[*][b]Average Weight:[/b] 45 to 68 kg [*][b]Average Length:[/b] 62.5 to 114 cm [/LIST] [/left] [/quote][/center] The hawksbill sea turtle can be found in most tropical waters, but they wont be easy to spot. This is because they are critically endangered. A major threat to these animals are us humans. These sea turtles shells are harvested for their beauty and they often get caught in fishing nets. You might be asking yourself, why are they so important anyways? Well a main park of a hawksbill's diet are sponges and keep coral reefs clean. Without them sponge growth would triple and grow out of control. They also provide the residents of the Coral Triangle with a steady income as many tourists come to admire the turtles. Do not fear though, there are ways you can help! You can help Hawksbills by reducing the amount of garbage (plastic bags especially, as the turtles may mistake them for jellyfish and consume them, leading to many internal issues) you produce and cleaning up others’ garbage that you find on the beach. In addition, be aware of nesting areas and avoid the nests and any hatchlings. Though they are indeed very cute, it’s illegal to touch or move hatching turtles! There's also many myths surrounding touching animals, especially baby ones, but picking up that baby bird isn't going to hurt it. So here's what you should do if you come across and injured or orphaned wild animal: [color=yellowgreen][b][size=5]S[/size]igns that the animal is truly injured or orphaned[/b][/color] [size=2][color=peru]First make sure the animal is really injured or orphaned before approaching it, most of the time these animals don't need our help.[/color][/size] [LIST] [*]Presented by a cat or dog [*]Evidence of bleeding [*]An apparent or obvious broken limb [*]Featherless or nearly featherless and on the ground [*]Shivering [*]A dead parent nearby [*]Crying and wandering all day long [/LIST] If you see any of these signs, find help for the animal and if necessary, safely capture and transport it. [color=yellowgreen][b][size=5]F[/size]inding help for the animal[/b][/color] After making sure the animal is in need of our help, call a local rehabilitator. If youre unable to contact one try contacting a local animal shelter, humane society, nature center, or veterinarian. Never handle adult animals without contacting a wildlife professional. Heres how you can make transportation more comfortable while waiting for help to arrive. [LIST] [*]Put the animal in a safe container. For most songbirds, a brown paper bag is fine for transport. For larger birds or other animals, use a cardboard box or similar container. First, punch holes for air (not while the animal is in the box!) from the inside out and line the box with an old T-shirt or other soft cloth. Then put the animal in the box. [*]Put on thick gloves and cover the animal with a towel or pillowcase as you scoop him up gently and place him in the container. [*]Do not give the animal food or water. It could be the wrong food and cause him to choke, trigger serious digestive problems or cause aspiration pneumonia. Many injured animals are in shock, and force-feeding can kill them. [*]Place the container in a warm, dark, quiet place—away from pets, children and all noise (including the TV and the radio)—until you can transport the animal. Keep the container away from direct sunlight, air conditioning or heat. [*]Transport the animal as soon as possible. Leave the radio off and keep talking to a minimum. Because wild animals aren’t accustomed to our voices, they can become very stressed by our noises. If they’re injured or orphaned, they’re already in a compromised condition. Keep their world dark and quiet to lower their stress level and help keep them alive.
