Biography

August
| Intelligent and Thoughtful |
2sjsDgU.png

Mate: None.

Found as an abandoned egg while the clan was scavenging, August was adopted and raised by Radsvidr, one of the clans perspicacious founders. He was taught by the Skydancer that respect and tolerance within a clan is not always earned by means of violence, but through intelligent choices and establishing beneficial relationships. Even the strongest of leaders could be overthrown and banished, but a wise dragon who keeps themselves at the very outskirts of power is likely to remain there and enjoy it's benefits for quite some time if they're clever about it. With this in mind, August used his magnetic personality and quick wit to gain loyalty and even friendship among many members of the clan, though he tried to focus much of his attention on those who he considered to have the highest ambitions, and more importantly, ones who had an actual chance at success. This quickly led him to Paragon, a handsome and clever little Coatl who August soon realized was not entirely as innocent as he outwardly portrayed himself to be. The black and white Coatl had his eye on higher ranking positions, and August felt certain that Paragon might just be determined enough to achieve it. There was a language barrier between them, though. Paragon spoke the Coatl tongue, and August spoke traditional draconic.

Upon his day of maturity, August was given a choice that he had not truly expected to receive. Approached by the clan's head mage, he had been chosen by the counsel as a candidate for transformation, as many orphaned dragons apparently were. He could choose to remain as a Guardian, but he could also choose to take on the form of another breed. August did not even hesitate to answer. As Coatls were given vastly more privilege and opportunity within the clan, he undoubtedly wished to become one. The change of one's appearance does not change their born language, however, and August still found himself unable to properly communicate with his fellow Coatls even after his metamorphosis. He eventually turned to Paragon once more, hoping that he might be capable of teaching him ways to understand his breed's language, and much to his delight, the handsome Coatl agreed to teach him in return for the same passing of knowledge. Paragon wished to learn traditional draconic.

As they began to spend more time together, August's interest in Paragon became less about gained knowledge and power, and more to do with a genuine fondness for him. He enjoyed Paragon's company more than he enjoyed the company of anyone else, and he began to feel himself grow jealous whenever the black and white Coatl's attention was captured by another. These feelings only increased as they began to understand each other more fluently. The charm and charisma that Paragon exhibited was simply enchanting to behold, and August soon realized that he had fallen in love. He felt his heart ache whenever he witnessed Paragon doting upon his faithful mate, Astrid, so much that he would often fall asleep with eyes that were wet with silent tears. Paragon was no idiot, though. Eventually, he became aware that his friend had grown to have feelings for him. Rather than discourage those feelings from building, however, August was surprised to suddenly find that his affections were now being reciprocated. The two brilliant minds became nearly inseparable as a result. While they were still regarded by the clan as nothing more than two very good friends, they would sometimes disappear from the lair for hours on end, leaving many to wonder where they had gone. A fishing trip. That was always their excuse, and August would be forced to pretend as if he felt nothing as Paragon returned to Astrid's side once more.

In spite of his jealousy, he felt genuine happiness for Paragon when his mate was with child, and he personally congratulated the happy couple once their three beautiful babes were hatched. A few days later, when two of Paragon's sons were forcefully taken by the clan's patriarch and sold, August was also there to supply a feathered shoulder to cry on. It was this unfortunate turn of events which spurred Paragon into taking action. His harmless ambition had turned into a dangerous vengeance, and when a Wildclaw by the name of Svikja eventually usurped the throne from their previous leader, August was not at all surprised to see Paragon at her side, whispering words of encouragement as she beat the ex-patriarch into the ground. The black and white Coatl's eventual ascent to power as their new leader's advisor led August to follow closely behind, becoming the clan's official scribe. Being well accepted and beloved by the lowest ranking members of the clan, but also greatly respected by it's highest, he arguably developed the most influence within the lair. It is his ability to refrain from resorting to manipulation that sets him apart from many others who hold such power, however. Instead, he uses his position to set a balance between those who rank higher within the clan's pecking order and those who rank lower. Without him to serve as a diplomat, the lair's less fortunate members would likely be subjected to far more repression than they currently are.

Admittedly, there are times now when August will go days without even seeing Paragon. He is often far too absorbed in his work and the teaching of his new apprentice to leave the chamber in which he currently resides. Likewise, his friend is even more frequently preoccupied. Whether it be advising their temperamental leader or negotiating with outside clans, Paragon's newfound power and growing family leaves little time to spare. In rare moments of shared respite from their responsibilities, however, there are times when the two will quietly steal each other away from their work, and they will disappear from the clan for a few hours once more.
