" It's disorienting to see everything all in color. But, I suppose it's a nice vacation view."

Taniwha's parents were grandchildren of the Firstmade. He never got to meet them; his mother and father ran away from their joint shadow/lightning heritage to settle in Fishspine Reef, back when the world was still young enough that most spaces had never been inhabited by other dragons. His childhood was spent in their small clan just crowding on the edge of Leviathan Trench, no one yet willing to swim over the edge and dig a cave home into the trench-side. The difference was in the light: Fishspine Reef with its cultivated glowkelp and tiny shining fish and the Trench with the obscuring black that not even the sun pierced. But it was what came out of the Trench that drove him into his profession.

The oarfish were bizarre, floating stunned along the edges of the cliff from the pressure change. The deeps fish were a little more concerning, with their long fangs and brighter lights. What alarmed the adults were the massive forms that started to peek over the edge. Huge mottled brown or blue coils spiraling down into the dark, massive shapes moving on the horizon, strange lights that flashed in patterns and outlined battles in the night. Taniwha, his young clanmates and neighbors didn't pay attention to the possible danger, racing through the reefs, chasing bright fish and daring each other to go closer to the drop off. Until one day they watched a young guardian friend get dragged away by an enormous whale from the Trench, never to be seen again. No one, Taniwha included, could do anything besides gawp and cower as he was pulled screaming into the dark, unable to tell when they stopped hearing the screams and when it was just in their heads.

Then the adults began organizing patrols on the border and like many young hatchlings, he was fascinated by their armor and demeanor. Surprisingly they indulged him, showing him their carapace and shell armor, the tridents and swords, and soon enough the scars from enormous teeth. He pretended to train alongside them, chased and caught smaller predators around the reef, pushing himself to match the larger breeds. It was good to have a cause, now that he was getting older, and nice to have the younger dragons feel safe enough around him to play outside again. When he became an adult, he asked the head of the Trenchguard if he could enlist and was accepted immediately.

Between weapon training, team drills, and patrols, it was almost a year before he went on his first expedition below the drop off. With more clans starting to live just over the edge, patrols had to be increased, more guards had to be trained and they were realizing that soon, they'd have to bring the fight to the beasts rather than react to them. With newly-grafted Plague-designed bioluminescent bulbs, five of them dove into the dark, learning how to follow each other by their single point of light, feeling currents, and actually using their sonar. It was more terrifying than he could have imagined, totally blind and flinching at everything that brushed his scales, and he praised the Tidelord that nothing came out of the depths to challenge them. It took months for him not to dread each trip down, much longer than it took to trust his squad leader and team mates. Wasn't hard when you expect something coming to eat your face and it's a friend instead.

His first monster was a huge black shark that took a massive bite out of a ridgeback under their watch before diving over the edge. They took off into the darkness, tridents pulled from their sides as they chased the swept currents and bouncing sound of its fleeing form. Once it slowed, they all plunged their tridents in, clutching desperately while it sped and thrashed. Amid the clawing and stabbing, Taniwha would reach out to slice off fins, others cutting the tail to keep them from being dragged too far into the deep. When it finally stopped moving, they pulled out and pointed east, towards home, shaky and hyperaware. The adrenaline, the powerful sense of being of one mind with others, the relief of seeing the ridgeback end up okay, these were what bound him to the Monster Hunters for decades.

For seventy years, he chased whales, sharks, squid, and sea serpents further down than anyone had gone before, as older, larger clans moved in down the cliffs. He worked with guardians, mirrors, wildclaws, imperials and ridgebacks, training, hunting and teaching them every strategy he knew to stay away from teeth and tentacles and spines; he even had several scars to show for his wisdom. But now, with clans moved in even down to the Spiral Keep's depths, the Monster Hunters are less needed than before. Most of the clans have their own protectors, though they are still sometimes called on to teach new recruits, or those unused to depth fighting. At the encouragement of some of his teammates, Taniwha is taking a tentative retirement. Sunlight is novel now that he's above water, and he's taking advantage of it in the Sunbeam Ruins. Luckily this clan is quite friendly to old warriors.
