“And it’s nice to see you again, Fayne.” The large lavender Guardian gave a nod and a smile before turning to the next waiting recruit.

“And you…” Fayne said, even though he wasn’t sure if Ček was paying attention to him anymore. Probably not. He was busy.

Fayne turned toward the chaotic mess of tents and roaming dragons and beasts. This was nothing he ever remembered experiencing before, not even when he traveled to protect their ambassador on infrequent trips outside the labyrinth. It would take some getting used to, this. No royalty to keep things in order.

“Fayne?”

He spun when he heard his name, and couldn’t help but smile. “Lightning.”

The golden Guardian approached, carefully, he thought. Her smile was as he remembered. “What brings you here? How are Heeroku and the others?”

Fayne shook his head. “It’s not a happy tale; I’d rather not tell it right now.”

Lightning immediately frowned. “I see. I’m sorry.”

They were quiet for several seconds, maybe as long as a minute. Fayne was surprised at how comfortable it was, the silence. He occupied himself with looking around the camp and the colorful dragons of all shapes and sizes passing by. All living and working together, sharing laughs and scars.

“You know, Derecho and Stratus are still here,” Lightning said suddenly.

Their children. “They are?” He looked around, unsure he’d be able to pick them out. He probably could. He remembered they were beautiful. “Can I see them?”

“I’m sure they’d love that.”

Fayne has been shaped by charity and planning. He joined his clan as part of a treaty with his hatch clan. Though the clan leader was not impressed with their ambassador’s deal, Fayne proved more susceptible to the magic swarming the clan’s homeland. Within a few days, he was no longer a Guardian, but a Skydancer. The clan leader took this to be a good omen, and had Fayne trained as a fighter and royal guard.

Over the years, Fayne showed himself to be loyal, stern, and noble in presence and mind. He cares deeply about his friends, but that doesn’t get in the way of his duty. Perhaps his only fault is that he preens like a Pearlcatcher, but that’s only because he believes he represents his clan and to not be at your best is a great disservice. He was probably better at making a good impression than he realized. In the course of his duties, Fayne met the leader of the Tempest Chase, Lightning. In the interests of good relations, Fayne traveled with the Chase back to their home in Wind. They shared a nest, and two of his children stayed with their mother. He didn’t know if he was disappointed when he had to go back home, but he had his duty. Otherwise, his life as a royal guard kept him in comfort with the Crow Clan, but his Spartan tastes saved most of his pay. He said he might need it some day…

One day, he did, but there was no time to get it. Once close at the Gladekeeper’s side, his clan was ripped away from her and banished and scattered in punishment. Over thirty Skydancers perished in the upheaval, and Fayne barely escaped with his life. He wandered alone for almost a year until an idea struck him. Tilting his wings, he headed for Wind territory.

His reception at the recruitment table of the Tempest Chase was better than he could have imagined or hoped for. Lightning immediately welcomed him, thrilled to see him even if she was a little distant with the years. Though he missed his old clan, he thought he could make a new home here. His lifetime as a royal guard served him well in the Tempest Chase, immediately giving him a place of importance next to the other leaders. He still makes his pay protecting important dragons and beasts, and he still has a family. It’s just not the one he thought he had.

   » Lightning past and future
════════════════════════
.
Fayne didn’t know how disappointed Lightning was when the two part ways the first time they met. Of course, it wouldn’t have changed anything. His clan needed him, and as a royal guard his job was extremely important. But since the decimation of his clan, he’s found that one past meeting rekindled can even change the future forever. Lightning’s happiness at his reappearance seems to have put him in the good graces of even the most difficult members of the Chase, and Fayne has to admit… he’s pretty happy, too. But, Lightning is quick to remind him, he’s always had cheap tastes.

════════════════════════
.
Fayne objected to being made the leader of the Tempest Chase’s guards for some simple reason: he knew that, one way or another, he and Lightning would end up together… and that relationship would make this job more difficult. No dragon made it more difficult than Lorne, the longest-standing member of the Chase with a guard contract. Lorne feels slighted at being passed over for the position despite having been with the Chase for 1500 years, and Fayne has to admit he understands. He knows he has a long way to go before being accepted by all the dragons he’s supposedly in charge of...

HEEROKU - memory

Shortly after Fayne joined the Tempest Chase, a Slight Eyewing came to the Chase as well. Even though it did not appear to be injured or in need, it stayed around, following Fayne in particular. He at first tried to ignore it, thinking that he couldn’t possibly believe in magic like this anymore since the Gladekeeper had cast his clan out of their home. The Eyewing won him over eventually, though. Not all bad things are bad forever, after all. Nothing lasts forever, the good or the bad. Fayne finally took the Eyewing into his care and named her Heeroku. She stays out of sight of most of the Chase, but Fayne knows she’s always there, watching with her many eyes.

━━ notes ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
» Reunited with his children, Stratus and Derecho, he took the same surname they shared in honor of his old clan: Crowwing.

» Fayne has held onto what Lightning calls “cheap tastes.” It bothers her, as she likes to give good gifts and he never knows what to do with them.

» Before moving to Lightning’s tent, Fayne was very shortly Puyan’s tent-mate. They did not get along at all when sharing a tent, but, now that they aren’t, they’re actually friends.

» Fayne’s position as leader of the guards of the Chase ensures he spends most of his time pairing guards with clients. He didn’t know he had an aptitude for this kind of match-making, but apparently he does.

notes

> Fayne and Lightning met when Fayne was 27 years old (9 March 2018). They shared a nest and parted ways, assuming they'd never meet again.

> Fayne was originally from a clan in Nature territory. When his former clan was uprooted in a cataclysm, he was presumed dead. He only learned some of his clan survived when he met Lilika (25 November 2021).
