Mateo is a shy boy, but incredibly clever. He followed his uncle Dusk back from Dragonhome on one of his visits because he wanted to study the electrical and mechanical inventions Lightning dragons are famous (or infamous?) for. He spends most of his time studying machinery. When he first came to the Den, he was shy and reserved, and had a hard time making friends. He was lonely for a while, and spent a lot of time with Dusk. After the first time he reconstructed an engine by memory from scrap parts, he earned Colton's undying friendship, and more than friendship. Colton and Mateo's romance is generally a quiet one. They are not overtly affectionate or vocal about it. However, they can often be found curled in a tight ball together, Colton's long body curled entirely around Mateo's fluffy form. Despite his shyness, Mateo loves to play with the hatchlings, and they love him in return. Small hatchlings (and Kenton) can often be found clinging in his fluffy fur, although he is always careful not to let any of them too close to sparking wires. When Colton found Nishati's egg, Mateo's whole outlook turned upside down (as well as most of the things in their living space). The two nights he and Colton spent laying together on the nest were the most restless he has ever had. He barely slept, worrying if he could be a good enough role model for the little hatchling, and what he would have to offer. But he had nothing to worry about. Although he can often be exhausted by Nishati's boundless energy, he always seems to have the magic touch to calm her when she's upset, or help her through a sick night. Even now that she's grown a bit older (and bigger than him) Nishati still curls up next to her dad's warm furry back and her dad's long, protective form every night, knowing there is no safer place in the world for her. |
