A secluded staircase at the back of the lair leads deep into the earth. A single, tiny room sits at its base. Packed on every available wall are bookcases, themselves coated in a myriad of preserved specimens, books, scrolls, and other assorted items. A layer of dust covers the majority of the equipment.

While at first glance, the items seem to be sorted, the longer the look, the more you pick up on a sort of chaos of the items- things laying on their sides, books strewn about the floor, broken instruments left out on surfaces.... It seems that whoever was working here either hit a metaphorical brick wall, or went insane. Quite possibly both.

Tacked to the workbench with a small scalpel is a tattered piece of parchment. It is sloppy- revisions have been made aplenty, and it is not overly organized. Lines have been struck through and rewritten as if unsure what is actually working. Some parts have just been smudged out so badly that it is illegible. It reads:

"Potential Cure?

Needs:
-Base: brewing in alchemy lab
-Need to find ingredient to lessen risk of falling comatose.

A row of cages attracts your attention. As you pad towards the wall they are stacked in front of, you are bombarded with a scent that makes bile rise in your throat. It seems this den was once home to many animals- though whether for experiments or as a menagerie you acan't deduce. They are long gone now, anywho. Down a long hallway are a series of rooms. The first room on the left is filled with cushions and drapes- quite clearly a bedroom of some sort. Scattered about the sleeping nest you notice small scraps of parchment- sketches. You pick up the one closest to you- a pretty pink-speckled pearlcatcher. Eerily, it has a large red 'X' over the top of the drawing. You reach for another- and it is the same. Again. Another room off the hallway- this one sealed a little better than the others. Inside is much cooler and drier than the rest of the lair. Lighting another torch, you shed enough light to see... boxes! Lots of small containers of various materials with labels below them on the shelves. Bags of snacks, containers of home-preserved food, boxes of dried goods... you found the pantry! Reading through a few of the items on the shelves, you snicker at the descriptions.

"Dreamwaker Legs- Helps narcolepsy, black-outs, comas, and some say, death."
"Dried Toxindivers- For those special party drinks. Keep out of reach of hatchlings."
"Banded Dart Frog Jerky- Taste the Rainbow. See the Rainbow."
"Buzzwing Vampire Jam- Use in small amounts. Not for immunocompromised dragons."

A large archway off of the main hall draws your attention. Walking through, you are amazed by what you see- books! Endless shelves as far as the eye can see! Walking up to one, you pull a random text from the shelves.

The thin leather hide that binds this tome smells slightly of whatever creature it was cured from. Wrinkling your snout at the smell, you flick it open. It is a book on curses and their removal- interesting!

"One common curse to afflict many lairs around Sornieth is a simple enchantment known as a Sap Spell. This relatively well-known curse, while not overly dangerous, is quite a nuisance to dragons and beastkin alike. It pulls energy from the very creatures around it, congealing it into a thick, syrupy substance of pure magic. Labcoats. Vials and instruments. Work tables. Stethoscopes. You have walked right into a small doctor's facility! The room, compared to others, seems decently organized and untouched by whatever madness had taken over the previous occupents of this den. In fact, a small line of containers and tools on one of the workstations catches your attention simply because they are still in any sort of logical array.

Tucked under the edge of a metal phial that is filled with something deep green that smells like mold, you spy a piece of parchment. You gently tease it free, and inspect the mostly legible and well-organized notes.

"Hallucid Fever

Symptoms: lethargy, heavy sleeping, irritability, rash of the feet, and high fever in beginning stages. Followed by increasing stages of narcolepsy/black outs, rising blood toxicity, and hallucinations. Extended untreated symptoms develop greater periods of madness, manic energy, and incoherence followed by severe unconsciousness bordering on comatose due to body's inability to combat rising toxin levels in the body. Prolonged symptoms greatly decrease survivability rate. Current rate: 2%"

With a faint smile, you flick a gold coin at the structure- it pings off of the backboard and into the water with a sloop! You pause. That sound.... is the area behind the wall fountain hollow? Coming closer, you see a few alcoves built around the guardian-shaped carving that acts as the font itself. Seven alcoves, to be precise. The first two have a smooth red and orange stone sitting on them, respectively. The third shelf is empty. The fourth contains a rough green stone, while the fifth shelf is once again empty. Sitting on the last two are deep colored stones that reflect the night- one the blue-black of midnight, and the other a lighter shade of purple tones. You tap the wall behind these alcoves with your claws- the same empty sound. There is certainly a passage of some sort behind the wall fountain. But how do you get back there? Is there a way to open it?

The sound of running water draws you to a location deeper into the den. Out of the way of main hall- in a small side hall near a garden, is a fountain. A training room- practice dummies torn to shreds and missing limbs, stuffing spread around the floor in small piles. That is the grisly sight that meets you next. Perhaps it wouldn't have been so bad if there were deep, dark stains across some of the dummies, or a layer of mold on others. Gingerly stepping in ( and keeping an eye on those dummies just to be sure they didn't move), you scour the room. After quite some time, the only potentially useful thing you come across is a key carved from a fang. Just what it could be for, you do not know, but the idea fills you with a sense of dread.

Looking down, you notice a faint trail of footprints in the dust. You are not sure how long it has been since feet last disturbed this place. You cautiously follow the path as it weaves across the den, hopeful it will lead to something useful.

You instead are met with skull, painted and resting in a corner. It's toothy grin seems to mock you from where it sits on the floor.

Furniture, fabric... everything is torn assunder, strewn about and in absolute display of manic energy. While it is difficult to see what would be important about this room, not to mention traverse it, you do manage to fish a small iron key from underneath an up-ended dresser.
