The Lore
Black Opals actually started from a corrupted metallic fire. The story goes that an unhappy dragon, who wanted his normal life back, sought out a mage in hopes of reversing the curse. He gave the mage a handful of rainbow-like stones, opals, and begged him to help. The mage brewed him a lotion and told him to apply thrice a day for 1 week and watch for the results. "You will be pleased with them" he assured.
The dragon did as he was told, but instead of turning back to normal, it got worse and the results permanently and irreversibly altered his entire family as he wanted to turn them back into "normal" dragons too. Their natural elemental flight magic got corrupted as well and gave the dragon a second source of power within the opals that were now deeply embedded in their hides.
The opals, which the mage actually threw into the supposed reversal potion, absorbed all the natural magic within the dragon and trapped it inside its iridescent surface. The tint of said opal would dictate the new power given to the dragon, though they would still be able to use their original elemental powers as well. However, with this exchange came a permanent color change to the deepest of black; Obsidian.
Dragons of this subspecies find it harder to tap into their power as a hatchling and the original dragons of the subspecies actually needed to relearn their power altogether. Once learned though, they were stronger than average.

Green signifies a nature based opal. these dragons can artficially grow plants and revive them among other nature based things.

Purple opals have shadow based powers. These dragons tend to prefer the dark arts.
Teal Opals: UNCOMMON
Teal are a mix of nature and water, these dragons have powers that can manipulate the deep seas and currents.
Yellow Opals: UNCOMMON
Yellow Opals deal in illumination magic mostly and bioluminescence.
Orange Opals: UNCOMMON
Orange Opals... yep you guess it. Fire babs.
Pink Opals: RARE
These dragons love crystal magic and specialize in it.
Red Opals: RARE
The magic of these dragons is usually devastating... they use their magic to control blood and disease.
White Opals: VERY RARE
White opals are healers and remedy makers typically. some can control ice at their leisure.
Black Opals: VERY RARE
Black opals specialize in necromancy and spirit warding.

Black Opals can come in any breed on flight rising.

Metallic/Alloy combo is required. The third gene MUST be opal.
