Lorelei has lived long with the Vogelzang. Sometimes, if she closed her eyes, and concentrated very, very hard, Lorelei swore she could still remember how it felt to be curled up against her brother's warmth--and how the rot and pestilence of the plaguelands smelled as it filtered into their den from the outside. When she was barely old enough to open her eyes, she was given to the Vogelzang in exchange for their loyalty and a monthly shipment of supplies to her birthclan. For years afterwards, she lived and fought with the warriors of the Vogelzang, growing up in the relative safety of the dark woods, with only vague memories of the family she left behind. When the kingdom of Lumerae Vana sent a member of their royalty to live with the clan, she--to the surprise of everyone, including herself--found herself being courted by the bashful Prince Diederich, and soon married him, cementing the relationship between their clans. When her father's crimes became too much to keep hidden, and the Virtulent burned to the ground, she was finally given the truth. She swore to be fierce, but not cruel. Her father's blood might run through her veins, but she would never be him. |
