Despite (mostly) Dolce's continued efforts, the cave yielded more of the same in terms of research. The veins continued to be sacridite, the clusters continued to yield rubies and emeralds, and Seina, despite searching, couldn't find anything like the strange object from the lake.

The day and a half left of the research phase passed in a somber haze, the weight of Pelindar's outburst and two dragons vanishing heavy on everyone's minds. It was much to the group's relief when the time came to set out for the dark path, even with all the potential dangers that foretold. Seref and Dolce organized their supplies while Pelindar and Seina set out to fill up their waterskins one last time and collect the group's bundle of lights from Curry and Papaya.

A swirl of sediment kicked up from the lakeside when they stepped up to the water's edge, melting into its far reaches, and Seina couldn't help but feel a shiver of foreboding, even as Pelindar's gaze never left the water.

The path itself wasn't really an issue for the group. The ground was relatively even and stable, and with a dragon like Yache back home, most everyone in their clan was desensitized to the kind of thick, inky shadows that obstructed their view. They simply linked tails and claws and made their way slowly through.

No, the issue arose when a screech pierced through the darkness they were in the thick of, when the ground shook beneath them and the rocks rumbled above them, and the tenuous link that kept them together was broken.

A scream ripped through the air - whose, it was impossible to tell - as the rocks fell down around them.

----

Seref was hysterical. He’d been in the back, holding on to his brother, and then he was… somewhere. Somewhere that was not where he was supposed to be. He was supposed to be in a cave, lit up by little orbs of light, surrounded by the murmur of the adventuring party, and his brother was supposed to be there. He was not supposed to be trapped in this pitch black with rocks every direction his tail might lash, he was not supposed to be scared, he was not supposed to be alone. He whipped his tail around, screeching until his throat gave out, but it was rock rock rock on all side, rock rock rock rock scales?

He felt the scratch open up under the blade of his tail, the sensation so different that it stopped him in his tracks.

“...Peli?” he whispered, unable to speak any louder. “Peli, Peli, Peli, is that you Peli?”

But he couldn’t see, and he couldn’t hear anything. So he sat and waited, tail coiled around him like a blanket.

----

The screaming was terrible. Muffled by the rocks, but terrible.

Seina scrambled to her feet, barely startling at the sensation of something falling off of her. She had to get there, dear Arcanist, what happened? Were they hurt? Was someone else hurt, that they were screaming for? She made to rush forward, only to trip on something hard and cold but still warm. She ended up back on her stomach, but this time with the distinct sound of breathing in her ear.

“...You’re not Axi,” the breath muttered, softly, quietly.

Seina whipped her head towards the source of the voice.

“Saxon!?”

“You’re surprised…?”

She stood up again.

“We thought something had happened to you! You just disappeared, after all those legends… I’m glad you’re alright, but there’s more important things right now- where’s everyone else? I can’t see any of the light orbs, did we lose them-”

“Please, for the love of all the constellations, shut up!”

Seina found herself blindly swinging her head back and forth.

“Axi?”

“Yes!” The voice was coming from some ways off, far enough away that the orbs’ light wouldn’t shine through if she had one. “And your rambling is not helping!”

“You heard me, didn’t you!? I can’t find anyone in this dark!”

“Regrettably! And what about your dumb heat vision eyes!?”

Right. Calm down. Deep breaths. Focus on what you can do. She wasn’t entirely sure if her eyes were open or shut, but she made an effort to open them anyways. It was strange - even her sense of heat seemed blurred. She could make out a shape just beside her - Saxon, she hoped - but nothing else.

“It’s only working up close,” she reported.

“Of course, the one good thing you did get from Mom, and it isn’t working right.”

“Both of you stop it!” another voice called out from the dark.

“Peli?”

“Yes, and I’ve got an orb, so just… keep talking!”

“Well, like I was saying, I got all Mom’s skills-”

“Except for flying-

“About anything else!”

In the abrupt silence that followed, she realized that the screaming had stopped. She hadn’t even noticed. She turned to ask Saxon where he’d been, only to realize she couldn’t see him anymore.

“Saxon? Where’d you go?”

“You found Saxon?” Pelindar called.

“I mean, I did, but he’s gone again now!” Where could he have disappeared off to - and why would he just walk off into the dark like that!?”

“Saxon!” Aximilo screeched, “What are you doing!?”

----

He could hear voices, faintly. They seemed to be calling back and forth, but he couldn’t really hear them. Not what they were saying or who they were.

The sound of a groan next to him brought him out of his listening trance, bringing with it the immediate knowledge that whoever was with him was not his brother.

He wanted to scream again. He tried. But it hurt. It hurt so bad. He couldn’t force a single sound out. So instead he curled up again, listening to the sounds of the dragon next to him stirring.

“Hello?” he finally heard, and he recognized that voice, at least.

“Dolce?” he whispered. Even that hurt his throat, now.

“Who?”

“Seref…”

“Ah. ...Are you hurt?”

“Throat hurts.” He felt tears running down his face. “I want Peli…”

“He’ll be here.”

How could she say it with such certainty?

His tail lashed again.

----

After a lot of trial and error, Pelindar managed to find Seina and Aximilo, and they huddled within the orb’s light, exhaustion and fear making even the friendly yellow light feel tense and cold.

“I’m sure this is all your fault,” Seina grumbled.

“What, you think I want to be here like this?” Aximilo spat right back.

“You distracted me! I lost Saxon!”

“I’ve been working with him! You think I- I want him gone!? How dare you!”

“Wait, you two were working together?” Pelindar asked, despite his previous declaration that he was “staying out of this”.

“I happened upon him in one of the caves by himself. He didn’t really like working with you, turns out. You always just bowl over him.”

Silence met her declaration.

----

He couldn’t stop shivering. At some point, Dolce had made her way over to him, and he could feel her claws on his torso, and it had helped a little bit, but not enough. Just like her soft, certain words. How could she know? How could she know Peli would find them - that anyone would?

Something scratched at the other side of the rocks. Had the thing that had set off the rockslide - that screeching thing - had it found them?

It stopped, then scratched again, a little ways down. Then again. And again.

“Hello?” Dolce called out. The scratching stopped.

“I found them,” came a voice, calm and strong.

More indistinct shouting. More scratching. More distinct shouting. The ends of words, of sentences, voices that he- he knew-

He pushed, scrabbled for purchase against the rock in front of him, but it wouldn’t budge, but he needed to get to his brother, he could hear him, he just needed to get to him-!

“You’re just going to tire yourself,” Dolce told him, but what did that mean to him? He pulled back, slammed into the rock, heard rocks grinding and sliding, yes yes yes this was what he wanted, he just had to do it again and again and-

And suddenly light burst into his eyes, and he stumbled, stunned, and fell. He vaguely sensed something rushing past him, murmuring voices, and then-

----

There were no serious injuries among them, just Dolce’s scratch, Seref unconscious, and scrapes down Saxon’s shoulder and torso from holding up the rocks Seref had caused the collapse of. They just had to wait until someone found them and brought them to the others, and so now they were sitting on the other side of the dark, bandaged and waiting for Seref to wake.

“I am absolutely not taking my brother into that tunnel!” Pelindar shouted at an explorer who’d come to collect the group's vote. “Whatever that thing is… No! I’m not doing it!”

“Stop shouting,” Aximilos grumbled. “You’re gonna give him a headache in his sleep,” she said, motioning towards Seref.

Pelindar stood down for a moment and took a deep breath, the tension never really leaving his face.

“If we don’t dig a tunnel around, then you’re going to have to escort my brother and I out before you go through there,” he growled, slicing an arm in the direction of the now blocked-off tunnel.

Nobody was inclined to argue.

Andrijan,

Sorry if my writing is sloppy; the lanterns are dimming and I don't have much time. It'll have to be short. It was so cold, entering the darkness. Hoping we'll be free of it soon, it's suffocating.

I'm scared, Jannie. There's something up ahead. Something dangerous. Probably made this darkness. But I can't turn away.

Call me reckless, thoughtless, stupid. Call me whatever you want. But this option is the only one I can be sure there will be a worthwhile reward at the end. We expected danger. We have warriors with just for this. Even as my claws shake, I won't turn my back.

Lecture me all you want when I get home.

-I love you,
Khonor

At the ominous rumbling sound, he let out a little bark of alarm, and immediately tucked into a small ball, head and neck sheltered by his wings and paws. As the air cleared, he leapt back up, shaking off the dust and prowling around to help check on the dragons around him. @Skritnaja Dont think I've voted today yet, sending some treasure now.

I vote for:

B. Dig a new tunnel that wouldn't lead to the planned artifacts but would still possibly lead to a different cavern before heading to the surface.

__35247349p.png __ Dear father,

The vote decided that we'd go in the dark tunnels! What a relief. We're about to head in now, I just though I should let you know. Not much else to report on, so I'll let you know more later.

Love, Yzorik

Yzorik traveled close to the back of the group, not wanting to get in the way of the Light magic users. He wasn't in any rush to see stuff first, just as long as he didn't miss out completely. Engaging in casual chat with the dragons around him felt nice, like he was at home.

:: DAY SIX :: The vote was overwhelmingly in favour of forging forward, to shift the rocks in their path to figure out just what had caused it. And just what it was guarding. Never one to push anyone into something they didn't feel comfortable doing Curry took a deep breath and looked back behind the group. He commented that he too felt the pull forward. Yet he mentioned that it would do the group no good to have anyone along that didn't want to take the great risk that their journey came with. So he gave anyone the option who wanted: turn back the way they came, no hard feelings. It would be easy enough to find the way back out to the enterance and meet up with the dragons who were already camped outside the very first narrow passageway they had come in. Once anyone had left that had wanted to the group was down to a very determined, small amount of dragons. Several of the group were rather brave, immediately ready to start work on moving the boulders out of the way. With the stronger dragons working at the forefront of the endeavour it took nearly no time at all to clear the rocks once they got to a size that all could particpate in clearing the way. As they broke through and regained the path they were met with an incredible chill that over took the group for a few seconds before subsiding. It didn't seem possible but the pathway felt even darker and heavier than before. Not wanting to lose anyone Curry tried hard to keep the group as close together as possible, yet just far enough apart so as to not hinder any dragon from defending themselves. There was a small shudder at that thought, but it couldnt be denied. They all very well may have to defend themselves soon enough. At least as they kept forward they were able to gather some amazing samples from the tunnels collapse. It must have shook loose a lot more than just the small part that caved them in as all along the pathway they noticed signs of break aways. The change was so gradual and slow that at first no one noticed the path they were walking was getting wider. Not until suddenly it opened up to a great pit that Papaya had to react fast to avoid falling down. The pebbles that fell from her feet scratching to a halt made no noise at all. Everyone was stopped just in time thankfully to avoid anyone or anything else falling down into the pit. With their backs to the drop Curry and Papaya adressed the group with the intent of scaling down into the depths. There was no mistaking it, this was where the readings had come from. This newly found chasm was reading very high for ancient magics. So much so that they were rather sure they had never found any place so old before. But now that they were so close, a more disturbing reading was popping up. Chattering between themselves first they had wanted to make sure the readings were absolutely correct. Then again it wasn't a far jump in logic... They went on to show some incredibly readings of long lingering magic that was certainly protecting this cavern. It's nature was so far gone from this world that it was causing the unnatural darkness, magic so dark that only true light could pierce it. They very well could have happened upon an ancient lair that saw it's demise come upon them extremely fast, preserving itself with magic being the only option they had to not fall completely. It would explain the heavy feeling they all encountered in the darkness. With one more reminder that they were possibly not alone they started the descent. Surprisingly it went off without a hitch. As the last dragons claws hit the ground everyone turned around at a soft gasp. Papaya had been the first to turn, the gasp had escaped her as she looked upon the almost perfectly frozen in time lair. Obviously outdated it was still easy to tell what was what. Stalls for market, an open common space, crumbling banners over pathways that probably led to dens and homes. The heady, thick darkness could be seen lingering over them now, making one wonder how during the descent they did not notice its absence. While the darkness was somewhat lifted the weight was not. Certianly something strange was going on here. Yet it was too exciting to hold in. The fiery skydancer jumped around in absolute joy. They had /done it/ they had /found the dream dig/ and there was /so much preserved/. Once composure was regained the pair doled out jobs to the groupd, dragons working in pairs or more. No one was allowed to be alone with how dangerous this area could be. With so much to recover and document it was going to be quite a work load to undertake. There was simply too much to do with the group they had so they focused on the most important sections of the main way they were in. It was several hours of report taking, sample picking and uncovering ancient ways of life before some stomachs started to growl. After all they had been through it was not possible to put off eating any longer. Happy with the large amount they had recovered Curry called out for everyone to come eat. Getting the group gathered back together in the main common space supplies were unpacked to make everyone some grub. Admist the hustle of food making something caught Papaya's eye and she wandered off just a little bit from makeshift cook space. There was just something odd about the pure white shine in the darkness. It was almost too late by the time she heard the gentle clattering of bone hitting bone. With only seconds to react the skydancer screamed out releasing a large burst of Light magic at the increasingly large protector in front of her to give her the moment she needed to turn tail and run back towards the others. It wasted no time following her as she burst into the edges of their little break space, turning around to fire another, much larger ball of light at the protector. Using that moment she barked out the words that would send shivers down even the bravest of dragons spines. They were facing a Skeletal Wyrm, full of fury at being disturbed! It would take the cunning, skill and power of every dragon in the group to fell the beast. So old was its power that it did not go down easily, even once rising up again when the group had thought it was done for. Making sure this second time that it was legitimately slain everyone was able to stop for a moment and breathe. Upon taking deep breathes one would find that the quality of the air was increasing. It was clearing up, and the curtain of darkness above them was lifting as well. So much so that those with better eyesight could probably make out the cavern's ceiling above them. There was so many questions racing around his head that Curry had to take a moment to himself before addressing the group. Obviously they had two options in regards to the wyrm. They could try to break it down, or even bring the whole wyrm back with them if they were crafty enough. It would be possible now with the heaviness gone and the darkness lifted. But there would be no telling if they would end up cursed for disturbing it further... Or they could simply do as they were here to do and ignore its presence. Just focus on the work in front of them with all this ancient lair had else wise to offer them. Which was very much in the ways of artifacts and well preserved trinkets. Either way they would not stay longer than a few more hours and only had the time for one or the other. :: DAY SIX ::

The vote was overwhelmingly in favour of forging forward, to shift the rocks in their path to figure out just what had caused it.
