Part 1: Equinoce
Part 2: Noxium
Part 3: Aequus

The three child-like dragons had finally settled into an uneasy semblance of routine, and, while the cave didn’t quite feel like home, it was well on the way toward it, though. Equinoce, the eldest, had quickly taken over food and herb cultivating duty. Noxium, the middle child, had all but locked himself away from the other two. What he did, no one really knew. Aequus, the youngest, was content simply in enjoying her winter break from school by scampering through the wintery town. Still, no matter how busy they were throughout the day, the three of them ate dinner together every evening. It was an unspoken rule. One of the few they had.

Despite the similarities in their coloring and size, two siblings were markedly different than the third. While Equinoce sang praises to the arcane and ancient magics and Noxium poured himself into darker and more taboo rituals, Aequus had sworn off magic in its entirety. It was a sore point between the three, but the debate had faded somewhat. Aequus owed allegiance to no deity. The fact that she had very little inane magic had much to do with her decision.

The burn in her veins was a constant reminded that something important was missing. A dull, radiating coldness emanated from her chest, pulsing in tandem with her soul.

With a rolling stretch, she shook herself out of her thoughts, a small pink tongue curling as she yawned. The blanket she’d wrapped herself in fell from her frame as she sat, lazily eying the room. Pale grey stone rose up past her field of vision, bits of rugs, carpets, and blankets scattered over the rough ground.

Equinoce sprawled atop of the only piece of furniture the three of them owned, half-lidded eyes watching the youngest dragon. A short, stubby tail flicked over the end of the table. “Feeling any better?” she asked.

Aequus shrugged. The coldness hadn’t faded and, combined with the chill ever-present in their cavern, it made for an uncomfortable experience. Not that it was exactly painful, she thought, a paw absently rubbing at a brittle scale on her chest.

Her sister’s sigh drew her out of her thoughts.

“C’mere,” she said, gesturing as she shimmied to one side, scales scraping loudly against wood. She watched the younger scramble up the thin table legs and burrow under her wing. “What’s eating ya, kid?”

A frown crossed her features. That was a list she’d never be able to reach the bottom of. Instead she turned away, curling her tail until she could nibble on the end of it. “How come…” she started, shaking her head as the chill in her bones flared. “...How come you and Nox look different than me?” she settled with.

Eqinoce blinked, tapping a claw on the faded scales next to her. Unease silence stretched between them before she nuzzled closer. “That’s something you’d have to ask Nox about, dear.”

The unhappy grumble from Aequus was punctuated by a squirm and a clatter of scales colliding with the ground. She glared up at the magenta eyes sparkling in amusement at her ungainly landing.

“Fine. I’ll go ask him,” she spat out, indignation tinting her words.

Noxium wasn’t difficult to find. He’d taken over one of the pockets in far end of the lair. The weaving tunnels between the wider caverns cold and empty as she padded through them. Cold dampness dripped from the distant ceiling, the sound echoing loudly in her ears.

As she approached the warded cave walls, she was dimly aware of a low cursing, the high-pitched voice at odds with the bitter words. Metallic clangs and shrill, magic laced whines shattered the air. Heat rippled through the air, searing against the hollow of her chest. It was somehow familiar; equally alluring and terrifying.

“Nox?” she called out, one paw poised in the air as she froze.

A dark face poked out into the corridor, eyes narrowed. “You’re not supposed to be here.”

“What are you doing?”

He blinked, twisting to look behind him, “I’m in the middle of a project.” There was a loud boom that shook the ground. “Get out of here,” he snarled.

She didn’t pause as scampered towards the narrow entrance, taking in the unfamiliar room.

The stone walls were dark, damp, and covered in a thick slime that made her uneasy to look at. A thick stone table was shoved into a corner, something dark and writhing oozing on it. As she approached, the burning stench of rotten meat and burning plastic washed over her.

Then a pair of eyes opened. The bright red sharp against the blackened, unrecognizable flesh.

Noxium was perched nearby, a frown marring his face. His eyes were cold. With a sigh, he gestured, thin runes glowing in the air. They hung in the air for a moment before fading to a deep red, the thing on the table falling still with a choked roar.

The acidity in the air rose, searing its way into her brain.

Something about it all made her sick to her stomach. There were shocks of white peeking out of the dark flesh that vaguely resembled bone.

Aequus didn’t want to think about it.

Quietly retreating, she scampered back towards her own room. The warmth normally present in her home was suddenly gone leaving only a radiating coldness.

The chilled fingers of death reaching out,
the encompassing void that follows.
Heralds of the end of time.
The end of self.
emptiness
Yet, it was not
the end. Something
reached out, shattered
through the silence and breathed

New Life.
