The Electrician
"Now which one of these sockets isn't working... Ow! Not that one..." Son of the fisher Isonade and clan maintainer Funayurei, Stormwing was born around the same time that Aromis, the Imperial inventor, moved into the clan. And naturally, his off-limits lab was perfect hatchling bait. The squawking chromefeather, the flashing lights and noisy alarms; thankfully his lab was far enough away from the rest of the lair that the children didn't disturb too many people making their forays. While some hatchlings grew out of the childish impossible challenge, Stormwing was immediately hooked. And when the ancient imperial found he foiled two of his failsafes by adjusting the wiring, he even gave him a few lessons and spare materials to play with. When Torrigan retired, she left behind the arc wards she'd built for the borderguard: electrical field generators that the Lightning fae Enishi could tap into to monitor their borders. Aromis knew how they worked, hatchling's play for an experienced drake, but didn't have the interest in keeping them up. But he did have a young dragon interested in becoming his apprentice.... He suggested instead that Stormwing learn how to maintain them, as a practical way to get more experience with electrical contraptions. Excited to stay with his family, the ridgeback took him up on his offer and over time has realized that the work Aromis does and what he'd like to do are very different fields. He doesn't need his projects to live in order to be satisfying. He's still learning the finer points of tinkering and wants to improve the arc wards around the clan. Though not a Lightning dragon, he's learned how to conduct electricity with a little mentoring from Thomas by forming his Light magic and letting the lightning subsume it. He's aware that dragons with his training and skills are often needed among the Lightweaver's exaltees, given their neighboring flight, but he's much happier staying home. |
