There are few things that can compare to the warm joy of finding community after years spent adrift.

Ongoing struggles against the beast clans that continually threatened the borders of Sornieth’s cities, and Heaven’s Edge was no exception. Isolated and protected by the cove that surrounded it, few patrols were necessary along the city’s edge, but the merchant roads that delivered what goods could not be delivered by sea or sky were under constant threat. Merchant caravans were far too appealing targets, and even with hired guards, beastclans often tried their luck, even outnumbered.

As such, any able-bodied dragon who could swing a sword and survive a few hits could find work in the merchant district as hired arms, which paid better than day labor on the piers. Osyen was one such guard-for-hire, and had spent near a decade working the caravans that passed to and from Heaven's Edge each day. His reliable sword and quick reflexes had kept him employed and fed, and his good humor and fierce protective streak had earned him a good reputation amongst the worker's districts in the Edge.

Still, there were many sleepless nights he spent watching the stars along the merchant roads, and privately wondered if this was all he was good for. There was a quiet, tired part of him that longed to use his sword and claws for a greater purpose than trade and profit.

And sometimes, when he travelled the twilight between awareness and sleep, he dreamed of forest-green scales and bright eyes, and feel of silk against his chest.

‘Oi! Sellsword! Pick up the bloody pace! Yer not being paid to look pretty!’

Osyen’s lip curled, fighting the urge to snark at the caravan lead. They’d been pushing hard the last four days, hoping to outpace the first freeze of autumn, and his body ached. A few harpies had gotten a lucky jump on him the day before, and his hastily bandaged chest still smarted as he walked. He wasn’t paid enough to deal with attitude, and not for the first time wished he’d taken a contract other than this one, but he'd needed the money. Still, he'd think twice before taking another contract with these cutthroat merchants working for the crown.

Ah well. They were nearing the Edge, and he’d be able to afford a room and ale in The Cross and Cup once he saw them back to the merchant district. He'd see his healer when he returned, and hopefully have enough coin to pay for a good few meals and a soft bed before he headed out on the next contract.

Just another day on the path.

I just long to see your face beyond my dreams

‘And then the snake had the gall to LIE to his face, and claim he’d never even seen the ledgers! Johnson outright laughed in this face at that one- before he took the fool’s hand!’ The scarred tundra slapped his hand against the tavern table with a roar of laughter, nearly spilling his ale. ‘Justice served again! I checked my paystubs and what do you know, he’d shorted my own books the last I brought them to him. Had the guard not hustled the old man off to the Guild to face their judgement, I might’ve asked for a finger in my own right. It takes a brave fool to cook the books of a harbor lad!’

Osyen took a long drink of his own tankard, watching the other sellswords howl and banter, too tired to participate himself. He was always happy to return to the taverns that passed as home, but the last two weeks on the road had drained him, and he would rather see how far he could stretch a few coins at the healer than spend the rest of the night with the lads.

He drained the last dregs of his drink and set it down at the bar with his coin, and headed out of the lively tavern into the cold, quiet night. The fresh seaward breeze kept him company as he strolled through the market district, headed north towards the cove.

and I swear, I'll wait out the age for you

His healer, Rene, was unfailingly rude whenever he returned to them with ill-cared for wounds, admonishing him for losing scales and courting infection, but they were fast, discreet, and usually gave him a discount in exchange for helping them with more unruly clients from time to time. He whistled to himself as he neared their door, rapping his knuckles thrice once he arrived at their doorstep.

After a few moments, the door cracked open and a bedraggled obelisk eyed them from behind a doorchain. ‘Oh for the shade’s sake, what did you do to yourself this time?’ they groused, removing the chain and ushering the grinning pearlcatcher inside. ‘I swear, next time I’m not letting you in, you overgrown lump. What stupid beast did you wrestle with this time?’

‘It’s good to see you too, Rene, you’re looking radiant as always.’ Osyen ducked under the doorway, scraping his boots on the mat at the entryway. ‘You know, I think you told me you weren’t going to let me in again last time as well. I was worried!’

if this dream would come true

The healer’s eyes narrowed, claw pointing to the bed set near their workstation. ‘I tell you that every time, you awful bugeater, and then you show up here crusted in blood and guts and filth regardless.’

Osyen smiled charmingly, sitting on the bed as directed with a subdued wince. ‘Well, you keep letting me in. A threat’s hardly a threat if you don’t back it up with something.’ Rene’s snout twitched at the movement, eyeing his middle suspiciously.

‘Oh, I’ll show you a threat… go on, let’s see the damage this time.’ Osyen gave an embarassed chuckle, hissing as he lifted his undershirt away from the scabbed abrasions on his chest.

Düskashe,’ Rene muttered, ‘Shadowbringer below, you little peabrain, why did you not come straight to me when you returned? This is infected, I’ll need to start debridement now.’ They pushed the larger dragon down with a firm claw, and began collecting potions and tools from the tidy worktable beside them. ‘Do you need anything for the pain or shall I just spell the wound?’

Osyen shook his head mutely as they began muttering and cleaning the wound, claws holding the bed tightly. It took a quarter hour, but the wound was not as badly infected as Rene had feared, and a few healing spells cleared what sickness lingered.

‘Well it’ll still take two weeks for your scales to grow back and fill the gap, so mind your chest in whatever brawls you get yourself into in the next week, but you should be fine. Why you don’t see the caravan healers after injuries like this I won’t understand.’

and I swear, my love was made for you

Osyen watched them finish wrapping the bandages tiredly, worn out from the exertion of keeping himself still. ‘Caravan healers have no reason to keep my secrets, Rene, and even if they had a mind to keep their mouths shut, half of them would charge me double for the privilege.’

Rene snarled, hands smoothing over Osyen’s bandages, carefully avoiding the raised scar of the brand just below his collar. ‘You’ve paid your dues in blood and sweat. Branding deserters is a relic of times past, and one Heaven’s Guard would do well to leave in the past.’

He covered the claw of his dear friend with his own, smiling up at them brightly. ‘Ah, but it gives me such a grand excuse to come see you, and for that I cannot help but be a little grateful.’

The obelisk huffed, wings flapping self-consciously as they stole their hand back. ‘Cease your flirting, you incorrigible pirate. I’m still charging you for the salve and bandages. And I’m going to make you climb my roof and repair the tile that broke while you were gone. I don’t want to wake up to a puddle when the next storm blows through the harbor.’ Osyen laughed shamelessly, pulling on his shirt and tunic before fishing out his coin purse.

‘Anything for my favorite healer, eh? Now tell me how the harbor’s been, I heard there was some trouble with Johnson’s store that had the district abuzz-'
bang! bang! bang!

‘Healer Rene! Healer Rene! I found these weird dragons bleeding all over everything and they won't let me bandage them!’

Osyen and Rene looked at each other, recognizing the voice. 'Q...'

Before Osyen could move, Rene was at the door, throwing it open to the street. 'Q, what have I told you? Don't go near injured dragons without me! They could be feral!'

Quilo waved his hands urgently, tail flicking from side to side. 'I found them hiding in the sewer behind the shop, they're covered in blood, they need healing! They didn't seem aggressive, they just... I don't think they're okay. They won't speak to me!'

Osyen grabbed his sword, striding out the door and grasping the young coatl's shoulder gently. 'If they can't speak then they might not be able to control themselves, Q. Where did you leave them?'

'Out behind the store- I just, I don't think Mister Johnson will let them stay there, and I- there's so much blood, Ossie, they need Rene to come right now.'

'Osyen, I changed my mind, you'll pay me back by keeping our little idiot of a scribe from being murdered by some Ferals.' Rene had already gathered her emergency bag and was striding out the door, locking it behind her. 'We need to leave now. If they're still losing blood then we don't have time to explain the intricacies of bloodblindness to the child.' Osyen dragged a frustrated claw down his face, glad he'd gotten into the habit of keeping his sword with him at all times.

'Okay, just... stay behind me. If they're going to attack someone it might as well be the person with a weapon.'

and only you,

The three of them dashed down alleyways and over aqueducts, all well-versed in the winding streets of the harbor district. Only a few minutes had passed before they arrived, Q directing the two older dragons to the waterway that ran behind his employer's store.

Osyen wasted no time hoisting himself down into the depths of the manmade river, landing with a splash. He peered towards the exposed stormwater drain upstream, calling up to the anxious dragons above him- 'Q, you said they were near the entrance? I don't see them!'

'They moved farther back when I tried to get closer! I'll come down and show you!' Osyen shook his head.

'No, I'm not going to risk them lashing out at you. Stay with Rene, let me find them first.' With a final nod to Rene, who had placed a placating hand on Q, he turned into the drain. As he entered, he placed his hands together softly, murmuring a quick spell to light a flame above one hand, and rested the other on his scabbard. 'Hells,' he murmured to himself, 'why do I have a bad feeling about this?'

He continued forward quietly, speaking louder, hoping to be heard over the rushing water. 'Hello? I come in peace, my friend said you were wounded, he brought a healer! We just want to help!'

He heard a splash to his right, and turned, holding the flame up to illuminate the cramped space.

'Cause you're the truth

A fully grown spiral stared back at him, green eyes wide and fixed on the flame in his hand. She was clothed in a torn dress soaked in blood, and clearly terrified.

'Whoa there, gods you're quiet. Are you hurt? My friend said you needed a healer-'

'Please, no fire, we pass through, we leave. No fire, no fire.' The spiral's accent was unfamiliar, her pronunciation of northern water tongue rough, but parseable.

'Sparks,' Osyen cursed, extinguishing the flame and casting a small light charm instead. The resulting light was dimmer, but immediately the spiral untensed, tentatively moving away from where she had been frozen against the wall. 'I- uh, hells, how do I say sorry in Old Water- no hurt, no pain, I no speak good coldoceannorth water, you speak Common? Speak Merchant? The spiral perked up at his last words, nodding.

'Yes, I speak Merchant! You only use fire for light, not hurt. Thank you. I and clanmate just passing through, we no mean harm, we leave now.' The mercenary sighed in relief, shoulders dropping.

'No, no, you don't need to leave. Did you see the little dragon come in here earlier? He doesn't speak merchant or water good, he's still young, not travelled. He bring me, and he bring healer, said you and clanmate were hurt. I bring them? Help heal clanmate?'

Her eyes widened in understanding, nodding furiously. 'Yes, yes! Clanmate injured, beast clan hunt us, we fell in river, clanmate too big to carry out, river pull us into territory, tiny dragon yell, I try to leave territory but clanmate hurt, can't move.'

Osyen nodded, still somewhat confused by her words, but it was clear neither her nor her clanmate intended any harm to them. 'I get healer and little dragon, you take us to clanmate?'

The spiral nodded, gesturing towards the entrance of the drain, and Osyen strode out, calling out to his companions as he walked. 'Rene, it's fine, they just don't speak common, Q scared them, they thought he was mad at them for being in his territory or something. You can bring him down, the spiral here knows some Northern Water and Merchant speak, gods know what else.'

Rene glided down, catching Q as he followed close behind them. 'Northern Water? Shades, who even speaks Northern anymore? After the tsunami I thought most of the native speakers died off. Is the spiral injured?'

'She's fine, her dress is covered in blood but I don't think it's hers. Not a native speaker, she speaks better Merchant than Old Water. I can't place her accent, but she's got bright eyes, maybe she's native to some isolated sunbeam ruins clan? She doesn't speak any common.'

'Well, you can translate, my merchant is rusty but I don't need to speak to her to heal her or her friend. I'll let you introduce us.'
