Lucas was hired by the Wild Oasis clan for his unique skills. It had come to our attention that the main hunting team, Sunburst and Bloodrunner, while very good at their jobs, had been a little TOO good. They would hunt in excess, and whatever the clan didn't need or they couldn't carry home, they would leave to rot. Neither appreciates having a third party member "cramping their style", and the two have successfully evaded most attempts to send a teammate with them. Bloodrunner fades into the shadows as Sunburst's reflective scales dazzle anyone who gets close. A Tundra could follow their scent, and a Skydancer could track their energy, but neither can navigate the dense forest blind.
Lucas' abilities seem at first to be similar to a Skydancer's: he can sense creatures' energy, and sometimes trace a hint of their emotions, but his power extends beyond that. Lucas senses the aura of the world around him, and can manipulate it to his whims. Aura emanates from all things, living or not, allowing Lucas to "see" the world through aura instead of light - leaving him unaffected by the hunters' visual trickery.
He can use aura for other means as well, creating weapons or protection as suits his needs. More than once he has made a shimmering shield around hapless prey animals when he feels the hunters have done enough. Lucas is a constant source of frustration to the hunters, interrupting many an attacking spree, but he knows his job is worthwhile. He has a strong instinct about the nature of justice and balance, and considers it his duty to uphold the balance of nature. So he sticks close to the hunters - unwanted by his teammates, yet unwavering in his commitment.
