For newbies:
Every day, when I get on FR (flight rising), I start with the CLAN menu, and go to the Dragon Lair menu and feed my dragons. Then I go to Nesting Ground and incubate. Then I Gather Items. Under Forums, Guides, you can look up what to gather, depending on what you want.

Then I go to the SHOP menu and open the trading post. There are 5 areas to visit. I visit each one every day, sometimes I visit as often as possible to get as much stuff as possible. There are many guides for each section.

I visit each of my dragons that have a familiar. Visiting every day allows the familiar to get more comfortable with the dragon. That can lead to treasure chests with lots of goodies.

Once a month, there is a focus on a particular element, except for December. These elemental focuses are called Festivities. Visit that section under SHOP, Festive Favors. If you are artistic, you can enter contests to design skins or caption items. You can win fun prizes!

Spending time in the coli (coliseum, found under the PLAY menu) requires patience. Again, look under LIBRARY, Forums to find a guide that helps you. Explore the other options under LIBRARY. There is a lot of information everywhere. And it's great fun to explore. Take you time and don't get overwhelmed. Welcome to FR!
