Biography

Raikae
The Younger Twin

Theme Song: -

Let us be grateful to the mirror for revealing to us our appearance only.

Like two sides of the same coin, like a mirror so perfect that it's impossible to tell who is the reflection and who is real, Rai is inseparable from his twin brother, Raku. They enjoy telling others that they were hatched from the same egg, and they can almost make you believe it. The two of them are hardly ever seen apart, and many dragons can't even tell them apart. However, many feel there's no need to bother, as the pair are both infamous for their chaotic magic, whose wild effects they seem to find great amusement in, and their mischievous, untrustworthy natures. Although they are wildly charismatic they don't seem to care much about anyone but themselves, and anyone else is merely an amusing toy for them to play with until they tire of it.

Rai is the younger brother, though only by a few minutes, but it's not something he lets bother him much. He is the more cheerful and energetic of the two, and much of his charm comes from his natural exuberance, rather than calculation like Raku's. However, even knowing that, one would be hard put to differentiate him from his brother, since they've spent enough time around each other to pick up their mannerisms. In fact, they often imitate each other on purpose. One watching carefully might notice that Rai is the dragon just a little more likely to smile than to smirk, and to laugh at himself and move on when something goes wrong than to pretend it never happened. However, this doesn't make him any more trustworthy than his brother. If anything, he seems to have more fun working mischief, and so goes out of his way to do so even more than Raku. Although his older brother is the schemer and planner of the two, more clever than he is in the art of manipulation, Rai is the one who comes up with the details. When a trick is particularly clever, Raku is surely to blame, but when it happens to strike with perfect aim at someone's particular phobia or secret embarrassment, Rai is usually behind it.

The pair of them are incorrigible flirts, charismatic and attractive in both a physical and emotional sense. One of their favorite games is to each flirt with the same dragon in turns, never letting on that they're being courted by both twins instead of just one. At least, not until they finally get their victim in the same room as both of them, and watch the dawning realization of how they've been played set in. They also enjoy both flirting with the same dragon at once, growing more amused the more flustered the object of their attention grows. (Although if said dragon responds positively to their dual attentions, they've been known to take it in stride. The pair have no qualms about sharing a bedmate either.) Most of it is more because they think it's funny than out of any genuine interest, however. They'll even flirt shamelessly with each other if they think it will get them an interesting reaction. They have no interest in each other, but Rai in particular thinks the game of chicken they'll play with each other is as funny as the way his clanmates react to it.

Their magic is almost as notorious as their mischief. The two of them share an unusually wild type of magic, uncontrollable and unpredictable. What it touches, it twists and transforms. It's not always something enormous or obviously dangerous, making streams giggle instead of gurgle, or fruit shriek when it's bitten into, but it's disruptive and unnatural now matter how funny or brightly colored it might be. Some magical purists frown and suggest that they might be just as twisted as their magic, but most continue to believe that that's an old wive's tale. They may be too sly for their own good, and a twinned plague on whoever they happen to be bothering at the moment, but they aren't tainted. Or, at least, not in a way that's detectable. The clan's few optimists hope that they'll eventually grow out of their mischievous ways, and that their magic might settle with them into something less wild and unpredictable. Rai enjoys the uncontrollable element though, reckoning that a twist even he can't predict only makes things more fun. For the time being, they're not very interested in learning to control it, just finding it amusing to see what twists it takes, and what unfortunate it happens to.

It's because of this unusual magic, in fact, that they ended up in the clan in the first place. Nature dragons loathe that which goes against the natural order. Magic that made their beloved trees pick up their roots like skirts and scramble away, or birds to burrow into the dirt instead of fly was an abomination to their birth clan. They were taken into the unnamed clan almost more out of pity than the promise the pair showed (a decision which a number of dragons came to regret due to sudden uptick in headaches they caused.) Their magic is a wild card, useful in a pinch, but not to be relied upon. Still, the two make up for it with their charisma, cleverness, and devious ways. Rai can be incredibly charming when he puts his mind to it, with a certain depth of sincerity that Raku can't manage to project quite as often. He doesn't need magic to convince a dragon that he's their new best friend, and make them willing to do almost anything for him. It's just a pity that he uses that ability for his own amusement as often as he does on the unnamed clan's behalf.

Rai and Raku are inseparable, almost never seen apart. They eat together, practice magic together, and even sleep together. They enjoy pretending to be each other, although Rai secretly derives more joy of it than his twin. He thinks it's rather amusing for one of them to seduce someone, and see how many hints the pair can drop before they realize they haven't been romancing the same dragon. In general, he has a great deal of fun from pulling something over on someone. Because Raku is the more calculating of the two, it comes more easily to him, so Rai has to work harder at it. However, the extra work makes him feel even more rewarded when it pays off. He prefers his twin's company above all else, and will always seek it first, but he enjoys the company of others a little more than Raku too. His more outgoing nature means he seeks attention for it's own sake from others. Although it's subtle and difficult to detect, he tends to be the one of them who initiates a conversation most often, and flirts with just a little more cheer, a little more sincerity, than Raku. If anyone could simply let his mischief roll off their back and return his cheer and tricks alike, they might even win Rai's admiration.

“Now, let's play a game, which one am I? If you can pick correctly, you'll win something special, just from me. But if you're wrong, then you'll owe me a forfeit...”

Short Stories

1.

They were nestled against each other under the shade of one of the few non-scorched trees. The sky was, surprisingly, clear that day. There wasn't as much smoke and ash as there usually was. It was the slow season for the volcanic eruptions, where the lava began to move slightly slower than usual. It meant that the hardy plants could finally get some well-deserved sunlight. The weather also meant that a storm was promised. This season was one of the few seasons where rain came. The storm would fill the rivers and lakes again, and the great water-gathering would commence among some of the clans and beast-clans. Of course, no one in the unnamed clan needed to worry about water. They had their own methods of getting it. They weren't as unfortunate as some of the other clans were. The twins themselves knew this too well. They realized they had struck gold when it came to a clan such as this. They were, for the most part, tolerated. That meant free food, free boarding, and all the pranks they could manage as long as they kept under the radar of Jeanne.
Much to the displeasure of the twins, the day was slow. Most everyone was preparing for the rain. The crows which were usually spread all around the clan grounds and then some were slowly hopping along, making their way back to their queen. The local ghost had long since retired to his creepy forest where he would rest and plan some more pranks. Even the clan's warriors had retired to their dens in preparation of the weather. That left the twins with almost no one to play pranks on. It was dreadfully boring! They would have nothing to do until the rain came. Once the storm hit the clan grounds, they would have nothing to do again other than spend time in their den and perhaps sleep. They wanted to do something before then. Give themselves something to talk about before the weather turned sour.
“See that?” asked Raikae. He raised his head and looked in the direction of some movement. Raku followed his brother's gaze. There was a skydancer, walking among the clan grounds with a bored expression. Neither of them recognized the dragon. No one came to the clan grounds without an invitation. It was unheard. The twins were about to get up and go interrogate the strange dragon, until they saw Jeanne. The mirror landed beside the skydancer and began to lead her around.
“Future member?” asked Raku.
“Fresh meat?” asked Raikae at the same time.
“Maybe just visiting.”
“Perhaps just looking.”

They watched as Jeanne left the skydancer. The dragon was left alone among the clan grounds. She looked around without any interest in her gaze. The twins looked to each other and smiled. Raku nudged Raikae's head. They lowered their voices and discussed a strategy. Just something to cause some embarrassment. Nothing too mean, nothing involving their unstable and unpredictable magic. A simple prank wouldn't have Jeanne breathing down their necks. The twins probably wouldn't even get in trouble if they played their cards right, but at the moment, this skydancer was the only prey they had.
Raku got up and Raikae hurried to a place where he could watch and hide until it was his turn. Raku trotted along and came close to the skydancer. He gave a bright smile and attempted to take one of her claws. She snatched it away, her icy eyes narrowing.
“Forgive me, my lady,” said Raku, “I just couldn't help but admire you from afar. What is your name?”
The dragon stayed silent and continued to glare. The air around her grew slightly colder, even with the heat of the land. Raku's smile grew. He forced it to remain filled with admiration and sincerity. It was the ones that didn't respond right away that were the most fun.
“No name? Why, a beautiful maiden such as yourself must have a name that equals your beauty!”
The skydancer remained silent. She snorted at him and eased around the imperial. Raku watched her walk and nodded to his brother. They switched almost perfectly. Raku followed them silently, keeping out of sight. Raikae sped up to walk alongside the skydancer. Her eyes darted to him and narrowed. She came to a stop and looked him over. Raikae gave her a bright smile. It was more sincere and charming than his brother had managed, one of the few skills Raikae possessed that his brother did not.

“Come now, why don't I give you a tour of the clan grounds, my lady?” he asked as he reached for her claw again. She snatched it away and narrowed her eyes even further. Raikae was a little taken aback. Perhaps this was going to be too hard. No. Nothing was that difficult. They just had to keep working at it and, eventually, she would wear down.
“I require no tour from the likes of you,” she said, her voice thick with the Southern Icefield accent. Raikae took note of the blade hanging from her side. He made a mental note to be careful. The last thing he needed was to get him or his brother hurt.
“If I may ask, my lady, why not?”
The skydancer remained quiet. Raikae frowned, his eyes shimmering with hurt. Inside, he was feeling nothing but joy at such a game. The feeling grew when he noted the expression of the skydancer turned a little softer.
“Only visiting. I am seeing if this clan is fit for me. So far, no. It is too hot.” She continued to walk. Raikae hesitated behind and then switched with his brother again. Raku trotted to catch up to the female and walked beside her.
“This is the Ashfall Waste, my dear,” said Raku, his voice soft. “It's supposed to be hot.”
She stopped and shot him a glare. Raku smiled at her. “No offense intended. So what do you do for a living?”
“None of your business.”
Raku continued to follow her. Her attitude was as cold as her homeland, it seemed. He inched a little closer to her. “Oh, but I would like to know.”
He brushed his wing against hers, and soon found himself facing a very angry skydancer with a hand on the hilt of her sword. Raku raised his claws in defense.
“No offense intended.” She turned on her heels and stormed off. Raku made his way back to his brother and hissed at him. “This is impossible,” he mumbled. “It's so fun!”
“Agreed. I think we need to take another direction with her,” said Raikae. “Seeing the look on her face is going to be priceless!”
“Even better since she's not staying around.”

Raikae took his place beside the skydancer again and smiled at her, yet his grin soon faded. Jeanne had made her way back towards them. Raikae gave the clan leader a large grin.
“Jeanne! Hello!” he said.
The mirror gave him a glare before turning to the skydancer. “He hasn't been a bother has he?”
Thunder growled towards the north. The skydancer looked in that direction towards the impending storm. She smiled and shook her head.
“No. Not at all. Neither of them have been a real bother. If anything, they have been entertaining.”
Raikae was about to agree that he had been entertaining the female, but he froze. Them?
“Good,” said Jeanne as she eyed Raikae. “Please, come this way. We can discuss if you wish to join us or not after we give you details on your job.”
The skydancer bowed her head and followed Jeanne. Raikae continued to stand there, staring after the visitor and the clan leader. He looked over at Raku who had rushed over.
“What's wrong?” he asked. Did he really not hear what the skydancer said?
“She said... them.”
Raku looked after her himself, standing there in the same shock as his brother. “Really?” he asked, after several minutes of silence. He felt a smile make its way to his lips. “Interesting.”
