Some dragons would kill to escape this life and others would kill to keep it. In the end, everyone needed a habit or two to distract themselves from the pain they feared to the pain they had. Life wasn't fair. She was a cruel and unrelenting mistress that could offer happiness before ripping it away a second later. Those that realized Life's cruel ways were better able to stare her in the eyes and challenge her. Dare her to summon Death to come and take them away. This is what Gauvain did. He laughed in the face of Death and mocked Life to her face. From the time he hatched, he knew when everyone was going to die. Some say he was touched by Death, blessed to help ease the pain of others moments before their demise. Others say he was touched by Life, as a way to get back at her eternal rival. Science could not explain his gift. His mother, a well-known scientist, could not tell where her son had got his abilities. His father, too scared to face him, rushed away with some of his siblings. Only one being left behind. Gauvain informed his parents that his sister would die in a few months, by noon, during a storm.

He witnessed his sister's death from illness. Perhaps he felt something back then, watching the life drain out of her eyes, but he had little comfort to offer his mother. Knowing he would not be welcome within her home or her clan for long, Gauvain left. He was able to gain acceptance with a group of traveling merchants and stayed with them for a while, keeping his mouth shut when someone was to pass away. He needed their protection and shelter, until he was full grown and strong enough to defend himself. Time passed, weeks turned into years, and Gauvain learned the trade very well. He wasn't the type of merchant those that took him in were, if anything, Gauvain became something a little more. He ran a shady business, moving shop every day. Rumors began to spread that his shop would appear when someone needed him the most. The merchants he traveled with spoke of him often. He was a good kid, they would say. Did as told. But how he turned out how he did was a riddle they never wanted to solve. All they knew was that he left them be, maybe to reward them for taking him in that day and keeping him safe.

Rumors soon became reality for many dragons. When they were desperate for someone to be killed, they stumbled upon his shop. It looked as if it had been there forever, covered in dust and cobwebs. Talking to Gauvain was easy for many of his customers. He spoke softly, gently, and always had a caring gaze. But this comfort was only a cover up for something more sinister. He would happily do any sort of “favor”. Assassination, theft, getting information, anything a client wanted he would do. What he wanted in return wasn't always treasure or even something someone expected. Many dragons appeared with eggs or their first born, expecting Gauvain to be one of those merchants. He waved their offer away and asked for something more personal. Their life. Only part of it. The chunk he wanted would be fair to what they wanted him to do. He wouldn't take more than needed. Despite being shady, he was fair in his dealings. Clients, if they were desperate enough, agreed and turned over whatever percentage of their life span Gauvain wanted. He would take it, storing it within his hourglass, and then did their job. The only thing clients got in return, to show them that Gauvain stayed true to their deal, was a single bloody piece of cloth with an hourglass painted in red on it.

Sometimes dragons would come to him and beg for an extended life. They needed to see their children live good lives, they wanted to outlive everyone, they had things left undone, or they just wanted to live a little longer. Gauvain sold them the “bought life” he had. The price wasn't cheap and he never took pity, but he could make it sound like he was giving someone a deal. When he wasn't selling bought life, he was increasing his own. Knowing when he would die, Gauvain never got too close to his final moments. Perhaps it was his faux-immortality was what drew the dragons to him, or maybe it was his business. Either way, Gauvain soon found himself cornered. He had just finished packing up shop, ready to move before someone came snooping. These dragons weren't going to let him leave without their message being delivered. A job offer. He would still travel and run his shop, but he would do most of his business through a clan. Gauvain rejected the offer and moved on with his life. A few weeks later, long after he forgot about the encounter, another messenger appeared. The offer still stood. Gauvain reconsidered, feeling slightly angered that he had been tracked. Yet he was impressed. It was hard to keep tabs on him. Eventually, he agreed. His name is still well known across the continent, but now no one sees him without good reason. If a job cannot be done by someone in the clan, the client is sent to Gauvain. They are warned about the cost, but most clients approach Gauvain anyway. No one really thinks about the consequences of parting with their life force. In a way, Gauvain finds it funny. How desperate must mortals be to rid their already short life of some minor inconvenience?
