, and despite her great injuries, her chest was still rising and falling with shallow gasps. She was alive... and I was the only dragon who could possibly help her at this point. We were too far away from the Sunbeam Ruins to return to my previous stay at this point, which was infuriating because I knew Cryptal's clan was led by a witch with powerful healing magic; if I tried to make the venture back, though, the injured Pearlcatcher would surely die before we made it there. I guess my only option was to fly down and see if there were any clans directly below us that could assist her. Just as I folded out my wings and started to descend, the dragon in my arms wheezed and gasped;

"Where... where is my pearl...?"

...oh Stormcatcher, she dropped her pearl.
