Forgotten Crown

History has a long reach.
Doesn't mean fate can't grab you by the hand and pull hard.

<< Origins II. >>

The mirror had been young when he found her. It was the fourth night of the frigid hail that spread through the land like death itself. He did not know that he would have trouble finding food in the coming days. Blessed with ignorance, he had only been interested in finding a dry place to sleep.

If he was smaller, he would have found plenty of spots – and probably plenty of bruises as well – but he just lumbered on. Perhaps, if he had been less tired, he would have noticed the degree the woods seemed to push him along. Instead, when he finally found a large enough closure, he laid down without even looking around, out in an instant.

He was not expecting to be awaken by a small, but loud, fae, who was yelling in what he would later call annoyed excitement, about how rude it was to enter someone’s home without permission. She dashed across the damp ceiling in her ranting, but his eyes focused farther back in the cave.

Where was her nest? Surely he should have seen the sapling, even as tired as he had been. But there was none. The soil showed no presence of fae, not even a ledge large enough for her to sleep on.

He turned back to the dragon, who had finally calmed down enough to sit down. "I'm sorry," he told her. "You must have hidden your nest well."

She huffed. "Of course I did. There's no one around for miles. And you shouldn't be here." She didn't seem to notice the implied question in the statement, though he supposed that shouldn't been viewed as unusual.

"I'm just passing through." He nodded towards the entrance. "There was a bad storm last night."

The dragon's crest folded inwards as she looked out. "What storm? I didn't hear anything, and there would still be water dripping from the branches if that was the case." She sped outwards.

He frowned, but followed her. She was right. If it wasn't for the fact that he could picture the biting wind, the icy rain hitting against his face, he would agree. The path looked bone dry, and the weather had picked a more polite fall temperature.

"That's impossible," he whispered. "Even for here."

The fae looked at him, with her strange, unreadable eyes. "Not for the fairies. Even someone like you should know that."

"Like me?" He couldn't help but smile at that.

"Even a dragon knows about the fairies. A trick like this would be easy for them." She spoke slower than needed, as if she was trying to explain a basic fact to a child.

He didn't think she would appreciate it if she knew he found that wording more than a little funny. So instead he nodded along. "So they trapped us here?"

"No, not if you know the rules." She fluttered closer. "I could lead you out."

Oh? How curious. "I don't have anything of value."

She looked away. "Doesn't matter. If they're going to trick me, I'll rather leave anyways." She flew to the edge of the clearing. "You coming?"

"Shouldn't you pack up first?" Surely she didn't mean to leave just like that.

"Don't have anything." A mirror would have shrugged there. "Better to pack light. If we hurry, I know a good fishing spot."

Huh. He liked her. And surely she was going to get herself into trouble by her lonesome. He let go of any doubts, and followed her into the unknown.
