Its species name, [i]aureus[/i], comes from the Latin word for golden, referring to the golden dorsal stripe on its long, slender body. It is found in the Sierra Juárez mountain range in Oaxaca in cloud and woodland forests. It is nocturnal and lives in leaf litter, rocks, and fallen trees, where it feeds on invertebrates like grubs and insects. It is endangered due to habitat degradation from loggin, as it prefers virgin (undisturbed) forests.

Found in forests, including peat swamps and tropical lowlands, this semiaquatic animal has webbed feet and long whiskers. It is nocturnal and feeds on fish, crabs, and mollusks, though it can also climb to feed on birds and fruit. Its population has plummeted over 50% over the past three generations due to habitat destruction (peat swamp forests are being converted to palm oil plantations), pollutants, and snares set for other species.
