Biography

Raku
The Older Twin

Theme Song: -

Let us be grateful to the mirror for revealing to us our appearance only.

Like two sides of the same coin, like a mirror so perfect that it's impossible to tell who is the reflection and who is real, Raku is inseparable from his twin brother, Rai. They enjoy telling others that they were hatched from the same egg, and they can almost make you believe it. The two of them are hardly ever seen apart, and many dragons can't even tell them apart. However, many feel there's no need to bother, as the pair are both infamous for their twisted magic, whose wild effects they seem unbothered about controlling, and their shrewd, untrustworthy natures. Although they are wildly charming, they don't seem particularly interested in the wellbeing of anyone but themselves, and anyone else is merely an amusing pawn for them to play with until they tire of it.

Raku is the elder brother, though only by a few minutes, but it's a position he is inordinately proud of. He is the more haughty of the two brothers, a proud dragon whose calculating nature especially leads him to see others as pawns on a chessboard, or tools to get what he wants. It's possible that the only other dragon he really cares about is Rai. However, if there were someone precious to him, he would probably keep it so close to his chest that even they might not realize his feelings. He hates allowing anyone to have any power over him, no matter how small, and the ties of affection are included in that. Even with Rai, he has to maintain his position as the elder brother, more authoritative and in charge, to truly feel comfortable. Although it's the natural reaction of most dragons to try to assert their own power and authority, those who let him take the lead in whatever he wishes find themselves more well treated, and the object of less gossip behind their backs or tricks. He sometimes hints that something terrible happened to him when he was young, that drove him to seek security in power and adoration, but as it's something he almost always uses as a ploy to gain sympathy, it's unclear whether or not that's true.

The pair of them are incorrigible flirts, charming and eloquent. They both know they're exceedingly handsome, and take full advantage of it. After all, don't they see their elegantly gleaming scales, eyes like living emeralds, and shining midnight plumage reflected in their twin every moment they're together? They even dress identically, silks and garlands carefully chosen to enhance some facet of their beauty. Vain as they are, they use their nature magic to keep the flowers they wear always fresh and blooming, give off a delicately sweet scent. However, should some unwary dragon breathe too deeply of it, they might find that there is a sinister secret hidden within the beauty. Raku has a particularly silvered tongue, and though he can speak sweet words that will charm any dragon into his bed, he enjoys collecting conquests and broken hearts much more than he's interested in a long-term relationship. He happily uses his beauty to charm favors and gifts that he never intends to return. He's clever enough that often his victim never realizes how they've been tricked, feeling only privileged to have gained his attention. However, some of the cannier members of the lair have caught on to him, much to his displeasure, and no amount of eloquent speeches can convince them of his sincerity anymore.

Despite their charming demeanor, they still have quite the notorious reputations amongst the rest of the clan. The two of them are tricksters, liars, and mischief makers, and utterly remorseless about the consequences their actions might have for others. The only thing they take care about is not to do something they could be punished for, or something that could be definitively traced back to them. For this reason, they never touch Jeanne, or any of the particularly senior or powerful members of the clan, but anyone else is fair game. If it doesn't hurt either of them, then it doesn't matter. Raku is particularly calculating, and usually responsible for whatever part of their trick that relies on manipulating or fooling someone else. Proud as he is, he particularly enjoys pulling one over on some other dragon who's especially splendid in some fashion, bringing the mighty low. Gambits that make his clever clanmates look stupid, or put his loveliest clanmates in a situation that spoils their beauty are his hallmark. It's because of this that no one in the clan trusts them, but why should they care about that? They can always trust each other, and what else matters?

Their magic is almost as notorious as their lies. The two of them share an unusually wild type of magic, uncontrollable and unpredictable. What it touches, it twists and perverts. It's not always something ugly or obviously dangerous, turning snakes into hissing flowers or tree leaves into windchimes. But the brightly colored flowers can still strike and bite, and bereft of its leave, the tree withers and dies. Raku likes to think of it as a metaphor for his own self (ignoring the more ridiculous twists their magic takes, of course.) It's all but uncontrollable, since they can only really choose the magnitude and the target, and then stand back and see what happens. Raku secretly dislikes this, since anything he isn't in control of makes him feel insecure and irritable, but he hides it so completely that only his twin knows about his uneasiness with his own magic. Since he can't figure out how to control it, he's deemed it impossible. Because of this, they're not very interested in even trying to learn to control it, just finding it amusing to see what twists it takes, and what unfortunate it happens to.

It's because of this unusual magic, in fact, that they ended up in the clan in the first place. Nature dragons loathe that which goes against the natural order. Magic that made their beloved trees pick up their roots like skirts and scramble away, or birds to burrow into the dirt instead of fly was an abomination to their birth clan. They were taken into the unnamed clan almost more out of pity than the promise the pair showed (a decision which a number of dragons came to regret due to sudden uptick in headaches they caused.) Their magic is a wild card, useful in a pinch, but not to be relied upon. Still, the two make up for it with their charisma, cleverness, and devious ways. Raku in particular enjoys weedling valuable information out of an unsuspecting target, who only thinks themselves lucky to be the object of such a handsome and witty dragon's attention. He would make a truly expert spy if he were trustworthy enough for it, and if he could agree to be separated from his brother for longer missions. In the meantime, however, he is very useful as an information gatherer and distraction, when he cooperates long enough to do so.

Raku and Rai are inseparable, almost never seen apart. The pair are always within reach of each other, even sharing the same bed. On the rare occasions they are separated, the two still seem to share an uncanny connection, and if Raku needs him, Rai will come running. They often enjoy pretending to be each other, although Raku secretly harbors a great deal of disdain for those too foolish to have learned how to tell them apart. The differences between them are perfectly obvious to him, after all, so they should be apparent to everyone else as well. However, the subtle differences in their appearance and demeanor are much harder for others to identify, especially if they're deliberately hiding them to watch others flounder trying to figure it out. They spend so much time so closely together that even a tundra's keen sense of smell has trouble telling them apart, since even their scents have blended together, an issue that they take care to confuse further by wearing the same flowers and the same perfume. If anyone were clever enough to consistently tell them apart, they might even win Raku's admiration.

Short Stories

1.

They were nestled against each other under the shade of one of the few non-scorched trees. The sky was, surprisingly, clear that day. There wasn't as much smoke and ash as there usually was. It was the slow season for the volcanic eruptions, where the lava began to move slightly slower than usual. It meant that the hardy plants could finally get some well-deserved sunlight. The weather also meant that a storm was promised. This season was one of the few seasons where rain came. The storm would fill the rivers and lakes again, and the great water-gathering would commence among some of the clans and beast-clans. Of course, no one in the unnamed clan needed to worry about water. They had their own methods of getting it. They weren't as unfortunate as some of the other clans were. The twins themselves knew this too well. They realized they had struck gold when it came to a clan such as this. They were, for the most part, tolerated. That meant free food, free boarding, and all the pranks they could manage as long as they kept under the radar of Jeanne.
Much to the displeasure of the twins, the day was slow. Most everyone was preparing for the rain. The crows which were usually spread all around the clan grounds and then some were slowly hopping along, making their way back to their queen. The local ghost had long since retired to his creepy forest where he would rest and plan some more pranks. Even the clan's warriors had retired to their dens in preparation of the weather. That left the twins with almost no one to play pranks on. It was dreadfully boring! They would have nothing to do until the rain came. Once the storm hit the clan grounds, they would have nothing to do again other than spend time in their den and perhaps sleep. They wanted to do something before then. Give themselves something to talk about before the weather turned sour.
“See that?” asked Raikae. He raised his head and looked in the direction of some movement. Raku followed his brother's gaze. There was a skydancer, walking among the clan grounds with a bored expression. Neither of them recognized the dragon. No one came to the clan grounds without an invitation. It was unheard. The twins were about to get up and go interrogate the strange dragon, until they saw Jeanne. The mirror landed beside the skydancer and began to lead her around.
“Future member?” asked Raku.
“Fresh meat?” asked Raikae at the same time.
“Maybe just visiting.”
“Perhaps just looking.”

They watched as Jeanne left the skydancer. The dragon was left alone among the clan grounds. She looked around without any interest in her gaze. The twins looked to each other and smiled. Raku nudged Raikae's head. They lowered their voices and discussed a strategy. Just something to cause some embarrassment. Nothing too mean, nothing involving their unstable and unpredictable magic. A simple prank wouldn't have Jeanne breathing down their necks. The twins probably wouldn't even get in trouble if they played their cards right, but at the moment, this skydancer was the only prey they had.
Raku got up and Raikae hurried to a place where he could watch and hide until it was his turn. Raku trotted along and came close to the skydancer. He gave a bright smile and attempted to take one of her claws. She snatched it away, her icy eyes narrowing.
“Forgive me, my lady,” said Raku, “I just couldn't help but admire you from afar. What is your name?”
The dragon stayed silent and continued to glare. The air around her grew slightly colder, even with the heat of the land. Raku's smile grew. He forced it to remain filled with admiration and sincerity. It was the ones that didn't respond right away that were the most fun.
“No name? Why, a beautiful maiden such as yourself must have a name that equals your beauty!”
The skydancer remained silent. She snorted at him and eased around the imperial. Raku watched her walk and nodded to his brother. They switched almost perfectly. Raku followed them silently, keeping out of sight. Raikae sped up to walk alongside the skydancer. Her eyes darted to him and narrowed. She came to a stop and looked him over. Raikae gave her a bright smile. It was more sincere and charming than his brother had managed, one of the few skills Raikae possessed that his brother did not.

“Come now, why don't I give you a tour of the clan grounds, my lady?” he asked as he reached for her claw again. She snatched it away and narrowed her eyes even further. Raikae was a little taken aback. Perhaps this was going to be too hard. No. Nothing was that difficult. They just had to keep working at it and, eventually, she would wear down.
“I require no tour from the likes of you,” she said, her voice thick with the Southern Icefield accent. Raikae took note of the blade hanging from her side. He made a mental note to be careful. The last thing he needed was to get him or his brother hurt.
“If I may ask, my lady, why not?”
The skydancer remained quiet. Raikae frowned, his eyes shimmering with hurt. Inside, he was feeling nothing but joy at such a game. The feeling grew when he noted the expression of the skydancer turned a little softer.
“Only visiting. I am seeing if this clan is fit for me. So far, no. It is too hot.” She continued to walk. Raikae hesitated behind and then switched with his brother again. Raku trotted to catch up to the female and walked beside her.
“This is the Ashfall Waste, my dear,” said Raku, his voice soft. “It's supposed to be hot.”
She stopped and shot him a glare. Raku smiled at her. “No offense intended. So what do you do for a living?”
“None of your business.”
Raku continued to follow her. Her attitude was as cold as her homeland, it seemed. He inched a little closer to her. “Oh, but I would like to know.”
He brushed his wing against hers, and soon found himself facing a very angry skydancer with a hand on the hilt of her sword. Raku raised his claws in defense.
“No offense intended.” She turned on her heels and stormed off. Raku made his way back to his brother and hissed at him. “This is impossible,” he mumbled. “It's so fun!”
“Agreed. I think we need to take another direction with her,” said Raikae. “Seeing the look on her face is going to be priceless!”
“Even better since she's not staying around.”

Raikae took his place beside the skydancer again and smiled at her, yet his grin soon faded. Jeanne had made her way back towards them. Raikae gave the clan leader a large grin.
“Jeanne! Hello!” he said.
The mirror gave him a glare before turning to the skydancer. “He hasn't been a bother has he?”
Thunder growled towards the north. The skydancer looked in that direction towards the impending storm. She smiled and shook her head.
“No. Not at all. Neither of them have been a real bother. If anything, they have been entertaining.”
Raikae was about to agree that he had been entertaining the female, but he froze. Them?
“Good,” said Jeanne as she eyed Raikae. “Please, come this way. We can discuss if you wish to join us or not after we give you details on your job.”
The skydancer bowed her head and followed Jeanne. Raikae continued to stand there, staring after the visitor and the clan leader. He looked over at Raku who had rushed over.
“What's wrong?” he asked. Did he really not hear what the skydancer said?
“She said... them.”
Raku looked after her himself, standing there in the same shock as his brother. “Really?” he asked, after several minutes of silence. He felt a smile make its way to his lips. “Interesting.”
