Part 1: Equinoce Part 2: Noxium Part 3: Aequus Something was wrong. Noxium glanced up from his coloring book as his mother padded into his room and was acutely aware of the tension in the air. His sister was staring at him with wide eyes, her tail gripped in both paws. Slowly he sat up, trying to get Equinoce’s attention as his mother set her down. The smaller didn’t pay him any attention, though, her eyes darting around their shared room. “Your sister was being fussy,” his mother said, offering an apologetic smile, “And, with the meeting going on…” “I’ll take care of her, Mom,” Noxium said, a bright smile fixed on his face. Even though he was the older sibling, he was extremely proud of being the more mature of the two. And now he got to babysit his sister like a real grown up. His mother nuzzled the top of his head. “You’re a lifesaver, sweetheart.” She spared the two a quick glance before she left. Noxium picked up his crayons with a delicate grip and held it out to the smaller dragon. “Wanna color?” Equinoce blinked, head tilted to one side. She opened her mouth, babbling a few nonsense words before her jaw snapped shut with an audible click. Her genuine look of surprise had him giggling. “Don’t be silly,” he said, wiggling the crayon in her face, “Come color.” The she-dragon huffed, grabbing the offered crayon and sinking her claws into a blank sheet of paper. She scrambled ontop his bed, eyes fixing him in a searching glare for a long moment. As he turned back to his picture, she scribbled on her own paper, a delighted purr shaking her from head to tail as she curled in in the soft blue sheets. Noxium hummed, quickly forgetting he wasn’t alone. He’d crudely drawn himself in a triumphant pose, heavy armor a bright blue color. It was the clan’s official color, and it looked surprisingly good in his picture, he thought. The paw that fished around in his crayon bucket made him jump. Bright eyes were inches from his face before Equinoce retreated a few steps, a handful of colors clenched in her claw. He let out a nervous laugh. “What’re you drawing?” She small dragon looked at him for a moment, gently tugging her page off the bed so he could see. It was a scribbled mass of black and purple that seemed to portray nothing. There were small purple circles that were nearly lost among the overwhelming mass of black. “That’s… nice,” he said, trying to remember the fact his sister was just a hatchling and couldn’t be held to the standard of his own drawings. He fixed a smile on his face, “Maybe mom’ll let us put these on the fridge again.” Equinoce purred, expression bright as she inspected her scribbles. Somehow that made a trill of warmth blossom in her chest. “So…” he started, gingerly setting aside his colors, “What’s bugging you this time?” For a moment silence stretched between the two. Then Equinoce shook her head, sidling up to him. She rested heavily against his side, paws fiddling with the end of her tail. A low chirrup escaped her maw, her eyes dulling slightly. He nudged her, a wing draping over her frame. “Hey, don’t worry about it. Whatever it was you got me to look out for ya. Now get back to coloring.” With a mock sternness in his tone, he placed a sheet of paper on the top of her head. The rest of the evening passed without further incident even though Noxium couldn’t help but notice the way she never really turned her back to the dark space under his bed and her eyes flicked between it and the door. He didn’t bother to question it.
I have seen the sun set on a hollow realm,
the flickering flames of hope giving mock birth to a bright, new dawn. Only fools dream of promises and forget the hunger of today, and the gnawing insatiable destitution that makes today destitute |
