While the frozen form of Machai is prominently coiled around the Cenotaph, in the darkened corner closest to the door is crouched the emerald statue of another Guardian. Few notice him until they turn to leave and fewer still read the carved stone beneath one forepaw.

"May this stand as a warning to all that tragic accidents rarely require replication. For those that do, this is what we have safety procedures for."

Most members of Thylabis accept this story at face value: an accident claimed their Founder, and in his haste to fix things her mate succumbed too. Amongst the most senior dragons, those who have lived within the mesa longest, other theories are whispered. A Guardian stricken at the loss of their Charge begging to be frozen beside her. A protector frustrated at the risks being taken and scheming to trap her in a form that was incapable of trouble, before her supporters turned his own invention against him. An attempt to transcend dragonhood and ascend without the guidance of the Gods, that in their arrogance became an inadvertent suicide pact.

The few that know look upon Carlos with shame, and speculation abounds.
