A secluded staircase at the back of the lair leads deep into the earth. A single, tiny room sits at its base. Packed on every available wall are bookcases, themselves coated in a myriad of preserved specimens, books, scrolls, and other assorted items. A layer of dust covers the majority of the equipment.
While at first glance, the items seem to be sorted, the longer the look, the more you pick up on a sort of chaos of the items- things laying on their sides, books strewn about the floor, broken instruments left out on surfaces.... It seems that whoever was working here either hit a metaphorical brick wall, or went insane. Quite possibly both.
Tacked to the workbench with a small scalpel is a tattered piece of parchment. It is sloppy- revisions have been made aplenty, and it is not overly organized. Lines have been struck through and rewritten as if unsure what is actually working. Some parts have just been smudged out so badly that it is illegible. It reads:

Cannot kill with poisons.... Killing patient with poison is not viable cure despite destroying diseased cells....
