 Kori was often reminded by her mother the gratitude she should be expressing that her mother was already a self-professed ‘master’ in learning how to perfect and utilise magic grown within the body. Her mother’s strict adherence to education made her a strict and sometimes insufferable woman to be around. Kori grew able to mimic her mother’s lecture on the importance of magic safety verbatim, lips moving as her mother’s did, oftentimes causing the other learners to laugh. But inside of her sat a gratitude beyond any mere vocabulary. She fiddled with the ends of her starlight cloak, gaze drawn to its hypnotic, shimmering hue. It mimicked the magic inside of her. Or so her mother noted. Kori was blind to see the magic resting in her soul, but she believed what her mother told her. Her fingers ghosted the cloak’s velvet and she found herself lost in thought. She was slow to learn. Despite her belief in her mother, she worried. Worried she would simply not excel. Kori saw the way in which the others took to magic like a fish to a stream. Amou and Pharia both seemed to soar with open wings, leaving Kori to flap in the dust they left behind. She saw how happy her mother grew to see them learn, and Kori felt the blooming jealousy wriggle painful in her heart. But she was never one to be deterred. Where she saw herself starting to lag, she would force herself into a new confidence. No matter what, she would make her mother proud of her ability to master magic. She would be on Amou and Pharia’s level. She would be their peer, and not their source of pity. Even if, in reality, no such feelings existed. |
