They may be warriors or smiths, but there is no shame in being a gatherer or tending to the hatchlings either. All jobs that must be done are of equal importance. Likewise, every member is expected to find their place and fulfill some role in which they can contribute to the clan. The Ashfall Waste is a punishing land and the Forge Warden clan does not survive by expending all their resources allowing freeloaders and layabouts to remain in their ranks. Ximena, with no job, and more importantly for a guardian, no Charge, would have been driven from the clan long ago had she not been Rudanis' mate, a dragon valued for both his steadfastness in battle and his gentle tending of the clan's hatchlings.

Ximena desperately wishes to secure a place for herself in the clan on her own merit, not just that of her mate's. But as a guardian who has not yet found her Charge, she has a difficult time settling herself to anything. How can she devote herself wholeheartedly to arms training, or smithing, or tracking prey, when in the back of her mind she can't forget that her Charge is somewhere out there waiting to be found? She spends most of her time away from the clan lair, traveling across Sornieth seeking her Charge, and something to bring meaning to her life. The clan Matriarch, Teiwaz, does not particularly approve of having a clan member who doesn't pull her own weight, or of the strange, outland ideas that Ximena brings back when she returns to the lair to rest after another unsuccessful Search, but she tolerates it for Rudanis' sake, and because Ximena is absent more often than not.
