Deep within their mesa home is a dim circular room whose roof recedes in shadow and is lit by votive offerings; candles, glass balls swirling with magic, tiny electric lights in infinitely spinning gearworks. "Memorials to the Matyrs of Science" is inscribed in elegant letters upon the steel door, and the room itself is the closest Thylabis comes to a formal shrine.

In the centre of the room stands an angular darksteel cenotaph engraved with the names of every dragon that has died as the direct result of an experiment, consensual participant or not. (The names of fallen beastclans are not. Whether this should be changed is a topic of some debate.) Curled protectively around its base is a lifesize female guardian apparently carved from glittering purple stone. Clothing and jewellery adorn the statue and the electric blue eyes seem to follow one's every move.

Between her forefeet is a silver plaque:

"Machai, founder of Thylabis, Guardian of everyone that lives within these halls. A bright and keen mind taken from us too soon. Victim of an experimental mishap that transmuted flesh to gemstone. We pledge that one day we shall reverse this curse, and dedicate ourselves to ensuring such a thing never happens again."

...it happened again.
