It was Jaki who found her. She was only a hatchling, stumbling through the desert, rawj8Kn.png
all on her own in the vast expanse of shattered rock. When he stooped down, wings spread, she pressed herself to the ground, trying to hide, then crawled stubbornly away from him as he landed. She had to have known, even then, that she could not get away, but she refused to give up, refused to just lie down and die even after her parents had abandoned her in the wilderness.

Too brown, too dull, too ugly, her father had said as he left her, but Jaki told her she was beautiful. Lucia cooed that she was adorable, Ushaivcho told her she had heart, and Heiðrún – Heiðrún told her that she had potential. Elsa did her best to live up to each of these expectations, growing to take her place in the scouts and in the messenger corps, helping Lucia with her records, and never ever giving up.
But it was to Jaki that she turned when she felt she had nothing to offer. Jaki was the one who had found her, the one who had saved her, and the one who thought – the first one who had ever thought – that she was beautiful.

She loved him in adoring silence, knowing that she was not good enough for him to love her in return. She told herself not to hope for anything, and refused to admit, as she pushed herself in the training fields, exercising her talons and expanding her size to its very largest extent, that she hoped one day he would notice her. They wouldn't ever be lovers, of course. She was sure that one day her beloved Jaki would find someone worthy of him, and she would be happy for him so long as he was happy. But in her dreams, they were fighting partners and she could protect his back as he fought and help to keep him safe and whole. 		cc1198fdb36b550eba38f90d0ae56cb3669169ab.png

art by dragonNMR 		It was this dream which filled her mind as she dove at the field, pulling up sharply just at the last minute, feeling the strain in her wings as she shifted them to pull her upwards so that her claws just skimmed the ground, catching pebbles in her claws as, in a real battle, she would catch the enemy's flesh. Losing herself in the dream and the movement, she almost missed Jaki's arrival, but then she slowed, catching air in a downdrift and coming to rest in front of him. "Did you need the training fields?" she asked humbly. She could practice elsewhere, or find work to do.

"No," Jaki told her, heavy claws scraping the earth, and she realized with some surprise that he was nervous. "I was looking for you."

That was when he told her that he loved her. She has not left his side since.
