Biography
Equinoce The Transcendent
|
Part 1: Equinoce Part 2: Noxium Part 3: Aequus It was cold. As she took her first, shuddering breath, she blinked, the softness of eternal night pressing against her eyes. The broken shell of her egg crumbled as she pushed herself to her feet, tumbling out of her nest. Sand stretched out as far as she could see, tall pillars stretching up into the inky blackness of the sky. Thick, goopy darkness clung to her scales, far darker than the night around her. For a moment she was intrigued, the ink dripping from the broken shards of her egg warm to the touch. Then she realized she wasn’t alone. There were at least a half dozen wispy eggs nearby, their translucent surfaces showing the withered figures within. Though she couldn’t say for sure, she was pretty sure that’s not what eggs were supposed to look like. The bitter cold radiating from them was at such an odds with the warmth clinging to her scales that she scrambled away from them with a small yelp. She tumbled over the edge of her nest and landed with a soft plop into the pale sand below. Instantly she was covered. Sand clung to her limbs and coated her tongue in a fine grit. A low clicking sound shattered the silence. Tall, inky figures towered above her, magenta eyes glowing in the darkness. If it hadn’t been for the fair glimmer of magic around their limbs, she wouldn’t have been able to tell them apart from the darkness. They spoke. Hissing, popping sounds that meant nothing to her. And that meant everything. The harsh static unintelligible yet impossible to ignore. It spoke truths she wasn’t consciously aware of hearing. Truths she didn’t want to hear. Thin, insubstantial fingers reached out, tearing and ripping through the air. She fled. Past the ever shifting sand and through the half-formed memory of man and beast and civilization and looming, inky figures. Past the glowing shrines made of dark scales wider than she could see. Past memory and through time, a mournful melody coming unbidden to her maw. She came from the end, from the finality of time and the dawn of the void; from shadow into shadow. Reborn into a realm of fire and heat and death. The air rippled, static voices screaming at her departure, time and space warping into a new reality. There was hardly time to breath before she was enveloped in the warmth of a surrogate mother. “There there, Equinoce,” the voice muttered, teeth gingerly clamped around the scruff of her neck. “Let’s go find your brother, ok?” She hung limp in the grip of the older dragon, lost and confused, twin sets of memories fighting for dominion in her mind. She didn't know what to think and she wasn't sure what was a dream and what was real anymore. And she was too tired to figure it out at the moment. The embrace was warm and dimly familiar and comforting in a way that she'd never experienced. It was something that drove away the feeling of inky darkness clinging to her scales and almost made her forget about the cold darkness she was sure had been there a moment before. She was finally home.
I have seen the dawn rise on an empty world,
the flickering shadow of memory giving birth to a mocking insult of life. You will see what I have seen And you will come to yearn for the simplicity youth. But it shall never be. Your future, my past. I see how it ends. I could change if I wanted to. It's not yet too late. Hope. |
