From lost love comes peace
A sense of self-fulfillment

They run forth,
unhindered by the skeletal steel structures lingering in the earth
undaunted by the shattered remains of asphalt roads
unbound by the twisted remnants of barbed wire and chain-link fences
finding solace in skeletons.

The animals,
emboldened by the disappearance of the hunters
encouraged by the shadowed ruins of cities
enticed by the remains of the humans' victuals
they conquer what once was ours.

They thrive,
just as we struggled amongst ourselves in petty squabbles
just as we killed anything we got our hands on
just as we never would
because we would never think of our species as something ephemeral.

Liberty,
finds them sleeping quietly amongst their children
finds them filling the cities with birdsong
finds them covering the earth in life
finds us in death.

Let windy bells ring the start
Let the shadows play their tricky games
Let the fires dance in the breeze
as the jubilant tunes and songs are sung!

Let thundering drums crackle with glee
Let's watch light spreading across the land
Let earthen friends join in the celebrations
please, won't you join our song?

Let the arcane scholars all help our cause
Let icy hearts open to us
Let every water dragon's strokes be quick
for our song is almost over.

Is our celebration over yet?
No, our lovely nature guests are needed
And the plague bringers too, of course
Let's all begin to sing together!

Let the Jamboree begin!
Let us all go quell our misplaced hate
Let us celebrate what we have left
The age of peace can only last so long.

Let us blaze with emotion as we dash away
Let us ring with excitement even as the party fades
Let us love and be loved.

Let us help those who need help.

Wake up, wake up, wake up
There are hunters in the shadows
Baring their keen serrated claws
Smiling smiles full of vicious gleaming teeth
Wearing blades sharp enough that
even the sound of them being drawn from their sheathes can cut
They are here for you, and they
are closing in
on their weary prey
Wake up wake up wake up
The wind shrieks a warning in your ears

Fly
Like you have never flown before
Like you are trying to die of it
Like you have nothing to lose
Heart-pounding bone-breaking muscle-tearing
Fly like an arrow fired from a bow
Cast yourself heedlessly through the night air
The wind will rise and speed you on your way

Keep going be strong don’t give up
Another mile farther and
you will be able to breathe,
Over the river and they will lose you,
into the forest and you will have shelter,
another wingbeat another heartbeat another moment spent alive
You are running on stolen time and you must steal more
Keep going they are still hunting you down,
Keep going,
Keep going,
Push on,
Don’t look back,
The wind will lift you up when your wings can no longer do so

Finally,
Slow. Slow. Slow.
Shush.
It’s all right
Look behind you
No one’s there
Collapse.
Lay your head on the earth and laugh at the stars and wonder
If this will every truly be over
Shush.
Deep breaths.
Close your eyes.
The wind will sing you a lullaby.

You sleep lightly
Uneasily
Nightmares real and imagined
Snapping at your heels

Meanwhile, I
Shriek over vast meadows
Whistle through ancient ruins
Tilt tall trees
Stir live flowers and and dead leaves
Whip the sea into foam
and clouds into storms
Fly, whirl, dance
Shout, drift, tear
Guide, free, ascend
Sing
And I aid
Every lonely traveller
Every lost soul
Every musician, painter, sculptor, dancer, artist
Every runaway, every escapee
And every one of my children

Sleep, sleep, sleep
And never fear
I whisper, I warn,
and I am here.

What’s that beauty that passed me by?
But a flower that caught my eye
Growing there amongst the brush
Just its presence makes me blush.

Is it aware of my being?
So close and what I’m seeing?

All my senses need consume
All its softness and perfume.
What I would give to be the air
To touch something that’s so fair.

Could I have it just for me
And not for all the world to see?

How could I remove this creature
Without disturbing a single feature?
Do I dare touch its petal
Or will my touch sting like metal?

My eyes search its delicate frame
But my thoughts, I must tame.
Removing it would be a crime
Censure, for all time.

I do believe in this instance
That I must gaze from a distance.
For as insane it may seem
Sometimes it’s better just to dream.

Entry: THIS IS MY LOVE SONG TO YOU

i. soft voices and softer words, these are the things that can never be unheard, whispered hesitantly in the darkness, trembling fingers and words tripping over her tongue, a shiver in her shaking voice, the look in her eyes is something i will never forget.

ii. summer dissolves into fall like mist in the morning sun, she breathes words into my skin like an affirmation of truth and traces liquid happiness into the spaces between my ribs.

iii. i would apologize for all the lost time but she makes me feel like the clock isn't ticking at all.

I remember you
And the way that we danced
With our wings nearly touching the sun

Side by side we would fly
Chasing rainbows and our dreams
How I wish those days had never ended

But you're gone now
We both knew the day would come
When you had to serve a higher calling
And leave this world behind you

And as I gaze up at the sky tonight
I know you're watching over me
Your golden eyes still misty
From the day we said goodbye

And I'll sometimes see you dancing
Like you did with me before
In the early morning dawn
Where we used to fly together

I know you'll be forever waiting
Until the day we reunite

For not even divine exaltation
