b1642902d701be930d0fba8ec29592ed0e35f1c2.png young love, burning bright

I love everybody because I love you

The valley was wide and the clan ever-growing, but she was young the first time she met them.

Her father, Marco, had once mediated a dispute between the Singing River clan and the Cracked Plain clan, and since had been welcomed with open arms by both. Their family had quickly taken advantage for the circumstances and begun working as farriers between the two, and Ent had just had her first Proving flight and was old enough to make the journey, albeit without burden.

The young spiral was near overflowing with excitement, pestering her elder brother with question after question about the clan across the valley as he packed for their trip.

“Does the river clan really all have algae for hair? Tai tai said they all sleep underwater and when they wake up the fish have made seaweed nests in their manes, and they don’t have enough time to get it untangled. But Zip said that Tai tai is a liar with her pants on fire and that the river clan actually only naps underwater and they sleep in rafts that float–“

“Oh for the love of the glade, kid, they’re just another clan. They eat slightly more fish than the average dragon because they’re right next to a honkin’ massive river. They sleep in nests and tents and trees and caves just like every other clan, and the only seaweed I’ve ever seen there is in their cooking. You have got to chill out, or I’m going to tell dad you had too many chili flakes and are too hyper to come with me.”

Ent widened her eyes at her brother, dragging her claws down her face in horror. “Robert!!!! You would NOT! I’ve been waiting practically a million years to go on a package trip and I haven’t had even a SINGLE spicy thing all morning! I am sooooo calm. Like, so so so so chill.” She stuck out her lower lip and clasped her paws together, dancing on her feet. Robert eyed her with thinly veiled amusement, knowing full well the excitement of being allowed to visit a neighboring clan for the first time.

“Okay, just please try to stay still and quiet when we make our deliveries to the clan heads, okay? I promise we’ll have time to explore the markets when we’re done with the work part of the trip.” Ent nodded eagerly, snout twitching. Robert rubbed her head fondly before nodding to the pile of packages still unsorted. “Now get back to being a good little mail demon, the quicker we have everything packed the sooner we can leave!”

When you stood up, walked away, barefoot

The bulk of the mail was handed off to the clan’s own messengers to be distributed, but a few larger packages were held back, to be taken directly to the leaders of the clan. The bulk of them were merely small tokens to reaffirm the partnership in the coming year, but a few were more sensitive messages that could only be trusted to be carried by a “neutral” party: Robert and Ent.

Their family’s reputation as mediators and go-betweens was not unfounded— they had never failed to deliver sealed messages with anything but total confidentiality. Only vetted and oath-bound adults were allowed to carry messages with the clan seal, and Robert had taken his responsibility seriously. Ent followed him closely, peering around his larger form to wonder at the unfamiliar camp, but his stride never slowed on his way to the central clan hub. Despite her excitement, Ent kept close to her brother, at one point slipping her claw onto his tail to keep pace as she cheerfully admired the sight of a clan at work.

When Robert finally came to a halt, Ent nearly bumped into him, preoccupied with admiring the river that carved into the hill they’d landed on. It gleamed in the late afternoon sun, and dozens of dergs were setting crawdad traps, scrubbing laundry, and playing amongst the banks. River dragons indeed, Ent thought admiringly but no wonder they love it so feverishly, when one river provides so much for the entire clan. Ent swiveled back to her brother at the sound of his pointed cough, blushing as she realized a few elegantly-dressed dragons had emerged from a large tent ahead and were steadily approaching the two young couriers.

She followed her brother’s lead and sketched a respectful bow, standing straighter as the small procession halted before them. Immediately, the eldest of the bunch clapped excitedly, smiling warmly at Ent and her brother.

“Ah, Robbie, dearest, introduce me to your little sibling! What a pleasure, don’t tell me we’re the first delivery they’ll make!” Ent blushed, causing the elder to chuckle.

Robert couldn’t hold back a smile, reaching out to clasp the elder’s outstretched forearm. “Misha, this is Ent, my little firecracker of a sister. It is indeed her first official run between clans, good eye. However I think she’s already enamored with your river, so maybe she’ll refuse to come home with me and het first delivery will be her last!”

Ent blushed harder as the rest of the procession shared knowing smiles, but Misha merely threw back his head and laughed, clapping Robert on the back. “Then she has excellent taste! Nothing on the goddess’ green earth can compare to our teykh’s beauty, and you’ve not even tasted this year’s bounty from her waters. Come, let us eat and you can give us the latest from the valley’s other clans.”

And the grass where you lay left a bed in your shape

I looked over it and I ached

I loved everybody because I loved you

I don't need the city and I don't need proof

All I need darling, is a life in your shape

I picture it, soft, and I ache
