Lost, wandering out of the wilderness, craving warmth and sunlight, Saluka sniffed out a snug lair, a westward-facing sand-floored cave near the top of a dormant volcano. Something about the cave spoke of home, a soothing sensation for her troubled mind.
The cave was the entrance to interlinked to a series of interlinked, odd-shaped chambers further into the caldera. The sunset cast deep golden light across her new home. She placed her stores of food neatly onto the ledge at the back of the cave and then curled up in the foremost cave, and watched the desert night fall.
She drifted off to sleep hoping, dreaming... Of a friend. Many friends? Mayhap, a whole hoard?
What Saluka did not know is that such wishes, so heartfelt and hovering on the edge of dreaming, have a secret power in this sacred land...
Across the warming night breeze of this beautiful, arid land, came a flutter of fae wings, and a chirruping voice, which he quickly stifled when he saw the sleeping female. Curious, he could not constrain himself from investigating.
His happy chirrups woke the tired Tundra from her well-earned rest, and she turned her head to see what had awakened her. Her eyes glowed in the shadows and she saw the dark-winged Fae, his mouth and both hands full of various tidbits from her food stores. The Fae male's eyes were wide as the lumbering female rose, but she merely nosed past him, selected a morsel for herself and settled against the wall.
"I'm Saluka." Her voice was a warm softness.
He had to finish his mouthful, and apologetically put back the two small handfuls, but then bowed courteously, betraying his noble upbringing. "Artiban," he chirruped in reply.
Her sleepy lips curled into a smile. "Hello," she murmured, "and welcome."
