Biography
CALLUM
The non-confrontational and idealistic scholar enthralled by Sornieth's lore and mysteries.
The non-confrontational and idealistic scholar enthralled by Sornieth's lore and mysteries.
Once upon a time, there lived a Pearlcatcher who grew up in a peaceful life of luxury. Fascinated by history but never interested in making it, he spent his days looking through archaeological records and accounts of distant wars. His teachers often praised him for his careful attention to details and talent in committing them to memory, but they worried about his anxious nature. It was one thing, they said, to dislike conflict, and another thing to try to avoid it all together. He would have made a great speaker and debater if he could just steady his voice, stop twitching his tail, and avoid nearly sobbing in frustration when put on the spot. It was always something. Many seemed to give up on trying to help him improve. This lack of faith would have hit him hard if one archaeologist hadn't stood by his side and acted as his mentor. Callum had always looked up to the elderly Pearlcatcher, as a teacher and a dragon. His mane was dull, his eyes glassy. But his pearl was so layered with wisdom and the observations of a sharp mind. Callum's feelings almost went beyond respect. Naturally, when the archaeologist invited him to study the Hewn City, Callum jumped at the chance. He knew he would be safe under his favorite scholar's wing. The excavation at the Hewn City did not go as planned. All precautions were taken to avoid structurally unsound-- and potentially haunted-- areas. The shade-gripped city claimed no one's life that day, but Callum's was forever changed. Deep underground there lay buildings that had not seen light or felt fresh air in ages. And deep within these buildings were holes that led down to the center of Sornieth itself. At least, that's what some say. Looking into the darkness of one such pit, Callum began to feel faint. His grip on his pearl weakened and, in the flash of a moment, his treasured soul tumbled into the abyss, hopelessly lost. The pearl plummeted deep into the earth, chipped and battered on the way down. If it could have screamed, it would have. The mindless Shade took hold of the falling pearl, tendrils grasping and corrupting it at every opportunity. Blackened and broken, it rested at the bottom of the seemingly bottomless pit, alone if not for a shard of Sacridite. Outside the city, Callum sat wishing. Inside the city, the Sacridite seemed to... sprout? Wishes have power, and this Callum always believed. He had always been a wisher, and his heart had room for wishes big and small, selfish and selfless. Yet all he wished for in the following weeks was for his pearl to return unharmed. Deep within the pit, a spindle of Sacridite lifted up the damaged pearl, cleansing it of the Shade and filling in the cracks with its own golden crystal. This will do, a newly awakened entity thought. But this... it does not yet fulfill my purpose. To say that Callum felt relieved when a young Imperial flew up to his lodgings holding a pearl that was clearly his (but also clearly "repaired") would be a bit of an oversimplification. Here was a dragon who had felt convinced that his soul was not only certainly lost but also most probably defiled. And there his pearl was, right in front of him, damaged but not corrupt, and held in the claws of an Imperial! A barrage of questions soon followed the initial shock, but after a two-hour long interrogation, the Pearlcatcher noble seemed satisfied. Not only that, but he felt strangely... calmer around his new acquaintance. |
