Time is weird.
Sometimes it works, and sometimes it gives you a headache and a margarita.

<< Origins IV. >>

It wasn’t that Loki didn’t see the portal. Of course a great warrior like him would never forget to look where he was going. And besides, it was tiny. How was he suppose to notice something he could barely put in foot in? Yeah, that’s definitely it.

Totally.

Either way, the brave hunter had found himself in a peculiar situation. Just peculiar. Not completely and utterly terrifying as his world view came crashing down with this most recent discovery. Nope, not that.

Instead, he calmly introduced himself to the almost-dragon creature thing. He did not stutter, not even a little. Why would a wise and completely mature dragon act in such a manner?

Not like the almost-dragon creature thing, who immediately bared its teeth at him. Very rude, and very not mature of it. A growl is not a polite introduction. Who taught it that?

(He most certainly didn’t scream, and that scream was definitely not so high-pitched that it sounded like a one-day old crying for their mother.)

After the creature had stopped its rudeness, it invited him to its den – no dragging, thank you very much. Not sure why it decided to live in the middle of a bunch of old ruins, but he wasn’t going to mention that.

Wasn’t it lonely though, living by itself?

The creature must have decided they had gone far enough in, shoving – excuse him, guiding – Loki into a sitting position with its six arms. They stopped on a relatively flat spot of land. The walls around them still stood, if just barely. He would have complimented the creature, if not for the fact that the moment he looked back, it vanished into midair.

Did it want him to wait? Well, he didn’t want the creature to not-drag him again, so maybe he would just stay here. At least for now.

He was very bored by the time he heard noises indicating life again. The creature should have left him something to do. But he perked up as he waited by the entrance.

There were voices, speaking real words and not just grunts. And then real dragons, being shepherded along by the very same creature that had left him there.

Three of them, by the looks of it. A skydancer, perhaps close in age to himself. And behind him, a mirror and fae too, barely into adulthood. Did they come here the same way he did?

He was jerked out of his thoughts when the skydancer noticed him. “Who are you-”

The creature roared before he could finish, and they settled into silence once more.

Loki found himself huffing before he could stop. “That’s rude,” he complained.

The skydancer turned his face towards him with raised eyebrows, looking ready to say something vulgar.

But the creature just laughed. A genuine laugh, deep and body-moving. It almost seemed to flicker. And then it actually did, fading in and out like a firefly’s light turns on and off, before its body disappeared completely.

When it flickered back in, it was a fraction of the size it was before. Was it a beastclan? It had no wings or fins, though its facial features were more like that of the centaurs and the serthis. Same size too. Of course, neither had two legs like the creature currently did.

A voice rang out, “That was a cruel trick, fairy. I doubt you have the court’s approval.”

Was that the fae? Feisty kid.

The so-called fairy didn’t seem to mind, only chuckling once more. “Why would the court care, little cousin? We rule these lands, as much as those so-called gods would like otherwise. And if I want to use a little magic, so be it to them.”

“Uh, pretty sure this is Shadow territory, right?” Dang, he needed a good excuse for that one, what with the stares. “Don’t think Shadowbinder goes around giving magic to the beastclans.”

No, not better.

The fairy’s grin gave away to a deep grimace. “I will be plain, dragon. This is not your time, and magic is still as potent as it was before your gods influence.”

His eyes sparkled. “We can time travel?”

The skydancer gave him a look. “You’re worse than the young ones.”

Loki smiled. “But I’ve always wanted to see the beach.”

Sighing, the fae waved a hand, muttering something he couldn’t quite catch. Though, he did hear the words “fool” and “useless” before the world blended away in the same blinding glowing blue light that brought them there to begin with.
