"Oh don't you worry about me, dearie."

Trove, Part 1, Volume I
An unexpected reunion.

~

Continued from Mudflat Part 1

A young grey Mirror led an older pale Nocturne down the hall. Rockpools strode with his head held high, a wide grin spread across his face. Dewlap followed closely behind, his pale eyes flashing with uncertainty.

“Kid, I thought we had a mystery to solve. I don't think now's the best time to set me up with somedrake.”

Rocky looked amused. “Now why would I do that? I just thought it might be nice to get to know everydrake to, y'know, find out whodunnit?” He knocked on the door they'd stopped in front of.

As they waited, Rocky remained relaxed while Dewlap fiddled with his hat, tilting its brim so it covered his eyes.

The door then clicked as it was unlocked and opened, revealing a smiling dappled Spiral. “Oh hello Rocky! How nice of you to drop by.”

Rocky dipped his head. “Evening, madame. Just thought I'd introduce my new friend here to everydrake during his stay.” He nudged Dewlap, but the Nocturne seemed frozen in place.

“Rocky,” the Spiral began, “who's this?”

Before Rocky could answer, the female drake started towards Dewlap, who didn't move as his hat was lifted up. “Hello, Trove,” Dewlap whispered.

At the mention of her name, the Spiral shrank back, her large brown eyes widening in horror as she covered her mouth with two purple paws to muffle a shriek.

...

The young grey Mirror and the older pale Nocturne sat beside each other on a long couch. The dappled Spiral sat in her own chair across from them, the look on her dark face making neither male dare speak.

Rocky's gaze darted back and forth between the two elder dragons. “So how long have you known each other?” he asked brightly.

He got no reply.

“Am I supposed to guess?”

“Rocky,” said Dewlap.

“Yeah?” And then he gasped. “You said my name this time!”

“I think this is the part where you leave Trove and I to talk things out. Alone.”

Rocky's face fell, and he tried to lift it back up, but with little success. “Right. Of course. You two probably have a lot to catch up on.” He got up off the couch and walked over to the door, and said to Trove over his shoulder, “Try not to kill him.” He closed the door on his way out and was gone.

The two remaining dragons sat in silence, neither looking at the other. When Dewlap made the first move to speak, he was immediately cut off by Trove.

“So. Now you've come back. After all these years. Do you have any idea what I went through after you left?” She folded her arms over her chest.

“We both knew what would happen if I had stayed,” Dewlap reminded her.

Trove could no longer hold the tears back. “It's not fair,” she cried. “It wasn't your fault. I...can't...forgive you. I want to, but...” She covered her eyes with both paws.

Suddenly Dewlap was beside her, taking one of Trove's purple paws in one of his pale ones and led her to the couch. When they sat, Dewlap brought her close to him and wrapped his dark wings around her. Trove hung her head over the Nocturne's shoulder, tears sliding down her cheeks and soaking Dewlap's mantle.

“No matter how you feel about me now, I will always love you,” Dewlap murmured.

Trove sniffled and squeezed more tears out. “And my heart will always beat for you, no matter how much my soul rejects you,” she cried harder.

“Shh,” Dewlap comforted her. “If I knew how to undo it, I would.”

“I know...”

“And...there's something else you should know.”

Trove dabbed her eyes dry with Dewlap's mantle. “What is it?”

Dewlap tensed as he drew in a shaky breath and relaxed when he exhaled. He started to sing.

“Where the mountains meet the sky,
that's where we will fly.
See the clouds swirl,
as our wings unfurl,
when we soar high.
And—”

Trove pushed Dewlap away before he could finish, her large brown eyes stinging once more. “What are you doing?”

Dewlap shuffled closer and reached for the Spiral's paw with one of his. “What do you think?” He stopped when Trove whipped her paw away.

“Why?” she wailed. “You sing to me and make this more difficult? You'd be better off choosing another mate...like Sweetstep.” Trove noticed a look of horror spread across Dewlap's face out of the corner of her eye at the mention of the elderly Skydancer's name, and she smiled despite herself.

Sweetstep?” Dewlap scoffed. “Oh. Don't even joke about that. I know she means well, but she's...”

“Kooky?”

“Insane.”

Trove wiped away the last of her tears with the back of one paw and Dewlap reached for her again. She didn't pull away this time. “C'mere,” he said and wrapped her in his wings once more. “Just know that you'll always be the drake for me. My treasure.”

Trove sank against him and sighed deeply. “More like old fool.”

“We old fools have to stick together.”

Another smile escaped the Spiral. “You know, you didn't get to finish your song.”

Dewlap looked down at her. “You mean...”

“I do.”

Trove felt the Dewlap's chest swell and heard his heart beat faster. The dappled Spiral and pale Nocturne continued to accept each other's embrace as Trove listened to Dewlap sing. No more tears filled her eyes, and she was glad.

...

Later, Trove and Dewlap stood facing each other in the open doorway, but neither pair of eyes met.

“I'm so sorry about leaving before,” Dewlap apologized.

Trove gave a small nod. “You just thought it would've been better for me if...”

“If a soul-searcher weren't in your life,” Dewlap finished for her.

“Does Rocky know?”

Her question caught Dewlap off guard. “About…?”

“Your ability?”

The Nocturne hesitated before answering. “Yes. He does. I told him because he wouldn't leave me alone.”

“I see...just like his sister,” laughed Trove.

“So, m'lady,” Dewlap removed his hat, revealing yellowed horns, and bowed, “shall I see you tomorrow?”

“You shall. Good night, Dewlap.”

“Good night, my treasure.”

After Trove disappeared as she clicked her door shut, Dewlap moved away and leaned back against the wall, placing his hat back over his horns.

“So how'd it go?” Rocky asked from beside him, grinning.

Dewlap only shot him a glare.

Continued from Coral Part 1

The dragons had gathered into an enormous room down the hall. Kelpbeard and Saline questioned each dragon and listened to their tales in silence.

Blake’s body and voice shook as he explained what Coral and Mudflat had done to him, taking his pearl and forcing him to keep quiet about what he’d seen them do to their brother.

Rockpools’ own voice would crack at times as he told of nearly harming April and when he’d killed another, years ago. He slowly calmed, but hesitated when he spoke of seeking help from Dewlap, asking the old dragon to look through his memories to find out what was going on, and not knowing the effect it would leave on him or the Nocturne. Rocky confessed to not telling any dragon about what had been done, fearing it would only get Dewlap into trouble and leave them unable to find the dragons responsible for the Mirror’s attacks.

Dewlap didn’t speak for several moments when he was asked next. When he found his voice, it was quiet. He explained how he never intended to search Rocky’s memories, warning the young Mirror about the damage it could leave in his mind as well as causing pain to himself. Dewlap had given in to Rocky’s pleads, however, for the Nocturne was reminded of how his power made him feel cursed, just like Rocky thought himself to be after his attacks.

“I mean, I knew Coral and I were never close,” Rocky said, “but she used magic on me because I made a new friend?” he asked Dewlap in disbelief.

“She lost her Charge,” Dewlap explained. “She was only filled with grief and so she acted on her fury. She controlled you because her own friend was gone.”

Rocky looked down at his paws before meeting the eyes of his parents. “He was only trying to help. I f—f—” he tried to say, but he paused, and a small smile escaped him before he dropped it. “Alright. I can’t forgive him for what he did, but I’m still grateful for his help. He’s not what you think he is.”

Dewlap opened his jaws to speak again, but another voice cut in.

“I believe I have something to say as well,” Lumiere said, his blue smile growing. “Dewlap—” he started, before stopping, trying to smother his giggling with difficulty. “I have to thank you for destroying Marica’s jewellery. Her enchantments on them made her completely hidden from me, until you blew them to smithereens!” he added, laughing, before quickly composing himself. “And of course, for saving those poor souls from her grasp. I’ve made sure she’ll never bring harm to another dragon ever again,” the Imperial finished, struggling to hide his snickering.

Dewlap had been been eyeing the Imperial's four wings before he startled back to reality and raised a dark brow at him. “So she’s—”

“Forever trapped in a little corner of my void? Forced to think about what she did like a bratty hatchling?” Lumiere asked eagerly, baring his fangs in a hideous grin, his yellow eyes wandering from the other dragons.

Nodrake spoke for a few stunned moments as they stared after the blue Imperial. When Lumiere broke the silence, they snapped out of their trance as he turned his attention to Saline and Kelpbeard.

“Sure,” he went on, shrugging, “after he exposed Coral and Mudflat’s secret, you may never see them again.”

“That’s not helping,” Dewlap grumbled.

“But this little dragon here’s a hero. He saved your youngest from further harm and rescued the soul of Coral’s Charge as well as many others.”

Dewlap froze when the gazes of each dragon now fell on him.

“And I admit, I knew what he was and didn’t tell you,” Lumiere feigned a pout directed to the king Guardian and queen Mirror. “But there was one thing you said, Highness,” he continued, looking to Kelpbeard, “years ago, that...Alga, dear, would you be so kind to refresh our memories?”

A small sigh escaped Alga, and the yellow she-drake turned her own eyes to meet the blue of Kelpbeard. “It’s just like you said, Father. Somedrake did find out what was happening to Rocky, even if Dewlap wasn’t who you were expecting.”

Kelpbeard’s jaw hung open, and he remained silent. He and Saline exchanged questioning glances before they turned their attention back to the other dragons.

“Dewlap,” Kelpbeard began, clearing his throat noisily. “My wife and I, we...find ourselves in a very difficult position, here. Y’see, dragons in this clan have known and heard of only the terrible stories of those like...well...you.”

“I know, Your Highness,” the Nocturne replied quietly, tilting the brim of his hat lower.

“And while we can’t ignore what you did to Rocky, what Coral has done to him was equally wrong. And Alga is right, you saved our son, and...” Kelpbeard trailed off, looking back down to Saline, and both dragons exchanged gentle smiles before turning back to Dewlap.

We forgive you,” the king and queen chorused.

The words seemed to hit the white and black Nocturne with a force that nearly sent him staggering. Dewlap’s body stood rigid and he gasped, holding his breath, his chest tightening. He couldn’t even blink as multiple images flashed through his mind all at once. He felt several different accounts of pain, though the most notable were the crushing weight of earth at seeing the memories of Trove, the electrifying shock of a dark dragon with glittering green horns, the sinking he’d experienced upon searching Rocky’s mind, followed by another powerful shock as Silver’s flashed by.

When the images finally vanished, Dewlap only stared straight ahead at nothing. He didn’t seem to be breathing as he slowly began to lean back. The last thing he saw before falling over onto his back were the confused looks on each dragon’s face, and he crashed to the floor, unconscious.

...

“...lap?”

The voice seemed far away as darkness shrouded the Nocturne’s mind.

“Dewlap?!”

It seemed clearer this time, and frantic, but he couldn’t wake.

Dewlap!”

Dewlap struggled in forcing his eyes open. His vision was blurred, and he blinked a few times to try to clear it. A single grey face was practically shoved into his, and he averted his pale eyes.

“Rocky?” he asked groggily. “What’re you doing? You’re not supposed to...”

“I’m over here, actually,” the young Mirror’s voice sounded to Dewlap’s right.

Dewlap blinked again and slowly turned his head in Rocky’s direction. The Mirror smiled and tilted his hooded head to Dewlap’s left. The Nocturne followed his gaze, and his green eyes were now staring directly into the large brown of a dappled Spiral, and he startled.

“Trove! What’re you—” Dewlap suddenly stopped, still looking into Trove’s big round eyes. When he slowly began to realized that nothing was happening, he barely whispered, “What...”

Trove squeezed tears from her eyes and she couldn’t stop her smile from spreading across her face. The Spiral began to laugh. She leaned down to the Nocturne lying on the bed, and gripped his body in a tight hug, and Dewlap did the same as she cried.

He was suddenly taken aback when he felt a palm swiftly slap his cheek.

“How could you?!” Trove leaned back, screaming at him. “Making me forget you like that? I wouldn’t’ve cared if anydrake called me insane!” She suddenly stopped before quickly calming back down. “Oh, but...” Trove trailed off, quietly laughing again, drying her tears, “I can forgive you.”

Dewlap could only stare back at her in amazed silence. When he found his voice again, it was quiet. “It’s truly gone...”

Trove nodded and leaned down to hug him again, feeling the Nocturne’s arms and wings surround her, though they started shaking.

“I’m sorry!” Dewlap wailed hoarsely. “I knew I shouldn’t’ve—”

No, Dewlap, please,” Trove’s voice trembled. “It’s okay now. We’re okay.”

Dewlap blinked and squeezed the tears from his pale eyes. Once he calmed and ceased his cries, he inhaled deeply and released a slow exhale, closing his eyes as he nuzzled the side of Trove’s head with his own. When he opened them again, they met the blue of Kelpbeard and Saline, and the Nocturne smiled to them.

“Thank you,” Dewlap whispered before he suddenly froze. “Where’s Pierce?”

...

Below the castle, a few burning torches barely illuminated the brightly cloaked figure as he lay on the cold stone floor behind iron bars. Pierce didn’t move, except for his slow breathing. His eyelids were drooped and he stared at nothing.

A clunk sounded from across the dungeon and the Wildclaw flinched, his brilliant eyes becoming round with fear. He struggled to his feet and backed up against the wall.

Pierce froze when he saw the door open, but relaxed slightly and furrowed his brows in confusion. It wasn’t Mud or Coral coming for him, this time. His eyes slowly widened in amazement when he saw a white and black form with a sagging hat approach him, followed by the Guardian king and Mirror queen, but Pierce only kept his eyes on the Nocturne.

He saw Kelpbeard lift the rusted keys to the cell door, and unlocked it with another clunk, and the barred door swung open and it squealed. Pierce didn’t move when Dewlap slowly strode to him before stopping directly in front of the teenage Wildclaw.

“You helped them trap me,” Pierce whispered.

Dewlap said nothing, but barely nodded his head.

“You let the big brown one hurt me,” Pierce’s voice choked.

Dewlap remained silent, his eyes wandering from the Wildclaw’s.

“You...” Pierce trailed off, a smile steadily spreading across his sparkling face. “You came back.” He lunged forward, closing his eyes and gripping the Nocturne’s body in a tight hug.

Dewlap startled, but didn’t move, except to copy the young dragon’s embrace.

As Pierce continued to hold Dewlap, he thought he heard Saline and Kelpbeard say something to him, but he hadn’t been listening. He suddenly stood rigid and tense, and an invisible force almost pushed him over, but he felt Dewlap hold him upright. The Wildclaw gasped in pain as images flashed across his mind. The last ones he saw were the crushing memories belonging to a red-winged dragon, the freezing blast from a dark-furred Tundra, and the ones belonging to an orange dragon with a wolf’s mask, and Pierce’s body suddenly slumped as he drifted into unconsciousness.

...

Two dragons stood outside on the stone balcony, watching the blue and gold sunrise as its light made the Sea below and ahead sparkle. Dewlap stood behind Trove, gently gripping her purple paws with his pale ones. When Trove turned her head around to look up at him, Dewlap’s green eyes met hers and he nuzzled her, hist chest swelling when she did the same.

“So,” Trove started quietly, “we’re here now. Together again after losing each other too many times.”

“But finding each other more,” Dewlap replied softly.

"And you really lost...that power?"

"Yes. Soul-searching is an unforgivable power, and I don't know if the king and queen have ever crossed any that were...like Pierce and I...but they knew about dragons like us. In the end, they helped us by forgiving."

Trove slowly turned the rest of her around and gently lifted Dewlap’s burlap mantle, revealing the faint scar on his black chest. “And Mudflat really did this to you?” she asked with a hint of a growl.

Dewlap sighed. “He...abused his magic to help his sister. Coral lost her Charge, Trove, and now she’s...”

“I’m sorry. I’m sure everydrake fears she will never heal after that, especially her parents,” Trove whispered, pulling the mantle back down. “But you still did a wonderful thing. Alga and Lumiere told me how you freed Silver and the other souls from Marica. And for convincing the king and queen to forgive Pierce. I think he’ll definitely be a pawful for Bogatyr to train as a new guard,” she finished with a smile.

“Knock knock,” another voice sounded from behind them as a paw tapped on the balcony door.

They turned to see Rockpools standing in the wide doorway, a small smile on the grey Mirror’s face.

“You’re really not going to like this,” he said to Dewlap, grinning crookedly. “But since I’m now able to express my own forgiveness to you, I had to convince somedrake else to, as well.” Rocky stepped to one side, allowing a big red shape into view.

Redtide dipped his head to look down at the stunned Nocturne before him. “Mister Dewlap, thank you f’r saving my Charge.”

Oh,” Dewlap laughed nervously, eyeing the large Guardian. “Y’know, you really don’t have to—”

Red didn’t seem to hear him. “I’d suspected there was something wrong with you.”

What?”

“But I only stayed away b’cause I thought I lost my Charge t’you.”

“Is this really necessary?” Dewlap asked Rocky, narrowing his eyes slightly.

“It’ll be over soon,” the Mirror said, smiling.

Redtide lifted one massive paw and removed his hat from his head, his blue eyes meeting Dewlap’s pale green. The Nocturne could only watch as Red nodded to him once, saying nothing more as the Guardian placed his hat back where it belonged before turning around, leaving the balcony and the other three dragons.

Dewlap just stared after him until he was gone from sight. “What just happened?”

“I think he likes you, now,” Rocky told him. “So, what’s the plan?”

When Trove nuzzled him again, Dewlap sighed and said, “You’re really not going to like this.”

Rocky’s face began to fall. When he was about to protest, Dewlap interrupted him.

“I’m staying right here.”

Rocky’s jaw hung open before slowly closing them, a small grin creeping across his face. “Well, if you’re up to putting up with my other sister, I guess you can stay a while. And I think this is the part where I leave you two lovebirds alone,” he finished, backing away until his head was the last to vanish from sight.

The moment the Mirror was gone, Trove looked up at Dewlap again as he looked down to her, their eyes shining.

“So,” Trove started, “do you have any idea what we’ll be going through?”

“Of course not,” Dewlap answered with a smile. “But we’re both going to find out together.”

Nocturne and Spiral turned their heads back to admire the coloured sky, saying nothing more as they listened to the soft cries of the pink and blue gulls that flew over the castle and across the Sea. The seabirds paid no mind to the dragons watching them as they glided through the cool dawn, dancing over the small waves in pairs, before flying off again, searching for a place to land with their partners.
