In the interminable haze, even the shadows seem listless. You amble ponderously forward until a deeper darkness blooms from the void. The dim form of a coatl emerges as you approach the edge of the Trench. Faint illumination trickles from a diver’s lantern, slung across one shoulder. Tied to her waist is a trident, gleaming with menace. She turns as you approach, her eyes glowing in the eerie light. “You’re here,” she says, matter-of-fact. “Good.” This, then, must be Echo, your guide. “Echo, right? I’m part of the Levitos expedition,” you tell her, but she shakes her head and cuts you off before you can continue. “No need. She glances down, as if she’s forgotten that she’s carrying a trident that’s almost as long as she is, then chuckles. “Nothing to worry about.” She smiles, catlike, full of teeth and barely restrained hunger. Introduction

Mafia (or Werewolf, as it's often known) is an intense psychological game of paranoia, deception, and intrigue. In a game of mafia, a small group of mafia seek to kill the town, and the town seek to lynch (collectively kill) the mafia before they die. The mafia know who each other are, and the town don't. This is the central concept of mafia: an informed minority against an uninformed majority.

During each turn, people can talk and decide who they think are mafia. Everyone votes, and the person with the most votes is lynched (killed by the game as a whole) at the end of the turn, or day. Also during the day, players with special abilities (typically referred to as power roles) choose whether or not they want to use their ability. The mafia also have an ability by default - the ability to kill (thus removing) a player from the game. Immediately after the lynch, all the special abilities used during the day take effects. Then the turn ends and a new turn begins.

The mafia win when they overpower the town; the town wins when it lynches all the mafia. The town's job is to identify people as possible town or mafia, and they do that by talking and questioning them. The mafia want to appear as towny as possible and avoid being lynched. Of course, both sides want to use power roles in order to further their aims. To add to the confusion, some players may not be aligned with either the town or mafia! These players must satisfy their own unique win conditions in order to win.

Expectations

  • This is a non-RP game. You are expected to engage with it without roleplaying a dragon. If you also want to RP on top of that, I’m not stopping you, but it’s not particularly encouraged.
  • This is a fast game. Days will last at least 21 hours, with a lockdown period of no more than 3 hours to allow me to process actions. There is no night phase, which means actions must be submitted during the day. There is no enforced limit on length, but I don't expect it to go very far past the end of the festival.
  • This is a reading-heavy game. Its predecessor ran about 80 pages over the course of a real life day; in total, it was almost 400 pages in one week. This game is quite a bit smaller, but I would not find 50-60 pages in a day to be overly surprising.
  • This is a role-heavy game. Expect to have an ability of power (how much power will vary). The setup has not been reviewed very tightly, so there might be unforeseen game-breaking interactions or swinginess.
  • This is potentially a b/astard game by at least one definition. I may lie to you as a result of a role or mechanic; however, I will not omit role information or involve myself in the game in unscripted ways. This game will always be respectful of your time.
  • This is a demanding game. For the most part, it’s not one you can just play for half an hour and put down for the day. You will want to be online for extended periods of time or multiple times throughout the day.
  • This is an emotionally intense game. Mafia requires contentious, if good natured, argument. Conflict is inevitable, but that doesn’t mean anyone in this game dislikes you personally. However, within reason, I will do my best to make this game an enjoyable experience for every player.
  • This is ultimately a fun game, and I hope you’ll enjoy it!

Remember that some roles may be capable of overriding certain mechanics. However, if you think I’ve made an error, bring it to my attention privately.

Abyssal Madness

  • The mafia have the factional ability to warp a player’s mind, making them Abyss-Touched. Other abilities may also make players Abyss-Touched.
  • Players are not directly informed of whether or not they are Abyss-Touched.
  • Some abilities change in nature when their user is Abyss-Touched. Such changes are marked in parentheses labeled (Abyss-Touched: some effect).
  • A player who is Abyss-Touched dies of insanity if they would become Abyss-Touched again.

Events

  • As the game progresses, it changes. Each day may bring new dangers or new opportunities in the form of Events.
  • Each Event spans one day, though it may also include effects that last for longer than the duration of the day itself.
  • Events may consist of multiple parts and a variety of effects. All Events provide opportunities for all players to advance their win condition. Some events may have effects that are not publicly reported.
  • The list of Events is not public information. However, the Day One Event is as listed below:

Lynching

  • Each day, you may vote for another player in the lynch thread. So long as I can tell who you’re referring to, your vote is good. Please strike out your previous vote when you make a new vote, but use a new post for each vote.

    • (#-SHOT) abilities have a limited number of activations. If they are used but do not complete, they will be refunded to you. You’ll always know exactly how many shots you have.

Setup Information

  • The two publicly known factions and their wincons are:
    • Surface-Dwellers: You win and end the game when at least one member of your faction is alive and all Deep-Singers are dead.
    • Deep-Singers: You win and end the game when the living members of your faction equal or outnumber the living Surface-Dwellers, or when all Surface-Dwellers are dead.
  • Roles do not have any hidden elements or incorrect information.
  • Anyone may request assistance in phrasing fakeclaims.
  • Players are not informed if their action fails, unless they would otherwise receive a result.
  • Abilities which functionally add players to chats also return results.
  • Players are not informed if they are acted upon, except in the case of conversions, neighborizations, and ability gain or loss.
  • You are free to ask hypotheticals about action resolution, but I am also free to decline to respond.
  • All action resolution mechanics can be overridden by specific roles!
