After that, Caia needed to decide on a name for the second-youngest. She stared at the young female Mirror for a while, but the only words that came into her mind were "paint factory explosion". She was pretty sure that no dragon would want to be called that, so she tried to think of another one. Finally, she decided of Scoril. Caia watched the four eggs excitedly. It was one of the largest nests she had had so far, and she was waiting impatiently for the eggs to hatch.

The first was already almost cracked entirely open, and as Caia watched, a small Mirror male crawled out.

His scales were dark gray, while his wings and underbelly were each different shades of orange. Caia gently pulled him out of the nest and set the new hatchling next to herself.

It was evening, and Leafcrackle, who was on the day shift of the Clan's guards, was returning from his job as the night shift rotated in. He looked exhausted, and Caia wasn't surprised. It couldn't be the most relaxing job, guarding the Clan all day. Just as Leafcrackle was about to make his way down the tunnel that would lead to his room, Caia launched herself from the ledge she had been perching on and flew over to Leafcrackle, landing slightly behind him and starting to walk next to him. Leafcrackle turned his head, glancing at her with a tired look on his face. He didn't say anything, though, only waiting for her to speak. "Hi," Caia said. "Can I ask you a favor?" He finally spoke. "What do you want?" he asked. Caia hesitated, because there wasn't really any good way to say this. Finally, she sighed. "I want hatchlings. And," she continued, "I want you to be the father." Leafcrackle stopped, and she nearly ran into one of his fins. "You want what?" he asked.

Both eggs looked like they were almost about to hatch, though the smaller of the two eggs left was a few cracks further along. As Caia watched, another crack shuddered across the surface of the egg, and the fiery egg shuddered before cracking apart. The final egg broke open only a few seconds later. They were striped and peach colored. Like her older sister, she was also covered in crackling patterns; however, hers were green. Caia held all three of them close for a few seconds, but she wanted to decide on names. Perhaps a matching set, with all of their names starting with the same letter... Caia had picked beforehand, right after her last nest with Leafcrackle has hatched. He next mate would be Tigerleaf, Leafcrackle's brother. The purple Pearlcatcher had no mate, and he was part of the shrinking population of mateless males who had not already had a nest with Caia. Meanwhile, Tigerleaf padded across the hall, much like his brother had, not so long ago. Caia wanted to try a more subtle approach this time. Last time had felt very awkward, something Caia wasn't accustomed to. She spread her wings, flapping from the same perch she had been watching from that last time. Weaving around the masses of fluttering Faes and gliding Guardians, she flew down to the ground and landed, past the crowds of dragons and closer to her target. Caia tucked her wings in and slipped over to Tigerleaf so she was walking nearby. To Tigerleaf, it would seem like she was just passing by. "Oh, hi there!" she called out while there was still a good distance between them. She saw the Pearlcatcher look over. He stopped walking, and Caia took the opportunity to saunter over. "Hi," the purple dragon said slowly, sounding confused. Caia just gave a toothy grin in return.

The eggs weren't due to hatch for one more day, but Caia had decided to stay in the hatchery with them, since they were so close to hatching. She rearranged her limbs, shuffling around on a soft bed of furs and curling up so her nose nearly touched her tail. She felt prickly and strange, and the volcano the lair was built into rumbled slightly underneath her feet. Sighing, Caia lifted her head. She usually didn't have problems sleeping, but it looked like she wouldn't be getting any rest. As she shifted slightly, she spotted something. Movement? Confused, Caia studied the nest carefully, looking for the movement she had spotted just a few seconds ago. Had a BeastClan member snuck into the hatchery? Were they going to steal her eggs? Caia climbed to her feet, no longer content to lounge around next to her nest. She desperately wished she had more battle training than the small amount of battle practice her mother had required her to learn. She looked around again, and the sniffed the air. Nothing, except for the familiar rotten-egg sulfur scent that came from living on a volcano. Besides, how would a BeastClan member get so far into the lair without being spotted? Even though it was nighttime, there would still be a good amount of Clan members out and about. Then, she saw the movement a second time. But this time, it clearly came from the eggs. One was rocking back and forth. Wait, no, both were. The eggs were about to hatch! Caia abruptly realized that it must be past midnight and time for the eggs to hatch. @SariStar this is a really interesting idea! Can I be put on the pinglist please? Also, if you find yourself needing males I generally have some that I'd be willing to give away. They're just fodder anyways. ^^

Approach the potential mate. Chat a bit to see if they would be a good option. Then, with a bit of careful maneuvering, change the topic to mates and hatchlings. Nightleaf finally stopped flying, landing in a small tunnel leading to what Caia assumed was his post. Caia had it down to a system.

Approach the potential mate. Chat a bit to see if they would be a good option. Then, with a bit of careful maneuvering, change the topic to mates and hatchlings. And then, and only then, would Caia make the offer.

It worked about 90% of the time. That wasn't bad, if you asked Caia. But it looked like Nightleaf was one of the 10% who the system didn't work on.

"Hey!" she called, padding after the Pearlcatcher. "Wait! I need to speak to you!"

The lavender dragon paused, turning his head towards her. He didn't speak; instead, he raised an eyebrow.

"It's very urgent," Caia continued. Which was true. She needed to speak with him, and quickly, before he had to start his shift.

At that, he walked back.

Caia smiled.
