Biography
We sent jellyfish into space to learn more about zero-gravity environments! Those jellies that grew up without gravity are used to it, but hindered when reintroduced to Earth. You can read more about them here: (The Atlantic)

These little worms live deeper in the Earth than any other multi-celled organism that exists! They spend their whole lives living in tiny fractures in the rock, eating the bacteria that can also be found there. Read more about them here: (Live Science)
|
The common shrike spends almost all of its life in the air! Its aerodynamic shape and slow molting means it can stay airborne for months at a time, eating insects as it flies. It's believed they even sleep in the air! Read about a study of these birds here: (Seeker)
|
Recent research shows that the orchid mantis, unlike similar bugs, doesn't actually camouflage itself among orchids to hunt - in fact, it doesn't mimic an orchid at all!. Instead, its unique shape and coloration are an imperfect mimic of a general flower, causing other bugs to mistake it for a nectar-filled flower and fly right to it! Read more here: (Discover Magazine)
|
The Atlas moth is one of the largest moths in the world, beaten only debatably by the Hercules moth for wing area and the White Witch moth for wingspan! Like many moths, they can't eat in their adult form, relying on stored food from their caterpillar stage. Read more about these giants here: (National History Museum)

Coarse, damp sloth fur is an ideal environment for a lot of organisms. In particular, some species of sloths have a symbiotic relationship with an algae, which gives their fur a green tinge that is believed to help them camouflage in their forest home. A 2010 study discovered that one kind of algae that grows on sloths is actually not found in any other place! Read about the discovery here: (BioMed Central)

The Antarctic Toothfish is a fascinating example of animal adaptions to cold Antarctic waters. Most fish would freeze in the icy environment, but the toothfish - along with some others that share its environment - have evolved specific proteins that act as an antifreeze in their bloodstream! Read more about our research into this chilly fish here: (Ice Stories)
