Minor Greek mythological figure, often given as the daughter of Zeus and Persephone and occasionally suggested to be the daughter of Hades (in his role as a kind of underground or chthonic Zeus) and Persephone. Her name might come from the elements melas meaning "dark" and noe, noos meaning "mind" If originally written as Meilinoe it may be derived from the word meilia, propitiatory offerings made to the ghosts of the dead, or alternatively this may be derived from her name. As a goddess, she was a chthonic goddess who presided over the propitiations offered to the ghosts of the dead, often depicted with half of her limbs dark and half light. As a goddess she seems to have only been worshipped in the Orphic Mysteries. -- Meilinoe has recently joined the ranks of very few other hatchlings deemed worthy to stay in Kyrakios' clan. Part of a highly-successful clutch which left Peitho and Ganymede not only proud parents, but also somewhat higher-status, she was nonetheless not left entirely to her mother and father's devices. Tutored by Kyrakios virtually from birth, she has proven to have several unusual talents - time seems to run differently around her, and those who find themselves immersed in conversation with her often discover that they have spent nearly an entire day speaking with her when it seemed only to be half an hour or less. Similarly, she is able to do more in a day than seems possible, and some suspect that she may "repeat" hours to allow for more productivity. Space acts differently around her as well; she is bizarrely able to fit herself into smaller spaces than would seem possible, and she often appears and disappears from parts of the lair which should have been impassable by the routes she takes. Kyrakios keeps a close eye on all of this. While Mei seems to be completely benevolent toward the clan thus far, and accepts his guidance as the more powerful and experienced mage that he is, he is aware that she is young, and her powers quite probably have much growing to do. Possessed of the same subdued charm as her father, she also has the seductive way with words of her mother, and exhibits a smooth sort of grace which some suspect she learned from Kyrakios himself. He alone is capable of visualizing her magical machinations - he is the only one who can sense when she is manipulating the fabric of reality - so for now she cannot hide anything from him, and nor, he hopes, will she ever have reason to. -- Power seeps from between her scales and gathers at the tips of her wings. Her every step sends an echo reverberating through the magical fabric that lies just under the visible surface of the world, a vibration that only the most powerful of dragons can sense. She walks in dreams now, and when she seems to sleep it is only to wander the world of the unconscious mind. Many follow her compelling presence, and she has proven her loyalty to Kyrakios absolute. Though his powers may seem lesser to hers, she knows something -- something which means she will never betray him. I call upon Melinoe, saffron-cloaked nymph of the earth, To whom august Persephone gave birth by the mouth of the Kokytos, Upon the sacred bed of Kronian Zeus He lied to Plouton and through treachery mated with Persephone, Whose skin when she was pregnant he mangled in anger. She drives mortals to madness with her airy phantoms, As she appears in weird shapes and forms, Now plain to the eye, now shadowy, now shining in the darkness, And all this in hostile encounters in the gloom of night. But, goddess and queen of those below, I beseech you, To banish the soul's frenzy to the ends of the earth, and show a kindly and holy face to the initiates. |
