Wind-Up Key

The idea of time and space should be one of pieces of a puzzle
in the process of being solved.

<< Origins III. >>

Morpheus had been following one of the leylines, straight from Mirrorlight to the Forum. It should had been an easy travel, allowing him to avoid the main beastclan locations, and well-managed paths making for quick passage.

Instead, no more than a half day journey into Shadow lands, he found himself looking down at the Ruins, so choked with fog he couldn’t see the enemy beyond it. And then there were the two young dragons who looked like they had just ran through a rain storm.

As neither looked to be interested in ending the odd staring contest between them, Morpheus took it upon himself to ask a simple question, “Why are you here?”

The youngsters turned their stares to each other. Embarrassment perhaps?

Eventually the fae gave in to the intense looks from the mirror. “The woods played tricks on us and we got lost.”

Hm, there was a story there. But it wouldn’t help him figure out how he lost the trail using one of the most constant sources of magic in the world.

The silence returned.

He supposed he could take the two with them back up north. And if worse came to be, he could head back to Light and take a ship around. Not unheard of. Then again-

A polite cough came from the mirror. He gestured to a spot behind him. “What is that?”

Morpheus turned around.

Oh dear.

He had never heard of a magic source strong enough to affect the leylines, but if it was possible, the thing in front of him would cause it. If they had been farther west, the object would have blended in with the mushrooms, but here next to one of the darkest places in the world, it shone out like a beacon. A portal of some sort?

How had no one noticed before? He couldn’t let this be. What if a less-experienced dragon lost their way? Who knew how many could be hurt if he didn’t stop it.

“Don’t stray from here,” he turned his attention back to the young ones. “I’ll be back soon.”

The fae’s crest fluttered, but neither fought against his decision.

He quickly found himself squinting as he walked closer to the portal. It appeared to flicker, and yet, remain motionless at the same time. There seemed no difference between him standing outside the portal, and reaching what must be its entrance. If not for the change in magical energy he felt around him, he would had though the portal was still ahead.

Right before the fear he was trapped forever overwhelmed him, the light finally faded.

He cautiously opened his eyes. The magic here felt… strange. Almost scattered. The leylines could barely be felt, and certainly did not suggest any location he had ever visited.

Yet, it was as if he had never entered the portal. Less fog certainly, the buildings no longer taken by the Bramble and no beastclan in sight, but he knew he still stood on the same hill he was on before.

A shrill shriek erupted out from behind him. The two dragons had somehow ended up in a pile on the ground. He would have sighed, but he really should have expected them to sneak along.

The mirror was the first to notice him, giving an almost apologetic smile. But then the fae looked up as well, freezing in place. “What is that?” she hissed out, echoing the earlier words of her friend.

A shadow slowly blanketed them. Morpheus’ eyes grew wide as he looked up as well. A strange creature flew overhead – almost larger than even an imperial – face set in anger.

Eleven have mercy, today was going to be a long one.
