Today’s species: the shore plover!

The shore plover (Thinornis novaeseelandiae) is an endangered species of plover endemic to New Zealand. It is also called by its M?ori name, tuturuatu. It exhibits sexual dimorphism, with males bearing a black mask while the females’ are brown. Unlike most shorebirds, this species nests in burrows under boulders to protect it from avian predators such as skuas. Though its range once spanned the island, due to invasive species like cats and rats, now only 200 individuals remain.

Today’s species: the sei whale!

The sei whale (Balaenoptera borealis) is an endangered species of baleen whale. Its name actually derived from the Norwegian word for saithe, a fish that regularly appears on the coast at the same time as the whale. It inhabits a variety of oceans, migrating through subpolar, temperate, and subtropical areas in its 70-year lifespan, traveling alone or in pods. Reaching speeds of 50 kilometers per hour (31 miles per hour), it is one of the fastest cetaceans. Over 255,000 whales were killing during the 19th and 20th century surge in commercial whaling, slaughtered especially for their meat, a popular food item, and whale oil. It has also experienced mass death events of over 300 whales, perhaps due to algae blooms. Though it is now protected, it is still hunted by a Japanese program purportedly devoted to research.

Today’s species: the boreal felt lichen!

The boreal felt lichen (Erioderma pedicellatum) is a critically endangered species of lichen found in Alaska, the Russian Far East, and along the Atlantic coast. Its common name derives from its fuzzy appearance and the fact that it is found in boreal forests. It grows on the trunks of trees such as balsam fir and black spruce. Like all lichens, it is a symbiosis, a long-term relationship between two organisms- a fungus and a cyanobacteria. It is threatened by habitat loss, air pollution, and introduced herbivores like the moose.
