basics Diederich does not look princely. His gaze seems permanently glued to the ground, and he holds very little of the self confidence and poise that his siblings boast. Still, under that meek outer layer, Diederich is brimming with the determination to become more than a disappointment. |

In the kingdom of Lumerae Vana, a queen had three heirs. They were called heirs, but in reality, the throne was far, far from their reach--so perhaps it would be easier to call them children. The queen had three children, and she expected great things from them. The youngest and eldest craved their mother's approval, and so they let her stern hand guide their ambition, desperate to meet her high standards. Cormac, the eldest, sought his glory through war, and left the kingdom to become a soldier in the Southern Icefield. Phyrra, the youngest, didn't stray far from home, slipping into a nearby Shadow clan and quickly establishing herself in their thieves guild, rising to notoriety. Perhaps it was the pressure from his parents, or something in his blood that made it difficult for him to persue a similar, ambitious path, but Diederich just couldn't keep up with his siblings. In his studies he excelled, but when faced with any sort of confrontation, his anxiety cripplied him, leaving him a stuttering mess. The queen didn't mask her disappointment, but his father, the king, wasn't quite ready to give up on his son. He encouraged (with no room for argument) the boy to attend meetings in the court as a scribe, in the hopes that the social atmosphere would spur Diederich out of his shell. However, during his very first meeting, the prince found himself unable to concentrate on the negotiations at hand, instead, he was distracted by how the other dragon, some distant warlord, conducted himself. It was the way the other dragon held himself that Diederich found odd. He appeared confident, but as Diederich drowned out his words to watch him, the prince began to notice the split second stiffness that seemed to precede his every movement, how he took the opportunity to scan the room the moment the queen took her eyes off him, and the way his finery hung on him, loose in all the wrong places. Perturbed by his findings, he sought out his mother after the meeting and blurted out his concerns. While her advisors sneered at the prince's audacious claim, the queen was intrigued by her son's sudden burst of courage. It was the first time she'd seen such a confident look in his eyes, and while she sent spies out to investigate the warlord in order to humor her son, she was astonished when they came back with disturbing news. The real warlord and his entourage were found rotting in a nearby marsh. It turns out that the imposters they'd met with had murdered the party and had intended to trick the queen into aligning her kingdom to a dead dragon. Diederich had found his calling, and for the first time in her life, the queen looked down at her son with pride in her eyes. As time passed, Diederich poured his time and energy into honing his skills. Soon, he was able to discern the direction of a negotiation from the moment the visitor stepped into the court. The queen sent away her advisors and left only her husband and son by her side, and the king was overjoyed Diederich had found his place in the kingdom. But not everyone was happy with the queen's decision. All it took to bring down the prince was a curse. One second, he was proofreading a contract for his mother, the next, he was choking on his own spit, unable to stop the flow of the inky black saliva as it poured from his mouth. The culprit left no trace of their identity, and whether they were one of the queen's jealous ex-advisors or a jilted noble was never discovered, but one thing was certain--and that was their intent to kill the prince. When the kingdom's best healers were unable to remove the hex on the prince, the monarchs sent him off to the renowned Wings of Mercy hospital, harbored in the territory of the Vogelzang clan. There, the head healer, Sieghilde, managed to extract the curse from the prince, but as with all curses, it left its residue on his soul. Too shaken to return home, Diederich sent word back to the kingdom about his intentions to stay with with the Vogelzang. He wrote that he thought it would be best to see what life was like outside the kingdom, and so he would stay in the town as an ambassador, in order to secure an alliance between the two clans. While his mother seemed to disapprove of his decision, she respected her son's wishes and allowed him to stay with the Vogelzang, where he remains to this day. |
